Charlie Kirk assassinated at Utah campus event

"In a phone interview Friday, one of Robinson's high school friends – who asked to remain anonymous – said that Robinson was "pretty left on everything" and was "the only member of his family that was, like, really leftist".
"The rest of his family was very hard Republican – like gun-loving, everything," the friend said. "He was really the only one that was on the left."
The friend said he was stunned when he saw the news on Friday that Robinson was the suspect in the Kirk case. "I knew he had strong political views," the friend remarked, "but I never thought it would even go near that far.""

I'm not saying he deserved to die - he didn't. I didn't agree with his positions, but I absolutely support freedom of speech.

At the same time, it seems obvious to me if someone makes it their profession to go around saying highly inflammatory things like we should force minors who've been raped to deliver their rapist's children, that is something that some people (especially women) will take personally. The person saying this stuff is making themselves a target for crazies.

I don't see this any different than the left-wing trolls who were saying the government should force COVID vaccines on every person who refused to get one voluntarily. There have been plenty of people on the right threatening violence if they were forced into taking a vaccine. If there were a prominent left-wing speaker saying that in public, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they got shot like Kirk did.

Make yourself a target, and it's not surprising you get attacked.

Again, it's not right. It's wrong on every level. I'm just not surprised that this happened given Kirk's comments over the years.
In your personal opinion should he have kept quiet about his views?

It's weird that leftist (reddit) is offended for being accused of instigating the murder, yet they are celebrating it at the same time. Do they want credit or not? I think they are mentally ill or foreign actors

Saw a re post where they said if the parents were hard republicans and he was a leftist that just means he was left of his parents but still the right. Cant make it up.

Or you could all wait until there's confirmed info about who this guy is. An anonymous "high school friend" isn't exactly proof of anything.

About the only solid info we have is that the guy was a 4chan style edgelord.

Meh.
Reddit is silo'd off. Left has taken over most subs... the right has their own that they regularly shut down to outsiders.

Worst case is you post something people hate and they downvote you into oblivion.

Twitter is a full on doom-scrolling tunnel of hell. It's an assault on your mind and any good sense.

Don't get me wrong.. I actually love twitter in some respects. I love how LIVE it is when things break. But good lord is it a cesspool.

Both twitter and reddit are great for specific niches. I.e. product and retailer reviews on reddit, twitter for some non political current events discussion. For everything else both are complete trash.

Because he doesn't believe they should be able to murder their children.

I'd hate to be dating age in 2025, 85% of the women my son's age are completely fucked in the head, all on antidepressants, believe abortion is a valid form of contraception and immoral behaviour is liberating.
85%? is your son exclusively dating black women?

i can promise you there are plenty of girls out there who are normal, dont believe in murdering babies, or have a bodycount in the hundreds. you are falling into the same trap as this kid did. stop believing everything you read on the internet.

Women have actually become more conservative recently. Otherwise they wouldnt have voted for trump who ran on overturning row v wade, and has essentially banned abortion in half of the country. abortions are way down.
In the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump received support from 45% of women voters nationwide, according to exit polls conducted by Edison Research. U.S. News This marks a 3 percentage point increase from his 2020 performance among female voters. U.S. News

However, support for Trump varied significantly across different demographic groups of women:
  • White women: Trump secured 53% of their vote, a slight decrease from 55% in 2020. U.S. News
  • Black women: Only 13% voted for Trump, with 85% supporting Kamala Harris. U.S. News
  • Latina women: Trump garnered 37% of their vote, a notable increase from 30% in 2020. Statista

It's not my place to say what anyone should do or not do. It's a free country. So long as they aren't committing a crime or hurting someone else, people should live their lives as they see fit. I've got no problem with Kirk or anyone else expressing their opinions freely and openly. I'm a staunch supporter of the "free market place of ideas" concept. Let everyone share their views openly and the best ideas will win out eventually.

My point is certain actions come with an inherent risk. If a person goes out and does dare devil stunts, they're probably going to have one go bad eventually and wind up with big time physical trauma (wingsuit BASE jumpers) . If someone is in a high paying position and they go off on a racist rant in public, they're probably going to get fired (Mel Gibson). And if a person develops a public persona saying highly inflammatory things, they risk becoming a target of violence (Malcom X, now Charlie Kirk).

Can research why they needed to issue a statement if you like but reading the comments will show you why

I wouldn't have expected Clemson, in deep red South Carolina, to double down on defending celebration of murder

Let's see how this goes for them. They are currently trying to leave their football conference (the ACC) and switch to another conference like the SEC which is all conservative schools lol

Al Jazeera was writing about the concentration camps in the LNR / DPR and how Russia was holding the strings in 2021; long before the Western media. Al Jazeera got a lot of things right before others, because they did not care to keep the facade up, like the European media, because everybody needed the cheap Russian gas.
Do you not know how foreign media outlets operate? They're Qatari they will do what is in their best interest that's the point, they act in their self interest.

His view on abortion seems to pretty much align with the (catholic) church. I personally dont agree with that, but shouldnt a democracy be able to handle a different opinion? And this isnt about a single lunatic who went crazy, its the thousands online who now think the world is a better place, because someone they dont agree with, was shot for voicing his opinion.

You know what I find weird. That people look at this and just shrug with their shoulders saying "yeah.. he had it coming". I dont know about you, but personally I dislike living in a world in which I cant stand on a podium saying stuff like "I only believe there are two genders." because if I did that, I might trigger the crowd online, I might be labeled as a racist nazi, people might try to cancel me or in the worst case, someone might thnk its worth ending my life because that person does not like my thoughts.

They clearly indicate he's a troll.

Which means the "fascist" thing could ideology or yet another troll.

I'm not saying he's not left leaning I'm just saying we don't really know at all.
We really do though. At today's press conference, they said the parents said he had suddenly gotten more political and expressed hate for Charlie Kirk and his views at the dinner table, talking about how Kirk was coming to Utah. Then there's the 'catch fascist' on the bullet. And now this latest thing in the Guardian from a friend.

We know where this kid was politically. Focus now needs to shift to where he was radicalized online.

They have largely ignored the reality that Trump won the popular vote and that they are the radicals and extremists and also that they are the minority. But they are going to find out now since they openly celebrated political assassination for all the world to see. There won't be any moderate Democrats left soon after all moderates flee the party, leaving them permanently in the electoral minority for the foreseeable future

This does mean that as they continue to lose power, they will increase the violence. They aren't going to learn from this and stop being violent, it's likely they will become even more violent. Take care of yourselves, your friends, and your families

I'm fascinated that these people make me rage more than the actual criminal.

I feel bad for our ancestors that endured thousands of years of insane hardships so that these pieces of shit enjoy a lifetime of absolute comfort.
Because they are stupidly assenting to more killings of people that don't agree with them. In essence it's okay he died, because he was a "bad one". Oh well, then it's okay to kill off all his supporters too, because they would have "deserved it", right? It's just such dangerous thinking and rhetoric. These people aren't thinking of the bigger picture, more than 1 step ahead. Stop monstering your political opposition. Either side, left or right. It takes just 1 crazy to latch on to extreme political rhetoric of calling others monsters, and to then decide to go kill that monster.

If he was a leftist you would not hear about it from the conservative side. They tried to play the partisan card with Donald openly coming out and blaming the left, and then it all exploded in his face when it turned out this dude was a Groyper, the lowest totem on the MAGA food chain. Let's not forget Donald dined with Fuentes, which is probably why he wants this to go away as fast as possible, as evident when he was asked how he was feeling about losing a friend, he just said "I'm very good, let me tell you about my new ballroom". Total narcissistic psycho with no shred of humanity.

I didn't even know about Groypers until today. But I suppose it makes sense that the deep end of the rightwing spectrum would spawn these ultra nationalist, gun obsessed, ultra religious close minded people. It's like the worst parts of the American right but on steroids.

I don't know what it's like to be in the deep conservative South or in rural America, but I do have to wonder what kind of stories people have to keep telling themselves to justify voting in the current disaster of an administration. Why are some people so easy to manipulate and control? Why is it most often the people who tend to be religious? Does teaching religion at an early age make people pliable and easily incepted? It's terrifying.

Y'all really going to believe a tweet with no source for their information? The critical thinking skills in this country are going down the toilet fast.
We had plenty here who believed that but he wasn't one of them. He's saying the left are desperately trying to gaslight everyone into thinking the shooter is some right-wing extremist. Which they are.

I thought USC oppose the move, just like Gators oppose FSU. SEC wants UNC tho. They don't want overlap in those states!

But ACC has a very hard clause to just leave. At least not until 2030 or later then ACC maybe in trouble of breaking up!

Both are making stuff up
This one was correct.

But the point of this shouldn't be to suddenly harp and destroy all leftists. The real problem is heated and extreme political rhetoric can happen on BOTH SIDES, and it only takes one crazy moron to pick up on it and decide to do something. Everyone needs to stop monstering people who don't agree with you politically, left or right.

The guy is alive (for now) so undoubtedly he will get to make his statement about his motives.

Unless he's the wrong guy, I guess, or runs with a "not guilty" plea.

I'm guessing he will go with "Guilty" to AVOID the death penalty charge. Hopefully this side-steps a circus trial and just gets this guy out of our lives for the next 60 years.
I don't have confidence that we can trust any motive he gives us, regardless of what he states those are. Maybe it's wrong for me to think this, but I imagine there will be a tremendous amount of pressure from the ones he loves to frame in a way that aligns with political rhetoric. This kind of puts me in a weird place where no matter what he says, I'll question it.

This is super duper OT but currently FSU and Clemson have a lawsuit going against the ACC where they are trying to leave sooner than 2030

We can chat about this in the college football thread if you want because it's been a pretty interesting saga though completely unrelated to Charlie Kirk so I'll stop posting about it now lol

yeah, for now we have only the interview with the family member and another friend with the Guardian.

The more that comes out, looks like he was radicalized by marxist types. At least that depends where you look. It correlates if you follow published reports and major outlets. The Guardian's interview with some quotes from people at his school, for example.

He's a right wing groyper if you choose to follow the "Sources have told me" types on bluesky or X.

It's interesting watching the spin in real time.

I imagine he wants to drive change. It he hated Charlie for being too conservative, why hide it? Same if he wanted to shoot him because he was crushing the antifa types. No reason to hide the motive if he actually cops to the shooting.

Your default was to assume black women instead of the overwhelming amount of white vocal liberal women that outnumber the former threefold? Strange.

Seeing this stuff propagate in real time is crazy. Seeing how behind the curve people are, now that people are running with this 'groyper' bullshit.

The same as the stupid Trump costume on Halloween. When the kid would have been what, like 13 or 14? The stupid groyper stuff is based off this image as him supposedly dressed as a groyper. Look at the date, then check the date when it was co-opted. Everyone just needs to stop reaching at the moment and wait. It was literally just a 4ch meme.

In an ideally healthy and functioning democracy, yes. Does anyone think America is in that state right now? We just had a MAGA crazy murder several Democrats a few months ago and it's been memory-holed already. We had another crazy try to kill a POTUS candidate last summer. We have so many school shootings we're numb to them at this point. Hell, the one the other day in Colorado was "only" a couple of people so everyone collectively shrugged and moved on. These shootings only stay in the news if it's a famous person, or if it's more than a dozen people killed.

I don't think we're in a healthy and functioning democracy right now, and I think this has been blindingly obvious for at least the last 8-9 years.

You know what I find weird. That people look at this and just shrug with their shoulders saying "yeah.. he had it coming". I completely agree with you. It's unnerving that we live in this environment right now in the USA. I guess what I'm trying to get across is it should be obvious it's unsafe to ignore that we live in this environment right now in the USA.

Take it down an order of magnitude and think about it this way: If a person started a new job making their highest salary ever, and found the tech company they went to work for had a bunch of people with pronouns in their company bios/accounts, they certainly could put "Apache Attack Helicopter" in their bio/accounts. They could, but should they really expect that won't generate some drama, resentment, and maybe even outrage? We know it shouldn't, but we also know it probably will. If this hypothetical person just keeps their mouth shut and doesn't rock the boat, they know they'll avoid drama and get to keep their job. We can see the same thing in reverse with that guy who was just fired from Sucker Punch for being an asshole about Kirk's murder.

There's an entire group of the left, which is much bigger than a reasonable person would expect, that seriously wants you dead. They don't respect you, your culture, your history, your ancestry, your values, your religion, etc. And this rhetoric is amplified by democrats, who put targets on conservatives politicians by pushing these absurd claims of fascism and nazism

threat which is not protected by the Constitution."

Really trying to have their cake and eat it too with this paragraph.

They're stating your right to free speech doesn't extend to undermining the dignity of others, which they know isn't actually true... but then imply they aren't going to take action against speech like that anyway... so why even bring it up to begin with?

Probably right, maybe. As one can clearly see across gaf, social media, and the national media, that many people are heavily invested in the narrative supporting a particular ideology. With the nation breathing down their neck, would a hard right parent or friend admit that there assassin son/friend was influenced by their own ideology, or would they want to spin it in support of their beliefs system? I'm not making accusations, just some things I'm thinking about.

Edit: I don't see what is particularly humourous about my musings. If you think I'm way off track regarding the psychology of what they are going through, you could respond and push back.
