How long will current gen [PS5 & XSX] last?

I wonder what's your opinion as great connoisseurs of game industry on possible end of current gen console support. Are we going to see "AAA" multiplatform PS5 games 5 or even 10 years from now?
If the economic situation remains at least the same or even worse, and game development continues to rise in cost, plus if hardware is also more expensive, will we ever get a "true" next gen anytime soon?

I can say for sure that Series X/S will not last as long as PS5. With a new generation Xbox, developers will be able to address that audience whilst skipping Series S entirely, and if the parity clause stays, the X will be abandoned with it.

Seems Xbox (if the rumors are true) are ready to launch their next-gen console holiday 2026. I'm sure they will gradually decrease their talk of their current machines over the months that follow in an attempt to get ahead of Sony.

But as we've seen, nearly 5 years of cross-gen games and PS4 is still being mentioned. I'd imagine PS4 will end it's lifecycle when the PS6 comes out and PS5 will continue to live on until PS7 comes out...maybe.

I think we'll still see some of the sports games getting PS5 versions well into the PS6 lifecycle. If we assume the PS6 is coming out in '27 or '28, it seems reasonable we'll still be seeing new PS5 games in 2032.

however long the PS6 gen will last.
I don't think there will ever be a point where PS5 games stop being released. it's gonna be the entry level console for the PS6

The old Xbox 360 strategy. Would love if it pans out, but since most games are cross platform, I don't see how it would work today.

I can't see the PS6 being released before 2028.

This is kind of my thought as well. I decided to get a PS5 Pro when I found a good deal for a used one with a disc drive so I have the top of the line console for a time to come. I don't plan to get a PS6. I'll ride the PS5 until 2029-2030 and then go all in on a PC build.

There'll be cross gen at least 1 gen back from now onwards, so yeah. Also, no one worried about "true next gen" when everyone was still rocking a 1080ti even after the 2000 series cards were out.

They are launching a PC, not a console

A machine that runs Steam is not a "console" by definition, as you play the PC version of games, not dedicated software

PS5 will probably be getting a lot of PS6 games especially if there is a portable aspect to it. I think Sony is in the mind frame of having as many options at their disposal. I think if they have problems running on ps5 hardware then we will see PS6 exclusives from first party. As for third party I think they will port to the PS5 for as long as they can do it without significanf comprimises. Third Party will definitely be longer than first party.

Nope, MS is struggling to sell consoles because of how bad the Xbox reputation has gotten, which means it will take awhile for them to build a new install based with a new Xbox. So I see them sticking with the Series S/X for as long as the PS5 is around.

Also because of how bad the PS5 pro has sold I don't think we will see a PS6 until 2028 because unless the devs push the hardware it makes no sense to release a new console. They are barely taking advantage of the PS5, most games have been cross gen this gen so why rush a PS6?

Probably last till 2027 so around 7 years.

That would be the right time for a truly great GTA VI experience with all it's glory on console and the other big demanding games like Witcher 4, Elder Scrolls VI, Fallout 5 etc etc.

You say joke, but this has to be the smallest jump ever. Slightly better frame rates and resolution improvements I can barely see?
More like 60 fps now being the standard for console games.

The framerate jump was huge.

There's two ways to look at it.

If by 'last' you mean when new hardware comes out? 2027, 2028 at the most.
If by 'last' you mean how long they will keep getting new game releases, that's probably gonna go to the early 2030's.

Should really go on for many more years without new hardware surpassing it. Unfortunately, tech moves so fast and these companies seem to want to always be on the move so I'd say these consoles will last a few more years at least into the new console generation.

If Sony is releasing a PS5 handheld as rumours indicate than that just extended it more. Plus Switch 2 just releasing, there's plenty of reasons to extend the generation.

The latest rumours are not 2026, they lean towards 2027 actually. Kepler concurs.

2027 is looking more and more likely tbh

It's not so much a question of when MS is ready, it's when AMD is. It never made sense to me that MS could steal a years march on Sony when Sony had the headstart on designing their package and generally the two consoles would share the same architecture, albeit cut to preferred size. I could believe six months or less though, because that's more a question of accelerating the final stages than having access to silicon early. In some ways though MS has more work to do, as Sony is a fairly straightforward evolution in software whereas MS is doing a more complete overhaul (you would hope anyway).

That's a great point. We may see PS5 titles well into the next decade.

With Rumors of a low powered PS6 I think they will be cross platform for a while so early 2030s. This is unfortunate because it means PS6 is just going to be a better PS5. Ideally the next gen would be the next step in gaming. Whatever AI thing that ends up being.

If we assume current gen ends once we get next gen xbox and ps6, then from all kinds of leaks we could pinpoint it to holidays 2027 aka 7 years long, just like previous gen, if we add to that crossgen period when most games still got next gen and last gen version, then easly till 2030, maybe even beyond 2030...(my personal opinion is- that crossgen sux, but i understand why it exist).

We will, once again, have a cross-gen period of some years, imho. But this time, PS5 will deliberately be kept around as a low-cost entry option for consumers and the PS6 will be the normal option and PS6 Pro will be the "premium" option. And I believe Sony are retarded enough to also add a handheld into the mix as well. And when PS7 comes around, PS6 will be the new "lost-cost entry option", etc.

I think beyond 2030 is possible.

Console games are now the same as on pc, so as long as the devs can dowgrade it to run on them they will do it.

By 2030 both SX and Ps5 will be like the Series S or the Switch 2, the games will not look and run as good as the current consoles, but they will still be able to play most of them just fine.
