One thing that's been incredibly frustrating about modern gaming is the lack of light gun games.

I recall having the Virtua Cop games on my Saturn on a 28" CRT screen and I was always excited about the prospect of playing these games on huge 65" screens

As TV sizes increased with LCD and OLED we lost the ability to use traditional style light guns, and while we got the likes of House of the Dead on Wii and Time Crisis 4 on PS3 with Move support it wasn't accurate enough, it just didn't feel the same.

But, it appears we may be about to see a huge resurgence of the genre thanks to AI and camera tech…

The AI Gun is engineered to self-calibrate by intelligently detecting your screen, offering unparalleled accuracy and ease of use. It works from various angles and distances, supports all kinds of common screen sizes, [and] can be tilted to shoot--it is designed with the casual gamer in mind.

Resident Evil survivor.
Thanks OP. You reminded me that I needed to use some cex vouchers and order a Dreamcast lightgun and a con 45 to play survivor

What was up with the light gun cabinets with the super stiff cables? Did Lethal Enforcers really ship like that or did I just play on a sad repair job where they used the same cable technology from my bicycle lock to make it a sad stiff unplayable mess? I forget which others also had that problem.

Anyway after playing some of the lightgun-esque stuff in VR I just kind of assumed people would have ported all the light gun games to that. That shit works great. Even better than a Wiimote!

I was just talking to a friend about this yesterday
Yo, this was definitely one of the cabinets with the horrible stiff cables... please someone tell me I'm not crazy.

Also my favorite was:

That SMG controller was the shit!

Virtua Cop and Time Crisis were both really good too. Though I vaguely remember the Time Crisis cabinets having still cables at least on some of the releases... but the game was good enough to overcome them.

Sell me a plastic Uzi with Op Wolf/Thunderbolt, Taito

Also if G'AIM'E can be updated I'd love to see Deadstorm Pirates

The Area 51 cabs were quite pathetic. I also played Site 4 back in the day. Small guns with no recoil I think. It was a bit low budget compared to Namco.

POINT BLANK (PSX) was a great game.

It was a bit disappointing that the official Guncon only worked with Time Crisis, and Point Blank was the next game. But once I bought it I found it incredible. The minigames are very original and fun.

PSX was actually a great lightgun system. You could buy a third party gun with recoil and pedal, that worked with every single game. I owned Maximum Force, Area 51, Time crisis 1 and PT, Point blank 1 and 2 and more.

Every popular light gun game should have been remade for VR.

Too late now

Big problem

Every VR game I've played where I'm not using my head and my own body to move around makes me sick.

If I can't handle games where I'm using a stick to move around, imagine how I'd cope with VR rail shooters.

I think light gun games can make a comeback purely because they'll be awesome on modern 65" TVs

It doesn't seem to have recoil. Half the excitement is the recoil but it looks promising for sure. It looks much easier to setup than using infra red sensors.

Retroshooter has a SMG style controller in addition to their excellent reapers which are the top lightguns in terms of price vs performance.
