Happy Columbus Day 2025

He pitched his voyage using a wildly wrong map, shrinking Earth by thousands of miles. His crew slept on deck with rats and roaches, no beds. He faked his ship's log to trick his men into sailing farther. He gifted Spain's royals parrots that swore like sailors. lol

Also I love this movie:

More and more evidence that early Europeans colonized parts of America before Asians came over the Bering strait. Microsoft is gonna have a LOOOOOOT of apologizing to do before every presentation :p

Solutrean.

Naturally those who hypothesised it were called all the names under the sun. I feel history will largely redeem them however.

I miss New Age Scores
RIP Vangelis.

It's funny, even Alexander did some horrific things. It's just how things were back in the day. You went to a new land and proceeded to make them your bitch. The Romans, the vikings, the arabs, the mongols, all did horrific things.

I do think it's important to teach about his crimes in schools. Cant gloss over history. People can then choose to celebrate or judge the man. It was 500 years ago and its not like he's running for president so the debate is all but an intellectual exercise anyway.

At the end of day, he left behind a legacy of evil and his deeds will be repeated any time his name comes up, which i guess is once a year. Couldve been a nice person like Marco Polo, but he wanted to get rich and sold his soul to the devil.

Today, the only thing kids are taught about George Washington is that he was a slave owner.
this isnt even remotely true. my son is currently in sixth grade and they havent even touched slavery yet. let alone talked about how the founding fathers were slave owners. dont believe everything you read on the internet.

No wonder the natives thought they were in presence of Gods

Anyway
Fack Dem !*
But i never liked columbus. In Napoli, a lots of people are not so happy for columbus. Cause he was from Genoa !
The north of Italy always have the money and the power; they punish the south since hundreds of years. Even today, they put ut their noses at us like we're peasants...
I hate the north.

*seriously fack dem who cares they went there first, the hard part was to connect this new continent to the western world.

Since when are you italian? :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Hey i was on that ship in Malaga during the year, it's pretty cool and when you consider they used to pack em with loads of crew and animals below decks it would've been an absolute nitemare of a voyage across the atlantic..

anyways Columbus was a bit of a cunt

I like how this thread became a Sopranos love fest, truly the GOAT.

That furio quote is true though, When I went to Naples last year and mentioned we were heading up to Milan after for a few nights the faces people pulled was hilarious. It's definitely true that's where all the money is.
That being said the Neapolitans were much friendlier to be around.

Columbus was a huge piece of shit. There's a reason states switched from celebrating him. He didn't discover anything.
Columbus and his men enslaved the native Taíno people. He shipped thousands to Spain to be sold, and those who remained were forced into brutal labor systems, mining for gold under impossible quotas. Punishments for not meeting quotas were severe, including amputation of hands.

His men committed widespread rape, torture, and murder against the native population. Spanish colonists, under his governance, hunted Taíno people for sport and fed their bodies to dogs. Columbus himself wrote in his journal about the potential for subjugating the natives, stating they would make "good and skilled servants."

He was pretty much banished from the royal court of spain after the kingdom learned of his barbarism of the Taino people... Not to mention he went into hiding after raping a 13 yr old girl in Italy

He was a pariah upon his return from "the new world"

The best representation I've ever seen of Columbus is unironically in the phone game Fate/Grand Order

I wonder if the big statue of him is still in the center of the main square in Madrid. The Spanish love that man and always have

Yup, and Tyler keeps making threads like this for "some reason".

Yo, Tyler remember the roman thread you made? You might have gotten the wrong lessons from the collapse of Roman culture cause that's the same shit that's happening in the US right now. You act like such a history buff but gloss over lots of details. Hmm, I wonder why?

And remember that there were so many reports of his crimes, that even the Spanish crown ordered an investigation. And he was convicted and served time at San Domingo on the island of Hispaniola.
Even for the low standards of the the time, he was a complete bastard.

Forget to take your meds this morning?

And then along came Amerigo Vespucci, which convinced everyone at the time that he was the one that had discovered the new continent and called it America.
Europeans: "We'll call you Indians because Columbus thought this was India."
Sioux: "What?"
Europeans: Fine. It's insensitive. We'll call you native Americans since Amerigo discovered you."
Sioux: "..."

Then they tried "First Nations" as if ANY of the groups around in 1492 were in any way the original groups that came over. They got royally screwed by war, disease, and exploitation, that's all true, but that was not that different from what they were perpetuating on the locals anyway.

The Canadian NAs the vikings met were kind of jerks too. One story tells that they started fighting some of the vikings because a Norse bull startled them.

Makes me wonder though what would have happened with the Canadian Beothuk in the long run if they had had peaceful relations/commingling with the vikings. Could have ended the same as with the French or it could have served as an inaculation against future European invasion.
