Walmart has started to convert its Xbox sections to Nintendo/PS

Thats what I was saying. Its not moving and hasn't for some time. The two price hikes and constant barrage od negative news didnt help.

I think retailers themselves are deciding they'll pull the plug as far as their stores are concerned.
I agree, I totally believe its the retailers themselves deciding to not attempting to sell stuff that's simply not selling

The ironic part is I wonder if this in turn could have a cascade effect and actually speed the process of Xbox pulling the plug

Them doing it near / at the same time shows information has come down and it not being a single company decision.

EBGames was another that got the memo.
They probably got a delisting notice from Xbox.

Big retail stores generally don't want to remove stuff because that's one less vendor paying you listing fees and leasing shelfspace paying for in-store activations etc, what they would largely prefer is for Microsoft to release some marketing funds via discounts promotions etc to get stock moving again.

Like typically a vendor can bargain with a retail chain to do X discount in exchange for the chain making a new big order. It seems to me like Microsoft simply stopped doing all that and may have asked for their stock to be brought back and their SKUs to get delisted (i.e. removed from the chains IT backend and all remaining stocks sent back, meaning even if you somehow find a controller or whatever the cashier can't check it out for you).

The big issue with Microsoft doing what they're doing is they're eroding their relationships with the stores and it will have to essentially be rebuilt from scratch when it comes to Xbox, they are somehow running a version of the Saturn playbook, as if they didn't already fuck up enough.

Think how HUMILIATING this must be for people at Microsoft (except the fu**ing upper management of course). They created a retail product so undesirable that retail is giving up on it! I don't remember to see anything like that

It absolutely will impact it, and I don't think that is an accident. It's manufacturing a business reason to make a huge move without shareholder lawsuits.

Maybe that's why Wal-Mart is pulling out now.....
A lot of people that shop there, should have.

Hm. Yeah, maybe it isn't just about the product not selling well. Maybe MS has made the prospect of leasing shelf space to them less appealing than it was before - by removing the sort of discounts you mention, for instance, or by eliminating other financial compensations or incentives.

That would make sense to me. It would parallel how they are treating their customers - reducing incentives, raising costs, disregarding their interests. And so the stores, like the gamers, say, "Fuck it, not worth it."

Walmart just shot itself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about large-scale distribution (I'm an expert), but respect and representation of all the major suppliers are huge parts of it. It's not like small-scale distribution, where you can succeed by choosing what to sell. If you rip off a big player, you're branded a traitor, and the only way to shed that stigma is public repentance.

This means that Microsoft, after hearing this news, will not distribute its products to Walmart, nor will it allow Windows PCs to be sold there. This is HUGE. Laugh all you want, but Walmart has lost an entire market with this move.

Walmart, apologize publicly and bring Xbox games back to the shelves, or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I feel some sort of bias here,

It seems a little weird that a lot of the retailers are all doing it at once though (well not at once, but within a couple months of each other). May not be fire but there's definitely some smoke.

I can see that being likely but that'd be insane, it must have been so bad that not even 3-4 million a year were sold worldwide. Last year they only moved 500k in the US during December which is when it normally does somewhat close to PS5 traditionally.

Half the forum just felt their back ache reading this.
I still remember for the most part how their video game section looked with Commodore and Atari/Coleco systems and games.

When you can buy a system off the shelf and not behind lock and key. Funny how certain memories you never forget, no matter how young you were.

You're taking crazy pills if you think there's any manufacturer in the world that wouldn't want it's products on WalMarts shelves (outside Luxury brands who would see it as devaluing to them I guess). Microsoft is a big fucking dog in the corporate world, but WalMart basically *IS* retail access for a huge chunk of America. MS is fucking stupid, but not that stupid.

Xbox sales are going down really fast now. Just a few days ago there was a news report that Xbox share of UK console sales went from 31% in 2022 to 10% this year. That's in the the biggest Xbox market in Europe.

We're probably at a point right now where MS execs are wondering if launching a next gen console is worth it when they can't bring anything new to the table anymore to reverse a 12 year long downwards sales trend. They tried to disrupt the market with Gamepass, double downed on that with the purchase of Zenimax and ABK and it all led to nothing. Instead of becoming a market leader with a dominant games console MS has conceded the console war to Sony and is now a platform agnostic software publisher with a cloud streaming service. Where does a next gen console fit in this picture? The reality is that Xbox has disappeared from stores in almost all international markets and the same thing is now happening in the UK and the US. We've now come to a point where MS could cancel a next gen console because its future sales projections are just too bleak.

Handing out whoppers and fries in the drive-through does not make you an expert in large-scale distribution.

it's the japanese culture copypasta

Not sure how widespread this is, but it looks like Walmart has started to convert its Xbox sections to other things? Is this another sign of the impending discontinuation of the Xbox console line?

Have to be honest here looks like the work of a console warrior employee, I think there's a lot of drama surrounding anything Xbox.
