N64 graphics still look gorgeous almost 30 years later

"It is the first 2D side-scrolling game for the Nintendo 64"

"the game features vivid pre-rendered 3D graphics"

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is a 2D game

NBA Hangtime uses Sprites as its a 2D game

And so on...

There are only 5 3D 60 fps games on Nintendo 64.

There are others games running at 60 fps like The New Tetris. But its a 2D game.
Oh so now you moved the goal post. Great.

Why were so few games released on the Nintendo 64?

These are mostly simpler, safer bets, but yeah you don't know that, not in the 90s lol. Of course some were, but the vast majority would not be considered a consistent 60fps. Slowdown was prevalent and a buzzword in those days for a damn good reason. Effects were heavy, and they had no one to call them out on it like today. I don't call them 60fps unless I know they are, they targeted 60fps.
Bullshit. All these games are referenced as 60 fps games. Today and in its time. Not my problem you dont like that.

First Person Shooters - N64 wins (Lots to choose from)
3D Adventures - N64 wins (The two Zelda games and Shadowman)
Racing games - N64 = PS1 (World Driver Championship and Ridge Racer Type 4)
N64 FPS controls are so shit that graphically inferior Saturn ports put them to shame.
Shadowman & Majora's Mask are awful & Ocarina has zero challenge. Dragon Valor on PS1 was more Zelda than Ocarina. Silent Hill, Soul Reaver, Metal Gear, & Dino Crisis 2 offer more.
Racing games on N64 lack the budget of the best racers on PS1. Even unique stuff like F-Zero and Diddy Kong Racing is beaten by Wipeout 3 and Crash Team Racing.

came 2 years late, and wasn't ideal for 2D development.

a big chunk of Saturn games are 2D or 2.5D.
And, a fact that's kinda insane, ⅔ of these 1000 games was only released in Japan.
the popularity of the Saturn in Japan in combination with the 2D capabilities made it an extremely popular system among japanese devs

Of course you knew lol. The fact that the games were high res and super smooth was obvious. Everyone realized that Virtua Fighter 2 on Saturn looked absolutely insane at release. The difference between 30 and 60 was obvious for sure, and you could tell that Starfox of Saturn Doom were slideshows.

explain to me how they are shit... that sounds to me like you don't know what wat you're talking about.

or are you that Alien reviewer from Gamespot that couldn't handle analog aiming? 🤣

lol "referenced."
Im spanish so english is not my native language. Im sure you understood. These games are considered 60 fps games everywhere all over Internet.

If you dont like that is not my problem.

You can see in gamesack videos that Playstation had a lot of 60 fps 3D games. In N64 there are only 5. Thats a fact.

Precision is awful due to the stick being over-sensitive and uncomfortable due to your hands being clumped together.

...the stick is over sensitive? that doesn't even make sense. a stick can't be over sensitive... all it does is give an input value and the developer decides how to translate those values into camera movement.

there are games with tiny deadzones, there are games with big deadzones. there are games with linear reaction curves, there are games with ramping up reaction curves. there are games with fast turn speeds, there are games with slow turn speeds... and games like Quake 2 that have X and Y axis sliders to adjust the speed.

I said graphically.

You are also completely ignorant about N64s FPS controls. Every single one can be played with a scheme similar to modern FPS.

Quality over quantity

There was so much junk pressed to CD that generation.

Quailty over quantity xD

421 JRPGS on Playstation. (Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Wild Arms, Alundra, Breath of Fire III & IV, Dragon Quest VII, Tales of Destiny, etc)

8 JRPGS on N64 (only 3 in english, 5 in japanese)

And what are those JRPGs on N64?...

Quest 64
Aidyn Chronicles
Paper Mario

PD Ultraman Battle
Super Robot Wars
Zool: Maju Tsukai Densetsu
Robot Pnkottsu 64
Fushigi no Dungeon Fuurai no Shiren 2

Quailty over Quantity xD

What I'm telling you is someone like gamesack saying something doesn't make it so. PS1 having more games targeting 60fps games only makes sense, it had more games and many of them were super simple. The real crux of this conversation is that when N64 was swinging hard, it was unbeatable in graphics that generation. There are plenty of examples in this thread that PS1 couldn't come close to. And I would hope so, it launched later.

Graphically N64 is potato mode 90% of the time.

The controller joystick had a heavy spring auto-reset but after any amount of use joystick would go from 0 to 100 without much resistance.

I don't know why the thread is now about the N64 not having RPGs or Shmups. Or everyone's personal preference about game tastes.

First of all i don't care about your opinion. You already said you are biased against the console so your posts are irrelevent.

Secondly, your friend has a broken controller. Mine is fine.

The more the time pass, the more I realise how much retarded that cartridge choice was. I know they were angry at Sony and didn't want to give them money for CDs but couldn't they at least think for one second and see how much space 3D games were taking? Couldn't they have at least thought about using these magnetic DD disk from the start? They were hyping that add on so much even before the base console was released, I'm sure the format was ready. It allowed multi disk games and started at 64 MB, meaning that maybe near the end of the generation in 99 - 2000 we could've had 512 MB disks.

I know this console has a lot of flaws but this one is really the worst of them all. 8 fucking MB max in 96 and a lot more expensive than a CD to produce? Nobody liked these things back then, except, of course, Nintendo for the royalties they were getting for each games on that ancient times format.

Even crazier is how much better some of the games looked despite the crappy carts and how difficult the hardware was to develop for. It had 2 huge hindrances against it and yet still had the best looking games by far on 5th gen consoles.

VDP2 effects needing to be replaced by polygon models... wow... how awful...
I said effects, effects like the steam effect, all of this is free on the Saturn due to vdp2 but would be done on the N64 using RCP resources.
the N64 can only handle 10k triangles on screen at once! "HOW WOULD IT EVER COPE WITH A SKYBOX? THAT'S LIKE 12 TRIANGLES!" lol
This is half true, which, in debates like this, can become a complete lie. The N64 allowed up to 8,000 polygons per frame, and this was achieved in commercial games back then, such as Conker (whenever this occurs during a cutscene, the frame rate remains at 10 fps). This is a load of nonsense, however, the homebrew community managed, with great difficulty, to make a map for a game using Mario 64 characters render 8,000 polygons per frame at 30 fps, totaling 240,000 polygons per second. Well, Nintendo engineers knew the N64 could achieve such numbers but found the quality very poor. Overall, the Nintendo 64 is capable of rendering around 100,000 to 160,000 polygons with all hardware features enabled. (Nintendo quote). It's actually foolish to measure the N64's polygon count using Fast3D; it will always be around 100,000 polygons per second. The difference between the N64 and the Sega Saturn/PlayStation at the time is that the N64 could force some scenes with 4,000 or 5,000 polygons at the expense of the frame rate. Obviously, a game with 2,500 polygons per frame at 30fps will be visually inferior to one with 5,000 at 16fps.
anything that can be fit into 64MB, the N64 can handle... I don't think getting 400mb down to 64mb with proper compression would be all that hard. especially since that 500mb that Nights occupies ...

The absence of shootem ups in n64 running at 60 fps is not an opinion. Its a fact.
Fine, but calling an entire system a "failure" just because it doesn't match your personal taste is honestly ridiculous. By that same logic, if I don't like JRPGs and fighting games, I could just call the PS1 a failure too — and that would be equally stupid. I don't care much for the Xbox brand myself, but I'd never call it a failure either; it just doesn't suit me.

And if 60fps is really your gold standard for quality, then by that metric over 90% of PS1, N64, and even PS2 games are "garbage." I'm glad I never bought into that nonsense and actually enjoyed what was available at the time — had a hell of a lot of fun doing it too.

Honestly, 60fps has become the new echo chamber talking point for the "retarded side of the force." Keep chanting it if you want, but it doesn't make your argument any less hollow.

Is this relevant to Wave Race 64? Nintendo fans often praise its visuals and physics while "forgetting" about the frame rate.
I think so because racing game less than 30fps is discouraging.
wave race hardly has more than 2,000 polygons per frame despite being a 20fps game.

That and also the cartridge format: more expensive, with dramatically less storage capacity, shitty Nintendo conditions to third parties about royalties....

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask still looks way more appealing than the ugly washed out colors of BOTW and TOTK and the dark orange brown colors of Twilight Princess.

Plus Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are still the two best Zelda games.

all of that wouldn't have been a factor if the N64 sold as many, or more systems in Japan than the PS1.
but if you are in last place, and you have limiting factors, that's when devs ignore you.

Wave Race - 320x240 at 20 fps
Rapid Racer - high res at 60 fps
Don't fall for the provocation, I know this tactic, whenever there are two different games they will say "This game doesn't do this, nor this, nor this", obviously because if it did it would be the same game.

I can call N64 a failure all the times i want. Because that is exactly what i think about that system.

I got a lot of 60 fps games in Playstation and Saturn. And only 5 on Nintendo 64. That makes that system a failure because i expected even more 60 fps games on Nintendo 64 and Nintendo didnt deliver.

Dreamcast in the other side was an awesome system with a ton of 60 fps games.

I was used to 60 fps on Playstation, Saturn and even Pc with a Diamond Monster 3D i bought in october 1996 when it came out.

So dont say me what i cant call the N64 a failure. It was more than a failure. It was extremely desappoiinting.

Games like Wave Race 64 running at 20 fps. What the hell was that?. Not even 30 fps. It was a disaster.

Why were so few games released on the Nintendo 64?
significantly more expensive to produce (cartridge cost + nintendo licensing fees), and ROM size constraints.

PS was the cheapest to produce games for, and its library also has the most slop (800 barbie games).

Why just match? I can name games with better graphics and physics! 😂😂😂

See that's what I like about this. No need to detract from it, the videos prove my point of far N64 was ahead. Crazy you'd even think that is close. That water in rapid is not even good for ps1, should be 90fps with those visuals.

I think what you mean to say, is that N64 failed you.

In the same way Dreamcast succeeded in meeting your expectations...even though it failed.

I guarantee you didn't check gamepro for 60fps games before you bought them in the 1990s lmao. You found out later after you chose your console and now your here to defend it.

I was 20 years old when i was playing with Nintendo 64, Saturn and Playstation. I bought my Diamond Monster 3DFX in 1996 knowing perfectly what 60 fps and framerate were.

I already said i was used to play 60 fps games even in my Commodore 64.

Please, dont extrapolate what you did in that generation with what did everybody else. I wanted 60 fps in Commodore Amiga games. I was speechless when i saw Daytona USA in Arcade in 1994 running at 60 fps, before Playstation, Saturn and Nintendo 64 were released.
