N64 graphics still look gorgeous almost 30 years later

Eternal darkness on n64 was really interesting. Full 3d, no 2d background., bad quality video on the web. I remember at the time of the first video on ign that was awesome for the n64.

OMG! Didnt know there was footage of that! If released, it would have been on the top of graphical complexity not just on the N64, but all the 5th gen. Hope someday that material gets leaked to the public!

Looks very Ridge Racery in style to me but being so unfinished Ridge Racer 64 is way better.

Maybe a bit panned, unfairly, for being by a different developer and therefor its own thing rather than a sequel or 1:1 remake of previous entries. Like Dreamcast's Daytona USA.

Guys, what do you say? Is Killer Instinct Gold more of a 2D fighting game or a 3D fighting game? Because it runs at 60fps if I'm not mistaken.

only the stage is polygonal
like mario kart 64 3d world/levels with 2d sprite characters
like super mario 64 3d world/levels with 2d sprite characters except Mario

just considering the graphics? arguably more 3d
like mario kart 64--3d world/levels with 2d sprite characters
lots of 3d n64 games still used 2d sprite assets so its reasonable to call ki gold 3d graphically.

as an aside... ki gold couldve been a lot different if the n64 had a cd-rom
ki2 arcade streamed the background from a HDD... wonder if a '90s cd-rom wouldve been fast enough to support that--perhaps a lower res version
ki gold also had lower-res sprites, missing frames, lower quality music, missing FMVs, etc

The first problem was the time of release. In that period were avaible only 8MB or 12MB cartridges. 16 and 32 later.

Both gameplay-wise and in terms of the sprite-like characters, it's essentially 2D. The backgrounds are 3D, but they still rely heavily on pre-rendered wallpapers. I wouldn't call it a "3D fighter" by any means.

World Driver Championship is really impressive.

Cars look really nice, especially reflections

Barely any pop in and lots of detail on the track, the part with the high rise buildings and the overpass in the first course of the below video is really impressive

Only criticism I can level at it is frame rate drops

You don't believe it?

Why did I even engage to begin with. You probably know there is one sprite character in the whole game, which I can't remember, and instead of just saying what you know, left that as bait to antagonize people. Or, just never played the game and are crossing wires from the youtube N64 montage you skimmed for material.

Erm, no.

Everything spherical (except for the Boo) is a 2D sprite but pretty much everything else is 3D polygons. And Bowser was a massive fully 3D character as well.

Not sure which game you played.

N64 Killer Instinct Gold has fully 3D polygonal backgrounds. It's the Arcade version that has the semi-animated, pre-rendered ones. And those took a lot of space so the game was stored on a hard disk.

Sorry, but back in the 90s nothing on the planet could match Gran Turismo 1, especially those night tracks.

WDC has more detailed tracks and more polygons on the cars but GT has better lighting and looks more realistic.

It's basically art direction > tech.

Is that verified information or just your own assumption?

P.S. Gran Turismo wins either way ! 😂😂😂

What i know is WDC uses a custom microcode by BOSS that makes the N64 actually use it's polygon pushing power. There are even some compromises to this such as there's a very subtle "wobbling" similar to Playstation games but not nearly as noticeable. RARE also did similar things but BOSS did it much more gracefully so the game runs smoothly most of the time.

Other than that, it's a matter of eyeballing for me. If you look closely you should be able to see the backgrounds in WDC are more open ended and more dense in detail at the same time. They are more like the backgrounds in RR4 but WDC has more detailed cars than that game and you can see more of them at the same time.

The one thing that sucks visually in WDC, imo, is the lighting. It's just too dark half the time and combined with the more blurry N64 output a lot of details get hidden. The Las Vegas track would be the most amazing looking track in any 5th gen racing game if you could actually see anything.

Plus it's the lighting and color choices that make a game look more photorealistic, (which Gran Turismo does very well) not the polygons or the detail.

Don't the cars in RR4 have simplistic design and geometry? And the primitive physics probably also saved some resources.

Nope, it even uses Gouraud shading on the tracks, it's the best looking PS1 racer.

GT1 and GT2 are more impressive in that the engine is often required to render 6 cars on screen at once, however that doesn't come close to the quite pretty F1 99.

I think Sega Rally manages to look good on Saturn as only 2 cars are ever required to be rendered.

Check out the heat haze effect coming off the cars on the start grid 😎

holy shit, he hit 60fps for a moment there lol (the target for the game is actually 30fps)

the new N64 microcode now allows for occlusion planes, meaning levels with large structures in the center now won't tank perfomance as much anymore due to significantly reduced overdraw.
