According to online inflation calculators, the cumulative inflation between your post and this one is 6.3%. I don't know about you, but a price increase ranging from 66.6% to 199.8% feels like a tad more than a simple inflationary increase. Also, two-thirds of what I said back in February of 2023 came to pass. They massively increased prices since then. They also drastically reduced the available content, including no longer offering day one access to first-party titles, for two-thirds of the available Xbox Game Pass tiers.
- Xbox Game Pass Core/Essential - 66.6% price increase, stopped including first party titles on release date, and massively restricted the amount of playable titles.
- Xbox Game Pass Standard/Premium - New tier priced much higher than the original base tier, stopped including first-party titles on release date, and greatly restricted the amount of playable titles. Basically a 199.8% price increase from the time of this old conversation if you're comparing Xbox Game Pass Core in 2023 to Xbox Game Pass Premium in 2025.
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate - 76.52% price increase, and anyone who wants full access to game library and day-and-date titles must subscribe to this plan.

Pulled the plug on it this morning. Last 12 months, based on what I actually played, Game Pass saved me about $100. Which means I'll actually lose $100 next year with the 50% price hike. Game Pass went from being a good deal year round to just a rental service that I'll sub a month a year to play Microsoft games so I don't have to pay full price for them.
They can't seem to make decent games.
They can't seem to sell hardware.
They can't seem to maintain a service.
I'm legitimately excited to see how they'll fuck up next gen.

Most of my Gamepass time this year was Oblivion remastered. Which I just bought physically for $40 on Amazon.
I like my series X quite a bit, but it hasn't had much playtime for me this year aside from oblivion and Forza horizon. Can't say I'm willing to pay more just to keep access to those when I can just do a one time purchase.

Sure this one is ridiculous, I agree. I'm not some blind fanboy. Currently I'm looking at how much worth I get from Game Pass. I used to be super happy with Game Pass, right up until this huge increase basically.
The worse kicker for me currently is NO family Game Pass in Australia. If the price increase was inline with family pass availability in Australia I'd be ok with that TBH. Given the current double up of price gouging and lack of family pass in the small Australian market it's shitty corporate tactics 101. I'm not a fan of that at all.
This pricing puts Game Pass into a questionable state e.g. it's likely cheaper for me to just buy the games I'm actually interested in annually that the subscription value.

Yeah, anything I loved I've bought, everything else I can live without. I won't enjoy not being able to try lots of different games, but that's just a "nice to have" in the current economy.

They won't because they won't be in the fight. By next gen, they would be a 3rd party publisher only as I think their long term plan is some form of cloud gaming.
Raising the price on gamepass and their hardware is reeks of desperation. Or rather, things must be so bad internally that they would take a bad PR hit just to please the shareholders a little.

We already know they're making a next gen console, in addition to other hardware offerings. It'll likely be their last, but they'll be there - and ahead of the PlayStation 6. Like I said: I'm excited to see how they fuck it up.

It's not sabotage so much as a reflection of the price point. They spent billions on publishers, adding huge ip's to their day 1 service. The prior price was potentially feasible with halo, Forza and gears - now it's a completely different proposal.
People either pay for it or it simply doesn't exist. The model just doesn't stack up for mass market - has been pointed out multiple times even by Sony.

A lot of negative sentiment towards the price hikes and tier changes, understandably so from a consumer perspective. But snip this - game pass WILL become the netflix of gaming.
3 years ago I've bought up 3 years worth of gamepass with cheap foreign country VPN trick and even though I didn't pay a lot - I used the service since, and I've grown to appreciate it.
In light of this change I've stacked up another 3 years, with paying more per month than last time while the old codes last.
This is the first console generation that Microsoft got any money from me and it's already in hundreds of pounds, and I don't own shit.
I'm part of the problem, but winds are changing. (Not for pc crowd though it isn't!)

I was looking at the actual Game Pass website and didn't see it. Apparently Microsoft requires you to hit a button that says View PC Plans to see the PC Game Pass option, so it's easy to miss. The price on this increased from $9.99/month in 2023 to $16.49/month now. Only a 65% increase.

MS is just acting with greed..... because they really thing by going after less consumers who can purchase their high priced tier, can achieve a bigger operating profit than their current model....... problem is that unlike Netflix, Gamepass still hasn't got the same market establishment / penetration.

We don't know how much it is profitable. 1$ profit is profitable too.
And we don't know how profit is calculated. Do they allocate 1st party games costs onto gamepass results or treat them as "free" for gamepass? If latter - I expect that GP would be profitable for real, but Amy Hood would not be happy.

I doubt Good Guy Phil gets much a say, frankly. Xbox is on the hook for billions in acquisitions - it's clear Microsoft is running the show. I expect these price changes to stay because Microsoft is either deliberately killing Game Pass, or, they don't understand the market at all.

If you told me a couple years ago I couldn't even imagine Xbox GP going down the way it has. Pre ABK acquisition they seemed like they were ready to stomp out competition and Sony. These days they're doing mighty fine destroying whats left of the brand. I think its safe to say they want to reverse the damage from GP, to their franchises and want current Xbox users to actually purchase their games again.

It'll depend on the next generation hardware and games tbh. I think they can find a niche if they support their own games and other platforms like Steam. They can find a good balance of selling their games on multiple store fronts and hardwares.
Also a double edged sword though because exclusivity (or lack-thereof) of their games which are now widely multi-platform negates the need to actual dedicated Xbox hardware. Idk, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out 2027 and beyond.
