In a report from The Verge's Tom Warren, it was claimed that sources close to Microsoft have started trialling a free Xbox Cloud Gaming service, devoid of a subscription and supported by ad revenue.

Warren writes:

Sources tell me the internal testing includes around two minutes of preroll ads before a game is available to stream for free through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft is also currently testing a limit of one hour for sessions, with up to five hours free a month. These limits may well change when the service is officially launched.

Thids is not a free service tier MS, this is a time limited trial! Can you name things correctly, at least ?!

This is the long-term plan for Gamepass. Bookmark this post. By the end of 2027, it'll cost $49.99 for the new non-ad premium Gamepass tier.

Making Game Pass unaffordable in many countries of the world is a 'great' way to get something like this off the ground. I noticed in the new tiers, you get a better Cloud experience dependent on how much you pay. That's probably the end game - monetizing everything right down to frame rate, resolution, etc. Offering it free with ads is probably also meant to hook people into streaming - they won't buy games, will own nothing, and then eventually comes the introduction of fees and tiers.

I'm very thankful there are strong competitors to MS' offerings. Always have been, but now more than ever.

It was either when stadia or Xbox one X was coming out that i remember the promo attitude early on was all like "ugh load times, am i right???" or "gosh arnt elevators just the worst thing ever". Now i get their weird fascination with it since those load windows just became like 30sec ad spots.

I'm so happy to see so many people who were bragging about "the best deal in gaming" now getting their just desserts! So many of us could see this shit happening from a mile off. Now if only you'd purchased games instead of feeding the beast…!!!

For just cloud access, it's a good deal honestly. I'd much rather have that as an option than pay any amount of money in Ultimate per month for cloud. It's one of those novelties I'd only use for just a tiny bit in the off chance I'm not at home.

The real story here is that Ultimate is again paying every month for this shit when they don't even use it. I have used it maybe 3x a year for 30 min or less, and it is fine. I'd rather watch 2 min of ads 3x a year and pay nothing for cloud.

This is just the beginning soon you'll have to pay to not have ads in your videogames it'll be considered "added value" to have an ad free gaming experience smh

"a limit of one hour for sessions, with up to five hours free a month" is something a Chinese government would think of to control their citizens

M$ isn't really popular right now, and cloud gaming free but with ads doesn't sound very fun.
GFN free tier already does it.
They quietly did this as well the other day:

What's the free tier going to get? 720p?
Very likely. Redphx, the creator of Better xCloud, found 720, 720HQ, 1080, 1080HQ, 1440 tags in xcloud web app code. Since that screenshot doesn't mention 720, it's likely for the free tier.
Absolutely not. Ads do not belong anywhere near video games, much less interrupting the interactive experience.
Opening the game isn't interactive experience, the Ad roll starts at beginning of session.
Sad thing is they're only the first.
Nvidia GFN was the first, with their free tier with ads. Although Stadia should've been the first, but the world's biggest AD company was incompetent.

Wait, so GeForce now has something like this?

how does that work exactly? You pick a game to stream...it shows you an ad before you can play? Or is it like mobile gaming where it stops you in the middle of play to show some stupid ad 15 times an hour?

This says it is possibly 5 hours free month, then 2 min lead time of adds per hour.

So it would interrupt your game if you play more than an hour. Microsoft is really going scorched earth it seems. This feels like it's all Satya. Phil, Matt and Sarah are no longer in charge.

All these big corporations have aways viewed their consumers AKA gamers as tools and subject for them to manipulate and milk as much money as possible. It's up to us to navigate through the maze of their manipulation tactics to find the best ways to enjoy our hobbies without breaking our wallets.

how long until Jez, Timdog, and Colt Eastwood say this is a game changer for the industry.

They need some positive Pr.

Dude Timdog had a massive meltdown earlier today and ranted about Elon Musk buying the Xbox platform and it potentially being a great idea.

He later deactivated lol. I think he heard something on the grapevine.

I had a dream 😭
