Ghost of Yōtei gameplay deep dive 10th July (2pm PT // 5pm ET // 10pm UK)

I mean you've got to be pretty dense to actually take my facetious comment to heart, but the textures are a joke, I expected a large improvement over the first game, not this half step

The wet leaves on the rocks are definitely an improvement along with the tall grass in the back but the fucking STOP sign looking as bamboo shoots are like nails on chalkboard but for my eyes.

Pretty much exactly what I expected. Very, very similar to part 1.

Looks fun for a bit to see the sights and try out the combat and new weapons. I doubt I would make it to the end. I couldn't finish the 1st one and this looks like more of the same but bigger.

I still have some interest though. Will likely pick up if it comes to PC after a 50% discount or more.

With is a shock, one is a PS4 game and the other is a PS5 game.

For some folks here who love to shit on PS4, but say PS5 is a piece of hardware, there is nothing there to be proud.

loving everything that's shown. definitely a day one for me and high chance of double dipping when it's release on Steam.

just a point I would like to make regarding some posts I saw here. for those who's criticizing no cities, please remember Hokkaido was basically the Alaska of Japan in the 1600s. even right now there is only 1 medium size city around Mt. Yotei, let alone way back then. so it's most likely by design that there isn't any major cities.

And god DAMN does that kintsugi PS5 look fine! I am too broke for this dammit!

I do believe you will be able to buy the faceplate and controller by themselves if I read it correctly, so there's that.

I agree it's mostly underwhelming but as usual I'm blaming that on cross-gen. Even if this is PS5 exclusive it's still using the same engine kit as the first game with maybe minor tweaks. It's kind of ridiculous.

The overcorrection I'd like to see is "less is more" like Shadow of Colossus. No one is likely to go that extreme, but I'd like to see more open world games lean in that direction.
I love the semi open world style of the last two Deus Ex games. It was the perfect size and density.

I also love the smaller districts of some Yakuza games set in a few really small areas. I felt HEAVY burnout when the series moved to Hawaii. It was exciting at first but when everything turned into a collectathon and busywork the appeal wore off.

Something like Judgment was perfect. I felt so much more connected with the setting.

No need to watch, it's a day 1 and guaranteed GOTY contender as I've said for months now. I'd encourage people to try media blackouts on games they are interested in, I do it all the time and promise you it will enrich your experience tenfold, can't wait ⛩️

I was wowed by the herd of horses riding across the field in one scene, and an incredible looking storm in the distance in another. I guess we all look for different things.
I agree they look really nice, but those are brief striking moments, well-lit, camera panned back and everything lined up just so.

But the trailer is full of parts where it all just falls apart and lacks consistency, mainly whenever the camera goes from distant shots to in mid or near-field shots. Again, I'm not saying it looks terrible overall, but it merely looks good in the realm of last gen games, not the top current gen stuff; and I kinda expect top stuff from Sony's first party stuff (or at least I did). The art style is doing a lot of heavy lifting here but with a new generation of consoles I just expect a significant bump up in the technical underpinnings and I really don't see that evident.

What doesn't help is Sony's first party were at the absolute pinnacle of boundary-pushing and crazy levels of optimisation from 2007-2020, consistently blowing us away with what they could do (incl. Sucker Punch's own particle work in Infamous: SS) and this gen they've just completely given up. We're just getting res and fps bumps; and if we're lucky some RT features plugged in. Assets are barely being improved and next gen featuresets are largely being ignored. It's just this complete contrast.

I only hope this is a case of covid having mucked things up more than folks are letting on and the cross-gen tail is even longer, with these likely being delayed PS4/PS5 cross-gen games but instead they just canned the PS4 version to simplify development given a later release than planned.

It look's like a lazy and uninspiring dlc with horrible main character. Pass.
Seriously, main character looks like a amateur mode on nexusmods site man, wtf.

Why is she horrible exactly? Just because she's a "strong independent woman", or do you have any more specific grievances?

I don't disagree there. I haven't played a single Insomniac Spider-Man and never will.

I'll eat my hate if that happens. Maybe we can do an avatar bet later for funsies.
Nah its okay lol. Im not saying I think its a 90 just to be clear. Im saying my prediction is the press will think that. But anyway, doesn't really matter.

Absolutely nothing shown here looks like a game made for current gen. This is as PS4 as it gets. How the fuck is Rift Apart, years old game, looks significantly better than this? It's as if Yotei was already made for the PS4 years ago, they shelved it as a panic button release for when it's needed, and then they just ported it to the PS5, calling it a current gen exclusive.

The very only thing that looked nice are the vistas, but that's mostly because of the aesthetic, not impressive visuals.

And that's crazy because GoT looks 90% identical, and that was made for dogshit Jag cpu's. Nobody at Sony bothers updating their engines, they release sequels to PS4 games that look the same as they did years ago.

6/10 presentation of the game.

Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? Ghost of Tsushima was released in 2020. But sure, this full-blown sequel was already done years ago, for the PS4.

You're missing out, those games have some of the best open world gameplay ever (traversal in particular, but the combat is great too).

By how they talked it seems they are focusing more on the Ubisoft style of huge worlds, more places to go, camps to kill, collectables blabla

It's like both Sony and Ubisoft know many users can only purchase very few games yearly and they are trying to make these 100+ hours experiences

Artistically i liked what i saw here more than in AC Shadows, the clouds effect on the mountains was great, same for the music. Graphically it has the same problem as other Sony titles, the lightning looks flat, and RTGI does a lot of heavy lifting on AC:S

Im kinda done with this kind of games with uninspired sidequests/exploration but for a teen who gets this and AC Shadows, he has 300h of content easily

Watched the State of Play and I still can't get behind a female protagonist in this setting. Ditching Jin from the first game is surely a mistake given how well received he was?

I honestly don't know what people are expecting of a GoT sequel. This looks really good IMO.

Complaining about live service games I get, but here is a AAA single-player game and that's not good enough either?

You would have hard time convincing me that's not a switch game.

Textures, geometry.. everything screams switch level visuals.

The good news is if you act fast, you can get new glasses during the Prime Day sales.

Sure, some rough stuff there, but Switch game?

We are less than 100 days away from the launch of Ghost of Yōtei on PS5 on October 2! This week, we can't wait to give you your best look yet at what to expect with a State of Play gameplay deep dive streaming on July 10.

Our State of Play features nearly 20 minutes of Ghost of Yōtei gameplay hosted by Sucker Punch's Creative Directors, Jason Connell and Nate Fox. Beyond sharing more about Atsu's quest for vengeance, we're excited to show off her new weapons, new ways to personalize your journey at the edge of Japan, new special modes, and much more.

The Ghost of Yōtei State of Play gameplay deep dive will stream on PlayStation's Twitch and YouTube channels on July 10 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm BST / 11pm CEST.

I'm glad to realize that this bunch really makes up the minority of opinions these days. The game looks great and feel confident that it will do well.

The negativity and/or casting down is really uncalled for at this time. The first game did super well and there's no reason to believe that anything less than will occur again.

Too many here only play one game, shit on games ESPECIALLY if its on the wrong platform

I am convinced several here do not even play actual video games

My issue with Ghost of Tsushima mostly comes from playing the game after Sekiro which GoT felt so underwhelming by comparison.

People say this is "good Assassin Creed like game" which is not positive point, I don't like AC AT ALL…..for me there is no good Assassin Creed game…I don't buy AC games because I'm trying to avoid this type of gameplay loop.

At least I have a fun Samurai game I can looking forward in next year.

Sometimes I'm not sure what gamers expect. If the game is mechanically good and is fun to play then..

I watched most of the sop. Game looks fun.

We complain against insane dev time and bloated budgets yet complain when every game don't look like cyberpunk on a 5090.

Yeah no it doesn't look good. this is a PS5 exclusive game and not a PS4 port for it to look like a PS4 game with more horses in the scene.
the characters details is a PS4 level. I honestly think even the main character in the first game looked better than this.

its going to be a solid game. no one is denying that. But it doesn't look good.

"Sometimes I'm not sure what gamers expect."

It's on the newer hardware,

The hype machines for the things are "x times the processing power " etc etc so there is expectations. What those are depends on the individual I guess.

I think we hit the point where technology is no longer the limiting factor. It's time and budget. Unless you want the game to have a budget of $300M+ or take 8 years to develop, there's not much more they could have done to make it look a lot better.

Does anybody in Sony's western development branch still sounds like a man ? Because holy shit ... every presentation is one soyboy after the other..

Saw the beginning... basically GOT with a shittier protagonist... maybe when is deep discounted

Sorry, but I wholeheartedly disagree. For your statement to be true, it means SP intentionally made GoY look worse than its predecessor (on better hardware btw), down to the pixels of the character. Unless SP is trying to sabotage its own game, that doesn't even make sense.

Seemed kind of mid. I still don't like the switch to this much later timeline and away from Jin. I also don't see anything interesting about the new FMC.

I am ok with the graphics but they really look phoned in. There are some decent QoL changes and a few more things but it's again, pretty mild.

I am not certain what's going on at Sony Western studios, but once again, a mid sequel and it's unclear why it took so long to produce.

I was one of those people who thought Tsushima was a 7 but it still had amazing art style/graphics/vistas and a solid melee combat system. But the story itself and most of the characters including Jin felt very flat and just boring. I actually had the most blast with the game in Legends mode. That was great.

But yeah this just seems to be more of the same and it really didn't do much for me. The biggest saving grace would be if they actually manage to make the exploration feel good and not just chasing birds and foxes which got boring after a while.

I hope they take a look at how fast and sometimes just unpredictable the enemy attacks were in GoT compared to games like Sekiro. Sekiro had perfect balance of making sword swings unrealistically slow so that player could actually react to the attack when they see it coming. I hate it when in games like GoT you are expected to memorize the timing to push a button when the blue/red cross appears on the enemy because most of the times there just isn't enough time to react to the swing.

Mostly tepid criticism or enthusiasm and we have to listen to the same "geez if you can't lose your mind over this you probably don't even play gamesss."

I think it looks like something I'll play on sale. Said the same thing about AC Japan. This just looks like any rough edge that could possibly make it interesting has been smoothed away. It is why it will get 90 and why I will find it boring after 20 hours before the end.

6/10 presentation of the game.

6/10 sounds very high based on what you said. The comments sounded more like a 2/10.

We are 5 years into this gen now though. And gamers here anyway majority what 30+? Not thick and know the score. Diminishing returns gets talked about all the time.
One thing a game looking clunky or cheap like the new mafia that's on a lower budget.

Ultimately art style can be more important.
