New game as in not used or day 1?

I buy more than once a month a few times along with gamepass. But day 1 purchases are very few.

Need to know what group of people is being surveyed here. Because if it includes people who only play on mobile, then no shit.

Mobile gamers will almost never buy a game because they're almost all f2p.

If they only surveyed people who primarily played on console/pc then it would be an interesting statistic and show how many people are the type to just play the same fifa/cod/fortnite and rarely buy into something else.

This, should be limited to console gamers (PC gamers should be ignored as they distort the figures by buying every turd on the sun as long as it appears in a steam sale).

Once again Mr Fredricksen wants to create news instead of bringing news (yes, because these numbers without context serve only to flame more virtual console/pc war).

And that right there is why Gamepass was never going to work. Microsoft was trying to change the behaviour of casual gamer into subbing into a service in such numbers that they would subsidised the loss of spending from hardcore gamers. Unfortunately for them F2P exists, gamer do it need to pay to enjoy AAA experiences.

Most New games suck. Most people don't jack off over graphics and cutscenes like weirdos on gaming forums.
Games don't needs to be super expensive 300 million budget Interative movies.

I could buy a new game every week if I wanted but I don't. I just got the Platinum for Ghost of Tusishma today and I bought that game 5 years ago. I like to take my time.

Makes sense when you consider this

Somehow i expected this to be higher. Not sure why lol.

Would be very informative if GP and Plus, or EGS freebies and whatnot changed the frequency already or if this just shows that the audience that ultimately would be ideal for sub services, even at 30 per month, always was rather small to begin with. If you can stomach not owning your game, 30 as a rent and playing several games, is still cheaper than let's say buying two or even one game a month at full price, still cheaper than two games at a later sale or used as well.

I mean we got enough data about these gamers already.

PS4 players bought 11 games on average (worth around 350 dollars), so yes, the common player there buys the yearly game from their favorite saga and maybe 1 more at best each year.

That one/third of players not buying any games at all happens to weirdly allign with US xbox series marketshare, microsoft trained their players to never buy games anymore.

If mobile gamers are also counted (I don't know) then they are also skewing it low, compensating for Steam's game sales

We must be absolute aliens on this forum compared to the rest of the gaming market. Sometimes I don't even know how many I bought the current month because I've lost count / don't bother, lol
I wonder if GAF are truly unaware of how tiny a niche they actually are

For one thing, no one on GAF has phones or plays phone games. Meanwhile in the real world, mobile gaming is responsible for more than half the entire gaming market in revenue

I, who just this month bought on discs - Hell is Us, Cronos The New Dawn, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, Lost Soul Aside, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Ghost of Yotei, Silent Hill f, Final Fantasy Tactics.
Everyone, don't panic, I'm doing everything in my power to ensure that this rotting industry doesn't collapse. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

In reality that number rarely changes much no matter if the economy is in boom or recession or who is President

The number of Americans who consistently report they are 'living paycheck to paycheck' is always around 35-40% averaging 37% on any given year and that's been about the number for decades

factor in the amount of games flooding in the market, competition is tough.

I personally think game pricing is the biggest issue here.

Biggest non-f2p strata is 4 games per year
Making GP at 20$ (~4 games a year) a value and for 30$ (~6 games a year) a non-value

Mass market just don't need that much games

Makes sense when you consider this

That's because financial litteracy is only for the rich people

I bought Nightreign this year, and a 5$ indie...
So far I have no intention or interest in getting any other game. Nothing that has been announced seems interesting to buy at full price, the few that interest me are "buy in 1 or 2 years" material.

i only buy couple of new game per year, except next year, there are so many japan game i want to buy next year, and think about it, i almost didn't buy any western game in last 2 years, even if it was playstation exclusive (my main platform for +30 years)

PS: ass shadow and ghost doesn't count as japanese game so no buy for me

I've been saying that for a while. This forum does not represent the average player at all. Doesn't surprise me most people can't afford a $70 video game more than once a month

If by "new" games he's referring to buying a game day one then yeah I have only bought 2 of them so far this year but otherwise I would just wait for a discount on Steam or Humble Bundle

Someone want to construct a GAF poll with identical options to that survey? See how GAF compares to that? I could do it, but I'm not that invested in the subject.

I'd be in the "About once every 6 months category" myself.

This is an important followup from him. Not just about this, but about gaming news in general.

This is also why everyone is trying to get at least 1 GaaS to hit. If about a third are rarely buying new games and they keep playing the same game over and over again, are you more likely to sell them on a new game or sell them something in the game they're already playing? Developers/Publishers are simply spending money where most gamers are.

I mean it's true...and i keep repeating that.

And the sad part is even the most enthusiastic side of gaming keeps wishing for games to flop because there's a woman as the main character, or an actor said something they don't agree with, or the game released on the wrong platform so let's trash it, etc lol

Single players ARE doing worse overall and it will keep getting worse.

Seems believable and is prolly true for other markets as well.

Like I only buy 2-4 games per year as most games don't interest me anymore (especially western ones) and the games I play last me for months. Like Stellar Blade took me 2 months to finish. Xenoblade X took me 4. I played Elden Ring for almost half a year back when it came out. Now squeeze in a GAAS (in my case Guild Wars 2 and Helldivers 2, soon Arc Raiders) and time for new games become even more limited.

I just buy everything on a sale. Metaphor was like 80 euro on release, right?
The last Steam sale they discounted it to 40.

There's no bloody point to buying a single player game at release.

I wouldn't say it's an affordability issue. Games were expensive in the 90s too. You would have to be pretty damn poor to not be able to afford a $600 console that will be used for years.

It's an oversaturated market, but the ones that land really stick the landing and retain players. It is totally understandable that people would rather spend money on in-game purchases where they play with their friends. Online service titles have meta-game dynamics that keep you coming back for more. Single player AAA games are mostly one and done, have barely even figured out competent enemy AI yet, and they tend to run like shit.

game pass provides probably 90% of my yearly gaming needs, my entire purchase history on xbox for 2025 is "risk of rain 2, death stranding directors cut, alan wake 2 deluxe upgrade, robocop rogue city"

The issue is that normies and casual gamers who rarely buy games don't need and don't care for Gamepass. If all you want to do is to play GTA5, FIFA/FC and a bunch of F2P GAAS games, why would you subscribe to Gamepass?

Gamepass is of most interest to the hardest of hardcore Xbox gamers who buy and play LOTS OF GAMES. GP was hemorrhaging money because it was too much of a good deal for the people who spent the most on games and now could save money.
