Nintendo Switch 2 |OT| Switch 2 Nintendo, because now we're playing with power

I was curious about using Game Chat video in handheld mode so I tested it and it works just fine. Playing Mario Kart with friends and family with cams is awesome. Love seeing the despair on their faces when you hit 'em with the blue shell.

Somebody like Hori should make cheapy little worm light style webcam with mic and light like this, but in usb-c...

Wonder if GameChat influenced their decision to go with the bigger 8" screen.

It definitely helps along with having top and bottom usb-c ports.

I'm surprised there isn't handheld cam solution yet. Even that little Kano worm-light cam would be great if it just had usb-c instead of usb.

With the 'Expand Main Screen' setting, the game screen window is roughly 16cm/6 1/4in. Basically the same size as the original Switch's screen.

Why the hell are you even in this thread then? You responded to a video showcasing the game with how you love PC gaming and are emulating it in a fucking Switch 2 thread.

You're fucking GPU alone is nearly 4x the cost of the entire Switch 2 so of fucking course it looks better then a $450 console that is essentially a tablet. You people never stfu about PC do you?

Papito, calm down, I can hear your blood pressure rising from here

The mouse functionality with the joycon is super underrated. Not many games are using it yet, but like gyro controls, I suspect plenty of games will.

I'm really surprised at how well it works, even just using it on my lap or couch. I'm tempted to buy Civ 7 just for the novelty of using the mouse controls.

I hope we see some weird stuff in the future, too. We've basically never had dual-mouse games before, so we could see some new genres or gameplay gimmicks come from this. (Hopefully something better than that stupid wheelchair basketball game though.)

My local Walmart had three non bundle Switch 2 units on hand so grabbed one while I was there.

Mario Kart World is pretty fantastic, visuals look great and having 24 players really adds to the gameplay.

I haven't played the Cyberpunk 2077 port yet. I already beat it on PS5/PS5 Pro so not in a rush and mainly bought the game for handheld use.

I also downloaded that glorified tech demo game that was like $10.

Now I'm just waiting on a 2nd pair of Switch 2 Joycons and the Switch 2 Joycon Charging Grip I ordered online which should be arriving tomorrow.

I spent most of the weekend playing non-Switch 2 games on my Switch 2, mostly Super Mario Odyssey, which is still an absolute joy to play in 2025, packed with inventiveness and charm. Plus it now looks much better than it ever did on Switch (even when docked). The image is crisper which helps with the texture detail and the game still does a fantastic job of hiding LOD pop in. The only weakness is still some noticeable jaggies from time to time and some really low resolution shadow maps (that seem to swap between low and high just by panning the camera). The fact that this game is being apparently emulated and isn't running natively on Switch 2 is testament to how good the coding is because I saw no framerate drops at all - it stayed locked at 60 fps - or graphical glitches. I played this for well over 20 hours across the weekend.

I did also finally get around to playing Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 as well, which I bought the physical version of (£59.95 from Amazon). Normally, I wouldn't buy third-party games for Switch 2 but I was so curious about this. The game is surprisingly good. In fact, I was stunned at how well it replicates the experience I first played on PS5 then later on PC. The graphics are obviously softer but the use of DLSS means that the game looks perfectly acceptable on a 4K TV in my opinion. The framerate is also fine - seemed to keep to 30 fps throughout the first 2 hours I played - though I only played the Quality mode (there is also a 40 fps Performance mode). The only graphical "nasty" is some bizarrely looking reflections on metal surfaces which look so bad that I kind of wish they'd just blurred them out to give them a super diffused look that is less distracting. Otherwise, this seems to be the same experience as the other platforms which is incredible considering this can be played on a 10W handheld and from Nintendo of all people.

For some reason though, I cannot get HDR to work in this game as the option is greyed out and cannot be selected. I have my Switch 2's HDR setting set to use it for compatible games only so can only surmise that this is a bug as the game has an HDR option so it isn't like the game doesn't support it.

Never tested it in handheld mode though; in fact, I haven't played any games in handheld mode since I got my Switch 2 apart for showing my sister how the docked/handheld experience worked with Super Mario Odyssey. That game looked fine on the LCD screen but the LCD screen itself is just so underwhelming in comparison to playing games on my 4K OLED TV with HDR that I suspect I will just leave my Switch 2 docked and never use it as a portable. I have a Pro 2 controller and that is excellent, far more comfortable to use than the Switch 2 joycons plus it has the remappable GL and GR paddle buttons underneath that I have mapped to left and right analogue stick 'click'.

I have experienced a couple of issues with my Switch 2 losing signal to my TV but that is likely due to me using a 4K HDMI splitter that is connected to my Samsung soundbar via my TV's HDMI 2 eARC port. I do like how quickly the Switch 2 can change resolutions on the fly though - something you don't see in other games - e.g. Welcome Tour has a 120 fps mini-game that switches the game from 4K 60 fps to 1440p 120 fps in just one second (with a brief black screen) then back again after the mini-game has been completed. Other games, of course, let you manually change the refresh rate from 60 to 120 Hz but I have never seen a console game that actually switches the resolution like this. The Switch 2 doesn't support HDMI 2, unfortunately, so in order to access 120 fps on the TV, the resolution has to be dropped to 1440p, just in case you were wondering (my LG C3 TV actually supports 4K 120 fps).

Another issue I've noticed is with the colour space which is set to Auto on Switch 2 and Auto on my TV. However, if I set both to Limited or both to Full (they are supposed to match) then the image brightens up suggesting that the Switch 2 (or my TV) is not matching the RGB colour space correctly. This is an issue that I also saw on PS4/PS4 Pro as well but it was fixed for PS5/PS5 Pro. Not sure if this is a console or TV issue.

The mouse functionality with the joycon is super underrated.
I just love how it's integrated on a system level and all you have to do is just flip it. I've been using it to fill in forms (eg. credit card info etc.) super quickly. Seems to work solidly on most surfaces.

Not sure how well it'll work for long playing sessions though, looking forward to trying that out with Metroid Prime 4. I can only assume they'll implement it in Splatoon 4 as well.

OLED has a lower battery impact ;).

OLED wins on battery life in dark content. Battery drain can vary a lot based on what's shown on screen.

LCD is more efficient than OLED in bright scenes. Battery drain with LCD us consistent regardless of the content.

So a high-nits OLED HDR display would reduce Switch 2 battery life even further with bright games like Zelda.

Man, apparently, finding a silicone case which is also detachable AND dockable is almost impossible...

Ordered one the other day from Amazon and - surprise, surprise - now that people actually got a S2 in their hands say that the cover is not dockable, FML...

Been also searching on AliE and Temu to no avail, any suggestions guys ?

Already put a screen protector but, I can't have the rest of the console "naked"/unprotected since this a portable system after all...

What is also pretty good is how the Switch runs older Switch titles. The ones that have no Switch 2 versions I mean. As the Switch 2 uses emulation for all original Switch games the new hardware runs them at consistent frame rates by default.

What do you use it for? I really want to test it but I'm not ready to buy Civ 7. What other games use it?

My only concern with the console , since the announcement is the storage. 256 is not enough, and consider how expensive the Express SD cards are, and the somewhat low storage , I am really concern about that. Mainly with the Game Key card thing, which, I really hope it is only a release window thing. Else , only first party games will be in the cart.
I can understand why they used express cards as the speeds are awesome. But Unfortunately nothing really uses them so the prices are high. I was trying to buy a 512gb but could only seem to get a 256gb one.

Battery life :

It averages at almost 2 and a half hours with CB2077...

...what I really find unacceptable though, is the fact that the ROG ally only manages about 1 hour and somethin' minutes, how are these systems considered to be "portable" ?
The SD appears to be better but, battery life is the biggest problem with portables.

The Rog Ally has a notoriously bad battery. Big reason I opted for Ally X. 80wh makes a difference.

I got the Switch 1 version of this and it's great 👍

If you want to (very) soft mod your joycon into a dpad you can use these/this cap. Again, I used this on my Switch 1 and it worked great

I'm finding that the early offering is reallly shitty. The cheap amazon version I'm using right now will dock if I press down, but then will somehow undock later until I press down again.

Went ahead and ordered the dbrand killswitch. Comes with a dock extension to solve that problem. Makes me think there is just not enough room in the dock itself to work with most grips.

Ordered these thumbstick grips and they fight very snugly on both the joycons and the Pro 2 controller.

i'm torn between this or the savage raven (skull&co) neogrip 2

"DROP THE PRICE!", "I WON'T BUY IT."

Fastest selling console in 24 hours in history.

Yeah...
Initial sales doesn't represent long term. The die hards are buying the initial stock, Nintendo has to convince the masses it's worth it. I don't have any problem with the console price but I do with the games pricing.

It's not emulation (which is a good thing, because that would be much less performant), but yeah, most games with performance issues on the original Switch seem to get smoothed out and generally hit their frame rate caps.

I think it's more of a case of the Switch 2 not being able to run games at those rates... even if it wanted to lol. ;)

From what people say on the topic, it kinda is (not pure software emulation but also not hardware reproduction as previous Nintendo consoles, but rather something in between - like PS5 playing PS4 titles)

"If we tried to use technology like software emulators...we'd have to run Switch 2 at full capacity, but that would mean the battery wouldn't last so long, so we did something that's somewhere in between a software emulator and hardware compatibility."

Not sure what you're saying here.

It's a translation layer basically, mapping old instructions to new ones. It's kinda like emulation, but not really, they're not emulating a full Switch on the Switch 2.

Just looked up the price of microsd express cards. Thats gonna be a no for me dawg.
I had 26 games installed (a lot of small stuff like Ib and Witch's House but also big stuff like BOTW) and I still had 99gb available.

I decided to not really ever bother with it as realistically I won't have that much installed and I still had a ton of space.
