Microsoft has announced job cuts at Xbox Division

One of the biggest and most profitable companies in the world trying to eliminate people from the equation. What could go wrong?

It has worked very well with dotnet

Magic 8 ballNo one will believe this, but I agree with GHG GHG 😬. If it has Steam it means it's just able to load up Windows or a heavily restricted Windows Lite that may restrict some elements of full Windows but run all Steam games.

I also believe HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 who is adamant about it. So I'll just wait and see what it is.

I think it'll just be a 1st party surface team version of Xbox PC and a 3rd party version will be the OEM ones. I'm open to seeing it. Series X is slim and quiet and has quick resume. It also might have some AI shit in the 1st party one.
Will it run GTA 6 day one?

"Microsoft's Xbox cuts have hit key areas. News of Microsoft's major layoffs today keep rolling in, as the company informs around 9,000 employees of the cuts. I've heard from sources that the Xbox user research team has been hit hard, with nearly half the team affected. It's a key team that focuses on ensuring quality across Xbox games, the platform, and developer tools. Even the head of Xbox family and child safety has also been laid off."

--------

And I thought it sounded like very drastic behaviour for a thriving gaming platform. Could be that the team had gotten bloated with a lot of redundancy. Or maybe they're merging the team with the larger MS/Windows team as they continue to pivot towards a focus on PC.

Or did they realise that since they've cancelled so many games that they didnt need them any time soon. 😋

Xbox Third Party Portfolio - Sr. Content Planning Manager -

If this guy was responsible for gamepass stuff then this sucks. Picking up Clair Obscur, Palworld, Manor Lords, Blue Prince - someone had an eye for hit/good games that is missing wherever first party stuff gets greenlit.

Time to load up on ms stock. Next years Financials will look so much better because of the layoffs and the big jump in profits due to the lowered expenses and being 3rd party. Non gaming people will look at that and think ms is doing amazing.

They are definitely moving toward PC and will be (gradually) shifting their core audience to PC as well.

They are already "evangelizing" for Asus Rog Ally, a PC handheld, which has been on the market for over 2 years now.

The contingency plan for projects that are making it out the other end of this is to supplement the loss of manpower & experience by training management of all levels on proper applications of CoPilot/ChatGPT. Videos on how to prompt LLMs for assets and new potential workflows are being produced as we speak.

In layman's terms: the expectation is the surviving projects will come out on time tables, now at lower budget levels, and at quality levels that were established before the cuts.

Also - this is not the last round of layoffs for XGS by a long shot.

Oh shit, the purple forum are canceling Game Pass and selling their Series consoles in solidarity against the A.I. overlords taking all our jerbs. RIP Xbollocks.

This is like when Xbox One launched all over again. Where is Sony to tell us how they would never replace people with evil A.I.? It could be their let me show you how to share games video all over again. Save us, Sorny.

People brushing over the fortnite, roblox, and GTA marketshare are coping. A lot of games are struggling to make money, even when they are good games.

There's been a thread pinned at the top of the forum for 3 months now calling for the boycott of Microsoft and Xbox due to "genocide"

Say what you want about the stupidity on that forum, they're heavily influential, lose hardcore gamers and the rest will follow

I'd really like to know who asked that, because I think the answer would be no one asked. He just had to say something to make himself seen.
I would have asked, because besides Grounded, Psychonauts, Indiana Jones and FH it's the only MS ip i'm really interested in.

They think they're so influential and then Stellar Blade stuck it up their asses on Steam. They got so hot about that.

remember when they bought ABK. some people, even at here celebrating, proudly suggest Microsoft would 'fix' those company. im chuckle reading that. they cant even fix themself and yet they want to bring in more. who speak other wise would be called jealous or haters. even phil spencer and some journalist proudly boast how it was a carrier defining moment for him.

"influential" 😆 The era, no pun intended, of online forums like that or this being able to have a semblance of influence is long gone.

Replacing blue/purple haired people who want to work at home with A.I. sounds like a good fix to me. You just aren't ready for it yet. MS is always pushing us into the future. First with an online only console(it's coming), and now with A.I. making all of our games. Pioneers, I swear. :P

Yes, because if there's one lesson MS should learn from this (and previous) generation, is that marketing doesn't matter at all. At least here in the EU. The results speak for themselves.
Well, the point I was making is that she in no capacity 'made' the game. Now if it's a good game and the marketing failed... it's not entirely illogical to shitcan a marketer. I'm not sure a cat lady is going to know how to best market a video game to people who buy video games. But I'll assume your point has more to do with a lack of marketing in EU rather than the quality. Nevertheless, I shall give the cat lady in marketing no quarter, for I know she would do the same to me.

For real. This past few generations, I've seen some ads for ABK titles in Youtube (most pre-aquisition), but other than that, zero. Nada. Zilch. This is a stark contrast to Sony/Nintendo.

Now, do I like ads? Fuck no, I detest them. But as the saying goes, you got to spend money to make money. Something MS apparently hasn't been interested in for the past decade or so, at least here.

Microsoft is such a stereotypical American company. Throwing money in an industry it doesn't understand. Looking to buy out everybody. Always targeting 'billions of consumers' while they can barely maintain their 50 million or so.

Then doing talks in PR words, treating their audience as if they're children 'when we all play, we all win' (Tbf a lot of American adults are childish and fall for this). Always trying to undercut competition (Subscription services, Series S) using their excessive money. And, ofcourse, treating their employees like numbers while trying to somehow spin everything positive as usual.

Raise your hand if you're not the least bit surprised about this. This is the most easy-to-predict thing happening right now. Most ppl here could tell subscription day one was going to lead to cannibalization and low sales and third party pivot which would reduce xbox sales. Most here can tell their next xbox is basically a pc and they're trying to end thir hardware business. You don't need research for all this when it's this obvious.

When it comes to passion hobbies, American public companies have two options: either find a formula that works for normies while vocal minority criticizes you (Disney Marvel movies, Call of duty, Fifa) or create something with passion. I feel for these employees but this is the system they voted for, the system they fought for half of the 20th century and this is their American culture. Nintendo bosses famously took a paycut in dire times, you think Microsoft (or Apple, Facebook, any public limited American company) would ever do that, LOL. It's all tit for tat and when the tat falls, they come for your tits.

Did they keep Aaron Greenberg after all this?? He's in marketing right? How in the hell does this man still have a job after all of this?

It's gotta still be happening. Putting all of their games on PS is the easiest way for them to make money.
Literally 500k people bought Doom The Dark Ages, I don't think more than 20 people played the Gears beta. Aside from Forza and Sea of Thieves no one wants Xbox games.
