Sonic Racing: Crossworlds | Review Thread

Awesome to see its being well recieved. I was sold after playing the beta. Can't wait to really get my hands on it.

I hope they fix the music mix, there's too much mid-tones, it sounds muffled, voices and sound effects sounds great, but the music not.
It's like playing music on a bad smartphone speaker, it sounds so bad.

There are a few reports about that so I hope they change it.

And without any Nintendo coefficient, welld one Sega
Yup, the Nintendojo, Nintenderos and the load of Nintendo fan sites shouldn't be allowed to be listed on Metacritics... (not counting the Nintendo fanboys within Gamespot, Edge etc)

So I've been playing for about an hour now. It's fun, but I think it lost something since Transformed.

The races are still very dynamic (even moreso now that the 1st place racer picks the 2nd lap track), but it feels like they veered into Mario Kart territory where the weapons are too good and being in the middle of the pack is a death sentence. It doesn't feel like your skill as a racer matters as much as just getting good weapons, which is opposite to why I liked Transformed. The new boost feels very slow to charge, too, but I've only tried 2 types of vehicles so far (Speed and Acceleration), so I'm not sure if that's just a downside of those types of vehicles.

I'm sure I'll get into it eventually, but right out of the gate it's not beating Transformed for me as the best arcade racer.

i'd love to see this game take off, I just dont see it having legs over time.

I'm happy to hear it's being received well though, maybe word of mouth will lift it.

Tried the demo and thought it was awful.

The driving and drifting lacks any sense of weight. Like it's being played on ice.

You can moan about Nintendo and Mario Kart, but their mechanics are objectively better.

Runs flawlessly on my ancient PC but I can't say the first grand prix/cup seemed terribly exciting even if there's a lot of systems/nuance to its racing you can eventually learn to employ. I tried it at the fast speed after completing it normal too and it was just, I dunno, pretty flat feeling to be honest.

I haven't played MK8 or World but even the Wii's Kart most seem to agree is one of the worst entries for whatever reason felt better to play so I doubt this is any sort of real competitor like it's been posed recently, save for not having anything better on whatever system has it. Even Crash is better.
You'll see 😎
It's the same for journalists or random players:
They'll all change their minds after playing a long time to understand the game, the real efficiency of gadgets, the skill based gameplay (you touch the grass, you're punished. Simple... don't blame the game but your poor skill, guys 😆).
It's Initial D team's first Kart Racer and already a classic.
Period 😎
Sorry, Initial D games are so much cooler and more fun instantly even when you lose. The drifting isn't exciting, the power ups aren't exciting, even the main attraction of choosing/switching tracks mid race or whatever isn't. I won the GP without doing the tutorial, most systems you can easily see even if not fully utilise them the first time (well, you can't even use badges or whatever before unlocking them after the first cup after all). I think the previous games played better, the first one possibly the best at its core even without all the cool transformations or whatever came later in sequels.

Put a few hours into this yesterday. Yea, it's just not as good as Transformed, IMO. The core racing feels bad and the items are too strong, forcing you into stupid chain hit bullshit like MK. I liked the Sonic racing games in the past because they felt more like an arcade racer than a kart party game, at least in single player. The drifting feels awful too.

I was going to refund it, but then I remembered I got it on GMG, so tough shit for me I guess.

Super disappointed.

Transformed was the only one I played and I absolutely loved it, so you saying it's not as good makes me concerned. I'll just have to check it out for myself when the time is right. I'll wait for a price drop and then dive in.

Set the camera to dynamic. that makes it feel more like transformed. That one switch turned my whole view of this game around from a stiff mess to actually a lot of fun. .

I decided to splurge and picked the game up after enjoying the demo. However, the audio is awful. It's the first game where I have to turn down the volume, and I have partial hearing loss and tinnitus in my left ear. The BGM is very jarring at times. I hope Sega addresses this.

So I played the demo and I was a little disappointed tbh.
First up, the handling and overall feel of the racing just isn't as good as Mario kart world, it doesn't feel like you're connecting with the track, it's a weird driving on glass type sensation.
Drifting isn't as elegant or nuanced as Mario kart.
Power ups were a bit meh.
The audio is horrible! So harsh.
What's with all the dramatic operatic singing? I had to turn the volume down.
Transformed is by far and away the better game.

Roughly what I expected. I'll grab this when it's on sale.

I'm still enjoying MK World at the moment, though.
I will get this when it's out for the Switch 2... Still having lots of fun with MKW.

Since we don't have an OT that I'm aware of, this seems as good a place as any to say that Sonic Racing Crossworlds is everything I wanted MKW to be, and is fierce competition for MK8.

Set the camera to dynamic.

This. It makes a big difference.

Dunno why dynamic race camera is not the default. Game feels much better with it. I definitely gonna buy this when it goes on sale. Music is a clusterfuck tho

Nintendo won. Sega is dead since the Dreamcast anyway.

Wait...

82 (press)/87(players)>86/69 (yup, MKW is "boring")

War is over! Crowd has chosen their true gladiator:
giphy.gif

Sega accepted the challenge in short notice, Crossworlds has been developed in less than 3 years, Mario Kart World in almost 10 years.

Sega is the true warrior coming back from the dead.
Nintendo is a lazy cuck forcing players to play their boring intermission.
Nintendo pisses on the players🤯
Sega pisses on Nintendo. 😎

War is over. Even if MKW will keep the lead (sales), we all know where the fun really is 🥳

This game is extremely fun and offers a surprisjgn amount of replay value. Theres stuff here for hardcover sonic guys like the character roster. But theres also just really solid gameplay that can be quite rage inducing. The outcome of a match is highly unpredictable down to the last moments

Popular streamers are loving the game:

"Sonic CW is FUCKING AWESOME"

User reviews are still rising (91%)

and PC, Xbox fansites are in fact improving the press reviews even it's not taken into account.

Xbox version Meta score is currently at 88% and PC 85%.(only a very few review but hey it's still above the current metascore)

On top of that, there is no Nintendo coefficient on PC, nor Nintendo fansites boosting the score.
For instance, one PC reviewer said that Sonic Racing Crossworlds was the best Kart Racer on the market but only gave it a 8...

Yup, Crossworlds had to deal with harsher review metric (PC World: The Master Race doesn't have the bone seeing Birdo or a mustache... 😜), multi platform release (it's easier to polish a game on a single console...) but still has a stellar reception.

96% user score on Steam, that's excellent, but only 6.6k user reviews (20k+ is a good measure of success).
I think the price is too high. A simple meme game like Megabonk with budget measured in frozen pizza & Soda is grossing way higher than Crossworlds right now, in the top 10 while CW is #55.

I'm not talking about sales but overall popularity (sales will be good but not fantastic. The Sonic brand has excellent legs though)

Being popular with gamers will help the game in the long term.
TSR was ignored, had mediocre press but was saved by the Sonic brand and the first movie 3 years later (3,5 million units sold)

Sonic Frontiers had mediocre press, decent reception with the players and was helped by 2 movies.(5 million units sold)

Sonic Crossworlds has good press, excellent popularity among the players, 3 movies, shit loads of collabs, Miku, Minecraft, and monthly events (Miku tomorrow), new characters, stages (according to data leaks) to keep players interested.
Crossplay to avoid the empty online races.
It could reach the 10 million mark in 5 years which would mean a new beginning for the franchise.

Im gonna buy it as soon as it goes on sale. Hopefully it wont die out within a month. Pc playerbase is not that big, but noticed that 90% of the players are from consoles anyway

Is Hatsune Miku included in the game or is it DLC?
She is free and already available.
Her virtual festival begins tomorrow...

Crossworlds was very popular at TGS it seems:

Free Sega characters were initially programmed for 1 year (1 month/1 character).
Nonetheless Iizuka there would be more if the game is popular (spoiler: it is)

We can expect free Sega characters for years with specific trailer for each.

I get the feeling HDR is completely broken on this game at least on my PS5 Pro. It is extremely dark and none of the colors pop compared to other games.

Sonic Racing Crossworlds debuts at #4 on the UK software chart, behind the months old Mario Kart World

MKW will remain king but i guess it's physical (bundled with the Switch 2) because:

Overall

I've played 4 hours on my PS5 Pro. There's nothing wrong with the drifting. It's similar in mechanics and feel to a game like Outrun Coast to Coast. If you like that style of drifting then you'll like this. I do like Mario Kart World's more grounded drifting style more but there's nothing mechanically broken in this game, it comes down to personal preference.

I saw someone in some thread complain about boost power ups taking too long to build up while drifting. You can use a gadget that increases the charge rate of your boost when drifting, so it can be fixed if someone has a problem with this.

The game has good image quality on Pro with a mostly good 60fps in Quality mode, but there is brief slow down when moving through portals to another crossworlds track. This slowdown also exists in performance mode. I prefer Quality mode because it seems to run at a similar frame rate to performance mode but it's got better image quality.

As expected, Sega online events and road map are boosting the CCU.

Team Sonic Racing died within the first month. (bad online, no post launch content but was resurrected by the first movie, hard discounts and the long legs of the Sonic brand)

Sonic Crossworlds won't make the same mistakes.

The Miku Festival has doubled the CCU in a few hours.

Pretty much. It's like they married an old school Sega arcade racer to Mario Kart. The physics, collision and tech in MKW is more modern, meaning it's more sophisticated and dynamic, but Crossworlds' balance, track design and sense of speed make it the superior game imo. Not to mention that the Crossworlds gimmick itself is literally a hundred times more novel and exciting than MKW's unwanted intermission fluff.

I'm loving this game , it is challenging and way more intense then MK world!

It's not even close. Crossworlds has that freshness and thrill factor we got in MK8 which is sorely missing in MKW.

This is the right thread 😎

Done all the GPs and played a fair bit online. I'm loving this game! It's way better than team sonic racing. I think transformed is still the best kart racer overall but this is going to keep me busy for many hours to come. Worth every penny imo.

I tested the demo on my Switch 2 and the game is absolutely fantastic, but desperately needs a Switch 2 version, cause it really looks bleh on Switch 2
