Ghost of Yōtei gameplay deep dive 10th July (2pm PT // 5pm ET // 10pm UK)

The game looks amazing, day 1 for me, i love the Japanese setting impossible to skip for me…. But the Toxicity and Negativity of the Playstation community is on another level, is like they are having trouble to enjoy things, from the YouTube comments, Instagram, twitter and here…
Toxicity is such a soyboy word to avoid any criticism...

Or we can do like the MS fanbase and applaud like good seals to everything they shit out... it worked wonders for them.

I think people have been waiting to pounce on this game since it's announcement - I think it looks fantastic, however some folks are determined to make ridiculous claims.

I think it's totally valid to air criticism - I do think some of the criticism is over the top in this case - it is obviously better looking that GoT and it's running at 60fps - to me that's a generational leap. Also the team took 4-5 years to make something that has multiple bigger scope gameplay systems than the original. We've seen little of the narrative (for obvious reasons) - I think that the team has been pretty efficient with the time - compared to other studios which have produced nothing in 5 years.

The eventual gran turismo 8 is going to be fun times. Gt car models are already better looking than real life and I don't they can improve upon them.
PS6 and raytracing will still be a struggle, even when it comes 2030. Proper reflections, caustic effects, especially RT stuff in rain, maybe snow if GT tries a bit Rally again. It would also be time to get actual deformation after a crash too. That "boink" might be fine for videogamey playing, but for anything semisim or sim, actual consequences, visible and making a car barely drivable up to DNF, should be there.

PS5 was basically framerate and resolution, and we kinda are still not fully there, so while native makes never sense if you can get to something similar more efficiently, dialing that up and corresponding detail on eg a leather steering wheel detail, is still possible.

Imo a bottleneck is already save space and will be even more in coming gens. Huge SSDs cost a lot.

GoY looks very fine, just like every PS5 game that isn't rendered in 580p and upscaled to death. Every decent game should be at least good enough imho.

Then my post wasn't directed at comments like yours, actual constructive criticism

I am in the camp I thought the game was beautiful even if there were reused assets and the game wont suffer imo from rocks not having great geometry

Not sure why people are shocked it looks so much like GoT, I don't know what they were hoping for as its pretty much exactly what I expected

Its a wait for PC to purchase type of game for me but I look forward to playing it

Personally, i believe that some compromises are not only inevitable, but necessary, PS5 is getting old. But as long as they blend within the art style, it's not a problem.

At least this game won't need to be patched for three months before it starts running properly. :messenger_winking:

I cant wait.
I will admit visually its not WOW anymore but i reserve that opinion until i see it in person. I personally think some of it has to do with the art style. Its a sequel- so improvements in gameplay is what i expect and i see alot of that.

You can see it in the trailer.

At around 8:20, Atsu throws here spear, switches to dual blades, kills a guy wielding a spear, auto pick ups it and then switches back to spear.
If you look closely at that point she picks up the spear from the floor (kicks it up with her foot) and then throws it. She uses her own spear later which is more decorative and a blue colour.

There seem to be some new additions like bounties but overall the general structure of how the game plays seems incredibly similar to the first.

Same type of structure, different presentation. And technically there were bounties in Tsushima if you count those six straw hats you have the option to hunt down in Act 2

That's right. Idk if the owned (blue) spear can be thrown or not, or what the implication of being 'disarmed' is - maybe just a cooldown before you can equip it again?

You arent forced though, they are just more effective, which was similar to the first game. The benefit of these new weapons was shown, kusarigama has a long range, ōdachi has slightly more range plus deals more damage to bigger enemies, dual swords are small and fast which is good against spear wielding enemies, but you can use ōdachi against spear enemies or use dual swords against large enemies it will just take longer.
Personally, I prefer the idea that I can play the game with multiple weapon types. And I'm not sure you're forced to use specific weapons, only that some work better against others.

More importantly, I think playing the game first might help.
You are forced in the sense that one option is tremendously superior to all the others.
It's like saying you are free to beat urizen first time you encounter him in DMC5. You can, but the game was obviously designed so you don't.
Try using the "wrong" stance in a late game fight with ennemies that can counter you, use uncounterable (without the right stance) moves, and gang up on you at 5 or 6 at a time. You'll have a bad time. Use the "right" stance and all of a sudden you are the one breaking their guard, and beating them up easily.

The eventual gran turismo 8 is going to be fun times. Gt car models are already better looking than real life and I don't they can improve upon them. Besides scenery, the game will visually look identical to gt 7, with the main differences being amount of content, better AI, physics, etc. All things not noticeable from trailers.

And just like this thread, the gameplay thread of it is going to be fun times.
The main thing fans want from GT8 is a proper career mode, better AI, and the obvious more cars/tracks.
Better graphics probably wouldn't even make the top 5 of requested things.

I didnt have a problem with it in the first game so I wont have an problem with it now, in fact with the different weapons being very different from one another I am more likely to switch weapons more than I switched stances.

And yet, come on here directly after that showing and you'll see exactly that, people complaining about how the graphics are just the same, it's just DLC disguised as a full game, they could have just patched GT7 blah blah blah.

The interiors still look fake as hell. They need RTGI and alot higher quality shaders.

It's alright I guess, nothing spectacular. Almost looks like Tsushima DLC with an ugly girl boss, which these days will certainly hurt their sales a bit. They definitely should've stuck with making Tsushima 2 with Jin, people would've been more forgiving about the lack of visual and gameplay related upgrades since they liked Jin as a character. Atsu is not very likeable from what I've seen. I get strong Abby vibes from her. The actress being a mentally ill degenerate doesn't help either; hopefully Sony told her to stfu for the next 3 months.

I'll probably pick it up cause there's basically nothing coming out this year and I can't keep playing JRPG remakes and remasters forever. I'll resell it immediately after I get the platinum trophy though. It doesn't seem worthy of being a keeper as far as I can tell so far. On the plus side there seems to be a lot of cool looking masks to hide her ugly mug, I'll be sure to make good use of them.

Looks interesting.

Visuals: you can only really judge graphics when you put it into context with playability. Many modern games accept input lag and frame timings from hell to achieve their looks.

I'd rather have PS4 graphics with SNES responsiveness than a tech demo with sluggish controls.

I think the footage would have been more engaging if they had decided to use Japanese dub instead of English.

Just like with the first game, I miss supernatural elements. Every culture has its signature hocuspocus.

The wolf was the best part.

Sucker Punch usually delivers so I'm optimistic for this game.

If you can't understand something so simple then don't call others five-year-olds.
You misunderstood my post. But don't worry, nowadays everyone's getting a certificate, even for just participating.
The very idea that accepting a rough-looking female figure from the 1600s requires having a "non-binary" mindset is so fucking stupid that all i can do is admire your courage in expressing it.
I admire your taste in ugly people. I assume you haven't had much trouble finding a partner.
Also, it's not a question of acceptance, I just don't want to look at an ugly character for 25+ hours. But it sounds like you've built up tolerance in that regard, so I understand that it's not an issue for you.

There was lots of supernatural elements in the Legends multiplayer mode, it wouldn't surprise me if that made a come back in some form at some point if not available at release. The main game however is firmly grounded in realism or rather, realistic in the terms of the legend of the characters (so they will kill a lot more than is what is normally realistic but realistic in the terms of the types of story that would be told about these characters and so,like many stories, exaggerated). They do tend to do spiritual rather than supernatural though, with the helpful animals etc.

I'm not interested in the game even though the graphics are great. Why? Because of the gameplay itself, especially the barebones combat system.
I'll go with Nioh 3 instead.

I mean....he was being absurd. That's just his schtick. You've seen his videos, right?

Should I? Don't have a single clue of what this guy is to be honest. For that quantity of 'likes' he is not doing a good job as seen.

He's got 650k subs on youtube so yeah, he isn't hurting. He makes fun of everyone in the industry. Here's a good one....

Everything about what they have and haven't showed screams to me that this new protagonist is going to be very generic and boring.

You're trying so hard that you're already losing the plot.

My tolerance comes from being down to earth and the ability to respect people for qualities other than superficial ones.

This could happen to you too when you grow up.

Only now I've watched the Stage of Play and I can say that this appears to be everything that I wished Shadows would be.

There's narrative, gameplay depth, exploration and enough side activities. And also looks gorgeous.

After being disappointed with Shadows...

I waited to actually watch the State of Play until I could watch on my TV last night, I do think the game looks excellent. Sucker Punch is my favorite Sony dev by a good margin and one of my faves overall so they have a lot of goodwill and trust from me. One thing they always nail is 'game feel', their characters and controls are fluid and fun if not always the most realistic (it's like the anti-Rockstar) and that's very important to me in any game. Art design still stellar, combat looks great, lots to see and do. Nothing mind blowing or super hype, it is a very safe sequel, but it's predecessor is one of my all time favorite games and I've got no reason to doubt Sucker Punch delivering another great game.

I'll be there day one!

Lol I asked grok to give me a consensus of the excitement levels of this game online ..... Neogaf was one the sources:
ztdfpZwZjvryHIPZ.png

i also asked ChatGPT

Excited 54%
Curious / Interested 12%
Mixed / nostalgic 14%
Not excited 14%
Indifferent 6%

Excited: 65%
Not Excited: 22.5%
Indifferent: 12.5%
.... 🤷🏼‍♂️

i have seen on Twitter people say that it looks like "more of the same"as the primary criticism... 🤔I think the biggest issue is that it took too long.

lol:
JBN7lDTiYFta8cx1.jpg

well, it seems indeed that this is the
"official" narrative this game has against it. 😬

Sony, Sony, Sony..... your template is getting old and stale

Nice, count me in for day one! Might finally dish out for a pro to play this and DS2. I really enjoyed my time with the first game, but there was a ton of room for improvement. This sequel looks like it's checking a lot of boxes for me.

On the topic of graphics: the first game and this both have gorgeous art direction which will help it age a lot better than a lot of games pushing for "photorealism" and hitting a wall of diminishing returns. Ironically, when the first game was revealed a lot of folks thought it was running on PS5, but now the sequel (which is a noticeable step up in fidelity) looks "last-gen" lol

I look at this in a few ways. If the games arent exciting the Playstation userbase enough to drive growth in sales then Sony may speed up their porting timelines to PC. I cant really see how they can increase revenue without looking at alternative options.

Will this game sell more than half of the original? I hope so. We need some positive news in our industry. Its painful to see Death Stranding 2 performing at around half of what the original did when it is so much better than the original in every way.

same i saw some of the game play looks ok but ps5 pro like nope.
that was running at 30fps wtf

The SOP gameplay was running on PS5 Pro? I thought it was base PS5 no?

I literally predicted exactly this. I'm not a prophet. Look around. I will also predict that Intergalactic will be on a similar level to TLoU2; small step up. It will look phenomenal but it won't be the leap Unreal 5 is doing. Just watch the trailer, or the girl with the eye patch.

I think it'll be an impressive game and seeing them do a new IP will be huge. Sony has pulled back on graphics though since 2021.

Graphics aren't the issue here; the game looks great visually especially if the art style is your jam. Does it tower over other single-player story-driven AAA games the way Sony's AAA during PS3 and most of PS4 gen did, visually? No. But, times are different and other studios simply started catching up.

What I'd like to see is more immersion in meaningful ways. Stuff like the B&W visual mode and Japanese dub w/ lip sync are good steps, but the original had those too (via updates).

So you mean to tell me when it was a Dude revenge story you was down to clown, but when it´s a female one then it´s bad?

TBF, from what I've seen the best female-led revenge stories are where the women use their smarts to get an advantage on the men (either than and/or their sexuality), especially when it involves them going up against groups of men and they're on relatively equal terms weapon-wise (i.e neither have weapons, both have swords, both have guns etc.).

Unless it's a story involving supernatural powers, I do think a lot of people would have a harder time suspending disbelief if a woman were fighting & beating even one full-grown man and they were even in terms of weapons or starting condition (i.e the guy isn't already heavily injured or missing a limb), let alone a group of men. The guys would just overpower her unless, again, she uses smarts to engage them (pick them off one-by-one maybe with long-range attacks out of sight) or has incredible supernatural powers.

These may be works of fiction but they have to ground themselves by some natural, generally universal rules of reality regardless in order to explain how the fictional stuff functions. That's what also helps give audiences a point of reference. BTW I'm not accusing Yotei of having this problem, though it'd probably help if her style were based more off of combos and (hopefully) chaining together combo attacks with the pet wolf, especially when dealing with small groups. That's usually a good way of differentiating the women from men in combat scenarios: making them faster and more nimble (higher agility) combined with being smart in isolating targets, misdirecting targets, and using longer-range approaches to weaken them before getting closer-range when the target is noticeably weakened.

I was having these thoughts around 2017–2018... Their games were becoming too homogenized and too Ubisoft-ified. I'm not sure if Sony is aware of this, but the buzz following these games (Horizon: Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part II, God of War: Ragnarok, Spider-Man 2) has been lukewarm at best compared to their original entries. Even Death Stranding, when you strip down the Kojima weirdness, is basically an ubisoft game too....Yep, the sony formula is too old and stale.

I'm definitely waiting for when SIE (or someone else) makes the next big evolution for story-driven games, because there are many ways to push that forward but it feels no one in the AAA space is doing so. Could be a combination of risk aversion + tunnel vision.

If the stories are going to be so narratively-driven, why can't I see the character's face in conversation outside of cutscenes or Bethesda-style conversations (which are unnatural, since most people don't simply stand around in place on the spot while having conversations; they move around, do many different body gestures, say things indirectly, don't say things at all in order to convey thoughts sometimes, etc.)? If my character's yapping while running at full speed, why don't they sound out of breath or winded when delivering their lines? Why aren't they skipping or slurring over parts of their lines due to tiredness? Why do all of my interactions with environmental objects have the exact same emotional weight to them? Shouldn't my character be more careful when picking up sentimental objects vs. random junk? If I try throwing that sentimental object, shouldn't it mechanically be way tougher for me to throw or discard it?

Most of the story-driven games out there, especially in the AAA stage, still seem "stuck" on 1st gear. They're basically as structurally advanced as what we got from SIE and the better 3P during 7th gen, as even a lot of the improvements in 8th gen (in terms of story interactivity segments) were small incremental betterments at best.

The most fair criticism even folks excited for the game can have is the visuals.

SP has made visual bangers that always one up their last game.

Sony AAA games are known for pushing visuals in the medium on console.

Now, you watch the trailer for this game and you can see:
-Reused assets with no visual upgrade from ps4 version of its predecessor
-No reflections in water for 2025 game that will have a ps5 pro option
-No upgrades to character models except maybe the NPCs
-Textures overall seeming a step behind things like Horizon, death stranding 2, or Ragnarok

Put aside your hate for maybe the lead character, or gameplay not being fleshed out more, etc and I think we can all agree this is certainly not up to par with what we've had up to this point from Sony, SP, and other developers for a 2025 title.

This is absolutely a phoned in sequel. I can't help but think SP wanted to make something else but Sony told them no, and so the passion for the project just never existed.

The fact it's similar to the first game goes without saying.

There's simply too much money involved in game development for genuine risk to be taken.

I'll pick it up on sale. Looks ok.

the first game gameplay loop was so boring. and the combat incredibly awkard. it looks good but i dont play games for the graphics.

i am excited to play nioh 3 after the demo. but this does nothing for me.

for old movies lovers it might look good though
