Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake announced for PS5, PC, Xbox & Switch 2

Which one of these games is the "best"? Is it this one?

I own maiden of water but I didn't get into it when I tried.

Well, I only played the first three games. But while I think the first Fatal Frame is the scariest one for the most part, the second is the best game as a whole.

Played the undubbed directors cut on OG Xbox a year or so ago

Really good game with a super creepy atmosphere. I loved the old run down village setting

FYI, this is not a new game, this is a Wii Up-port.

That version was never released in the US, back in the day. Only EU and JP.

This was a Nintendo SPD production, btw.

I really hope that they'll print more physical copies for the remake. Two previous PS4 remasters are pretty much unobtainable at reasonable prices.

are they calling it Fatal Frame in Europe too?

the german direct and Tecmo's european website list it as Fatal Frame 2...
super weird, and will be confusing to many if they actually go with that name, since people here will only know it as Project Zero 2.

how was Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water? I never got a WiiU, so I skipped that one.
loved 2 and Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. I usually don't play these type of games, but for some reason they just grab me.

Not nearly as good as Mask, but if you loved that one you'll probably still like it.

Nice, i enjoyed both lunar eclipse and maiden of black water, own both physical copies for ps4. Gonna add this to the list

Fatal Frame 2 is widely regarded as the best one in the franchise, yes.
Indeed is. I've always been torn between 1&2 myself. The first definitely has more "squeaky bum time" moments, less backtracking and better pacing, but the old village setting in CB is fantastic.

I'll start here then.
I do recommend the first if you want to play the third game. Those two are linked somewhat. 2 has less links and can be enjoyed by itself.

Safe to say that the best games are pretty much release order. Maybe flip 1&2 around depending on what you're after.

This is the one with the doll room, right?

That's the one thing in gaming that ever truly freaked me out... total nightmare fuel.

Played the original on PS2, this was the peak of the series, hopefully they make controls a bit more modern/fluid like Konami/Bloober did in the SH2 remake.

Apart from some gameplay improvements over Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, I found it to be the worst in the series, but still not bad at all.

Also, Tecmo KOEI remastered it for pretty much every modern platform in 2021 so you can check it out at any time.

That version lost a lot by changing the camera to 3rd person.
I played it and prefer the original PS2.
It's why I wish the old games were also made available on modern platforms.

Hell, I wished the OG Xbox Fatal Frame 1 & 2 had made it in Backwards Compatibility on Xbox One.

One of the scariest games I've ever played.

There was a moment where you walked into a room that had an ascending stair case - when you reached the foot of the steps a loud scream happened, and a ghost with a long broken neck comes plummeting down the center of said staircase and proceeds to fuck you up.

I was 21-22 at the time and I think I shat my asshole into several hundred fragments; and then had my mommy hold me. And then had a juice box and a nappy.

So this is a port of the Wii remake?

Also, why are they calling this Fatal Frame in the EU? I think it's a bit too late for that.

i mean if they just decided just now to make Yazuka offical title to align with Like a Dragon, its never too late.

Personally the best one is 2 but that also seems to be the most widely regarded opinion.

I'd say Maiden of Black Water is the weakest though it did have the best outfits 😉

Probably just unifying the name? Is the name changing in Japan as well?

Seems like it's a bit more than a simple port, the character models and lighting seems pretty drastically improved.

Looks like a pseudo re-remake.

These days I'm very cautious when developers say that they remade something specifically for modern audiences. Now I'm fearing for puzzles that solve themselves and GPS markers all over the map. And in the case of Fatal Frame, who knows whether they will try to "improve" enemy models by making them stupid sexy like in the last game. Cleaning up the base graphics is enough for this one.

It's keeping the original title in Japan. I personally think Fatal Frame is a better title, but it's not really ideal when every title including the recent ports have been sold under Project Zero here.

Hmm. I'm not sure then.

I agree with you though. While I think Project Zero sounds cooler, I think Fatal Frame is a better name and more fitting.

Most people will tell you 2, it's the obvious choice, but I think 1 is lowkey the best because it's the scariest and I'll tell you WHY it's the scariest.

Because 1 is the best "haunted house simulator", there's a randomness to that game, not just with the appearance of ghosts, but with poltergeist phenomena and other strange things that will happen as you backtrack around, in 2, while there are ghosts who will appear randomly, most of the scares happen as you're going on a point A to point B path, since there's less backtracking, it feels more like just "survival horror with ghosts" whereas the first game feels more like it's an authentically haunted location than a theme park ride with timed scares.

However 2 way upped the production value compared to 1, to where I wish 1 was more like it, but as far as what actually scared me the most, it's 1.

Somehow thought this was some re-release. Looks great! Never played fatal frame, so I'm definitely picking this up if it isn't broken.

Not buying until I've thoroughly checked the social media of everyone connected to it, developers, interns, voice actors, even the guy who once delivered pizza to their office.

I need to know their political and religious beliefs before I give them my hard-earned money. I don't want to risk supporting someone who stands against everything I remotely support or believe in.

Can't be too safe these days.

Is there a difference in spiritual beliefs? I've watched Death Note and Bleach and I can understand both views with zero issues on my side. Just get educated, you'll only strengthen yourself from here.

I wish the Xbox version were backwards compatible with the Series consoles. It's a genuine improvement over the original PS2.
I remember the first game having a few extras, but the second was pretty much identical outside of extra costumes. They had no graphical improvements over the PS2, and both did progressive scan 480p.

The Xbox versions were good for the old quick undub mod, but there has been a far better mod for the PS2 versions made in the last couple of years.

FF2 on Xbox had quite a few extra things. More costumes, higher difficulty, more ghost variety, they added a new ending and the option to play the entire game in first person.
