IGN: Borderlands 4 Performance Gets Worse the Longer You Play on Console, Randy Pitchford Suggests Quitting the Game and Restarting as a Workaround

Players have reported their frames per second count fluctuating and gameplay stuttering on console, even on PS5 Pro. In fact, oddly, particularly on the more powerful PS5 Pro.

Some players think this might be the result of Borderlands 4 suffering from a memory leak, although that remains unconfirmed for now. It seems restarting the game does help (some players are recommending restarting every few hours, which isn't ideal), but it's hard to say exactly why because reloading can trigger changes that would perhaps improve performance anyway, such as time of day lighting.

What we do know is that Gearbox is looking into the issue. In a tweet, Gearbox development chief Randy Pitchford told one disgruntled PS5 Pro user that quitting the game and restarting is a workaround until the developer sorts the problem out properly.

"Known issue of perf dropping on PS5 pro after several hours of continuous play," he said. "Workaround until we patch: Quit game and restart. Sorry for the friction!"

I think the problem could be caused by manually comparing items, so I dont mean when you look at weapons in-game on the gear slots page and it does it automatically.

I mean when you're forcing compare on the inventory page or in vending machines, etc. I noticed the more times I do that the worse it stutters (in the menus especially), as soon as I stop comparing that stutter goes away.

So maybe try not manually comparing and see if that helps? I presume everyone would naturally end up doing that at least once in a session.

Just get it patched Randy. You sold a lot of copies of this game no need to be out here "defending" it. Just tell us a fix is incoming asap.

Your unrelenting neurosis is hurting the game at this point.

Unreal Engine 5 (compounding FPS drops per thirty minutes of gameplay).

How the fuck do you get memory leaks on consoles? Memory management is one of consoles' greatest strengths.
By rushing a game to market that clearly wasn't ready just so you can hit your quarterlies and get a bonus.

Hopefully the refunded copies are taken directly out of Randy's bonus.

I've only put in a couple of hours and fortunately haven't run into any major issues. I'm loathed to carry on though as it does kind of feel like it's being held together with tissue paper and spit. The menus are a cunt to navigate with a controller and it probably took 2 or 3 minutes longer than it should have to fine tune the sensitivity since it uses a stupid cursor system to change things.

For the love of fuck developers, make sure you have menus that feel intuitive for the controller input! Dragging a fucking cursor around the screen is just wasting time.

I haven't noticed this issue on pc. It works fine for me all the time personally

Edit: Okay, I did not realize the issue is only for consoles

It is clearly a memory leak. They just need to plug it.

With the world patching, games release in a stable state most times, not in an amazing state. Pitchford is just a blowhard.

How's the performance on Ps5 in general?
I've seen a lot of talk about the PC version being poor but what about the console version?
Is the framerate decent? Is the IQ decent or is it another 720p FSR smear in motion?

Bruh, it's a memory leak, you don't need to be a genius.

It's not the fault of the game if the PS5 pro doesn't have enough memory to support this premium experience. Peasants that can't even code their own engines should wait for the PS6 instead of begging for patches. Randy's engineers have better things to do.

I would replace this entire UI with the one from BL2 in a fucking heartbeat.

Restarting as a "workaround". 🤡Reminds me of getting Turok64 and no memory card. Played the shit out of the first level a couple of days.

I f he keep's on doing his pr multikill spree, I expect him to say something along the Mattrick classic soon too:
Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to play and enjoy our current masterpiece; it's called Borderlands 123.

He said "Known issue of perf dropping on PS5 pro after several hours of continuous play," he said. "Workaround until we patch: Quit game and restart. Sorry for the friction!"

So, fix is incoming. Quit whining.

Leadership only reaps benefits, never consequences.

The game doesn't even look good enough to justify the heaviness on the hardware at this point.
That's UE5 in a nutshell. It's a shame. That engine kneecapped this entire generation.

People have the right to whine. We know this probably won't be fixed for a while and by the time it is fixed the game will be much cheaper due to holiday sales. So people have the right to whine about a $70 broken game.

5 year dev time and couldnt fix memory leaks before shipping the game.

no way in hell did they not find this issue before launch. they shipped it anyway.

So much fuss over such a mediocre franchise game.

I could understand it if we were talking about GTA, but.....Borderlands?
AI Overview

The Borderlands franchise has sold nearly 96 million copies as of September 2025, with Borderlands 4 making its debut and pushing the total closer to the 100-million mark.

Is he wrong? 🤷‍♂️

It's a reported issue, they're looking at it (and will undoubtedly fix soon) and in the meantime he suggests the workaround and apologises.

We're all wise enough to know games are released with bugs which get patched out. Hold off buying a game for a few months if this kind of shit annoys you so much?

then he should just say that then just leave it at that telling people to reset it just sounds really condescending.

Yeah its a console only issue. Thankfully i have a really great experience with the game on PC. Runs great and 0 crashes in 33 hours... .goddamn i already played this for that long

It's a workaround. He's not saying it's the long term fix.

At this point, does he understand that the "workaround" that he's laying out here just sounds incredibly INSANE?! It's as if Randy wakes up every day with his memory deleted from the previous day and starts every day as if it's his first day at the company.
