I agree with this. The standard response ITT seems to be using the legal definition, but if that's the case we should also be saying "allegedly assaulted" as we're going by the rule of legal procedure.

We don't use legal terms for everything in the real world for good reason. For most people an assault is a violent attack, and less ambiguous terms exist for things that aren't violent attacks.
Slight tangent, but people do the same with "fight" by using it to describe something entirely verbal. Unless people try to physically hurt each other it's not a fight, it's an argument. Being hyperbolic doesn't help convey facts.
