Microsoft weighed up the pros and cons of going third party after the $70bn Activision acquisition, had the acquisition not taken place there wouldn't have been this focus.

One of the cons was that it would kill the Xbox console business as no one would buy them anymore and making games exclusive to a console that only had 30 million users wasn't feasible.

That existing 30 million users will still be supported with future multiplatform games, so they're not being abandoned, but Microsoft has given up growing the userbase any further, it's just not worth it anymore.

PR is there to reinforce the message that's already been approved and sent out. What they told Jez is not "new" information, they are simply pointing to the news from a while ago about the partnership between AMD/Xbox and essentially saying, "Per my last email".

Yeah. Above all else, brick and mortar stores had to worry about the value of shelfspace. This is not Amazon or some other online only retailer. Physical stores had to count the price of the shelf that is taken up and to determine if it is profitable to sell a certain item.

It's become in season to shit on Phil( and Sarah/Matt Booty), but anyone else sitting in their spots would be doing the same. It's pretty clear at this point that everything happening now is at the will of Nadella and the executive branch above the Xbox gaming division. Microsoft was fine with Xbox being a little side project( relatively speaking given the overall scale of the company), but that 70B ABK deal put the pressure on Xbox to deliver now, and the reality is they didn't have the cache to actually pull it off as far as keeping everything in-house. I highly doubt that Xbox would be turning into a major third party publisher in an alternate reality where they didn't make that acquisition. Xbox Series X in and off itself is a great console IMO. I actually prefer it( again, just in terms of hardware, the controller, quick resume, FPS boost, BC) to the PS5.

They keep pushing Game Pass and phase out their consoles slowly until nothing remains. Legit doubt there will be a proper next-gen hardware.

True, this did not work for Valve, but Valve did not have Windows on their machines either. Obviously, Windows is still a huge necessity for 95 percent of PC users.
Get your personal computer with Windows/Xbox all in one device? (Buy all your games from now on). That might actually work if presented that way. Not sure the Xbox first party is strong enough for anyone to be convinced they actually need an Xbox branded PC however. Especially if you can buy those same games on Steam anyway.

Those idiots at Best Buy must regret removing their Blu-ray section entirely from stores. What good is selling Blu-ray players when there's no movies to buy with them? Now there's a bunch of empty spaces in most of their stores with still nothing to replace what was taken out. Best Buy's movie section was usually much bigger and better compared to what Walmart and Target had to offer. They abandoned ship too soon when it came to physical shows and movies.

Xbox is dying because doesn't sell a shit, so retailers are replacing their Xbox sections with other stuff that sells well, like PS and Nintendo games or movies.

Bestbuy still has the xbox stuff. I was in there this weekend getting a Switch 2 pro controller and Donkey Kong Bonanza.

Well, if Wallmart and others stop selling Xbox sales maybe the ones who still sell Xbox games may see at least as small increase in Xbox sales.

But I assume sooner or later will also stop selling Xbox games. Maybe even this same year.

Yeah a small handful of old things or awful unsold Xbox One games. It might as well be nothing at all. You'd be lucky enough to find any new releases in stores. Maybe your stores have more to offer, but things are awful at every Best Buy near me.

Sooner or later GameStop may be the only place to find any Xbox physical copies and the store manager I talk to at one of them told me they only get a single copy or nothing for anything new most of the time.

Even Dreamcast on its way out wasn't this embarrassing to look at.

I don't disagree they are trying to kill Xbox on purpose but I doubt Game Pass is going anywhere. Game Pass is their main business model and they won't back down from it even Xbox dies. Their logo has changed to "play anywhere" and "this is an xbox" so it is logical that their next step is to be a publisher first with their product available everywhere they can fit.

The only thing I can see surviving from Xbox are Game Pass and their controllers, and only that.

After posting the costco firesale on Series X posts I got a heads up that EB Games in both Australia and New Zealand had also removed logos from their homepage, an Australian poster u/kensaiD2591mentioned their local EB Games had removed Xbox games from their store floor and were told they were out back and had to be asked for.

I've just contacted my local in New Zealand who also confirmed this happened at their store, I asked why and they said it was an order from head office to clear space, they don't have any more information and at this stage aren't sure if they will continue getting xbox games in.

EBGames is the biggest video games (only) store in the southern hemisphere, if anyone should be continuing Xbox it would be them, combine that with CostCo, Sam's, Walmart and whoever else doing it at the same time I think that's enough evidence to show it's not a one off store decision as it's too coincidental.

I can see both sides but they didn't do this for Vita or Wii U. Series has been in decline but I doubt it was doing way worse than Wii U right before the Switch launched or Vita in 2015.

These companies dedicated to gaming or with gaming sections still kept the poor sellers around till the next iteration(well not in Vita's case due to no follow up). Heck they still have PSVR2 stuff at my Walmart and that's not selling better than the series consoles.

I think retailers themselves are deciding they'll pull the plug as far as their stores are concerned.
