Flashless at the Golden Globes
Yeah, no one should be playing games sub 1080p on 4k sets, and lets face it, all these games including avatar, and ac shadows drop to 864p all the way down to 720p at times. But numbers dont lie, and cerny said 75% of console gamers play those shitty 720-864p 60 fps modes. So thats what epic is trying to show off.I'd be disappointed if TW4 doesn't look better. It's doing a lot of nice stuff, but in 800p Vaseline Mode this is the bare minimum I expected coming into this gen.
That ballpark of visuals in 1440p30 was what I was gunning for. So if they can do it at 60fps while getting that resolution sitting comfortably at the upper end of the bounds (1080p), then doing the same at 30fps should get you into the 1440p region.
As far as I' concerned, sub-1080p is kind of unacceptable at this point unless you're on Series S. It just looks like crap on a reasonably sized 4K TV no matter the content or core visual quality; and in the case of the base PS5, you'll only be getting temporal (or temporal+spatial) upsampling, and even going sub 1440p looks like crap with that.
The tech demo looks great in gifs and is ok on more forgiving smaller displays, but once it's up on the big screen it's straining to look at. Plus the DoF is also kinda awful and a lot of the assets in the market take on a kinda "stodgy" look.
Almost every single UE5, anvil and snowdrop game hits 1440p with rare drops to 1296p (4k dlss balanced) in their 30 fps modes. Exactly what Epic promised at the start of this gen back when we werent all 60 fps warriros. Some actually hovered around 1512p. On my 3080, ive played most of these games at 4k dlss quality-balanced. Both look pretty much native 4k or better than native 4k with TAA. And thats what i will likely play Witcher 4 at. But then again, the game wont be out until 2027 and i shouldve upgraded by then. And worst case scenario, if Nvidia pulls out of the gpu business, we should have ps6 by 2027 and it will run this game easily at 4k pssr quality at 60 fps.
I also think path tracing will allow these UE5 visuals to shine even brighter. The lighting will be better, and those nanite materials will show off even better with path traced lighting. Wukong's path tracing mode takes an absolutely gorgeous game and takes it to another level. the dragons dogma 2 path tracing update took some very mediocre assets and just completely transformed them. i wouldnt be surprised if the final game looks better, at least on ps6 and pc.
