Let's try and guess the lifetime sales for the major hardware launches for the 2020s decade. You are free to add or remove items to the list below if you want. For example, I didn't put anything for the next Xbox console, but you are free to.
  • PlayStation 5: 125 million
  • Switch 2: 125 million
  • Xbox Series S|X: 36 million
  • Xbox Rog Ally/X: 2 million
  • Steam Deck: 8 million
  • PlayStation 6 (console): 60 million
  • PlayStation 6 (Portable): 40 million
    • PlayStation 6 TOTAL: 100 million

Switch 2.

I believe Switch 2 will make 3DS sales numbers. Still pretty good, but it's unlikely it will reach the Switch. There are several factors, including its price. The Switch was an impulse buy, the Switch 2 not so much.

The Switch 1 launched at $300, which was more expensive than any other console at the time, and stayed that way for three and a half years. It also used to come with no games included.

Switch 2 has neither of those problems. I do see a sales decline for it, but 3DS numbers would be catastrophic, especially with the start it has had.

I think it will surpass 3DS but not too much. At 270$ was reasonable, but at 500$ hell no

Huh? it has sold 80 million already. Assuming it sells 15 million per year the next two years (down from its peak of 20 million) that gets it to 110 million already. Do you seriously think it can't sell another 15 million after PS6 is out, especially with the telegraphed prolonged cross gen period?

It's not selling more than the PS4, especially with price increases.

If you think it's anything other than the Switch 2...you're smoking crack.

1. It's the cheapest entry-point by far
2. It has the most and biggest (arguably) Exclusives
3. It is designed to be sold in multiples per household (just like the OG Switch)

I can definitely see it selling lower than PS4 during its life cycle, but I do think the prolonged cross gen period for next generation will give it a much longer tail as well, especially if the rumoured PS6 Portable is real and keeps the baseline at the PS5 spec.

Voted PS5. Could very well see Switch 2 overtaking it though. Going to depend on its legs after the first year or two.

Why even include anything else? It will come down to these two.

There are three Switch 2's in this household.

PS5 - 108M
Switch 2 - 115M-125M*
XSX/XSS - 30M
Steam Deck - 6M
XBOX ROG Ally Xzibit - 1M
PS6 - 75M
PS6 handheld - 20M
Nextboxes - 8M**

*Potential plot twist = Switch 2 Lite is incredible and moves a lot more units than expected.

**Rumored to be more expensive than current-gen, so prices could start at $1K. They're about to Dreamcast themselves in front of the whole world in 8K/120FPS.

It should be a bannable offense to react with a laughing emoji to every post in a thread you disagree with. What childish nonsense.

Anyway, this is an incredibly tricky question to answer, because we don't know how dramatically macroeconomic conditions will shift in the second half of the decade. If we continue to have high inflation, tariffs, fucked up exchange rates, etc. etc., prices are going to continue to go up and you're going to see sales declines from generation to generation, so PS5 will sell less than PS4, Switch 2 will sell less than Switch 1, PS6 will sell less than PS5, and on and on.

But that's not necessarily what's going to happen. You could just as easily see current trends reverse and increased buying power (or decreased hardware and development costs or both) could lead to another gaming boom like we saw a few years ago. It's impossible to predict.

That's a tough one. I think Ps5 and Switch 2 can both reach the >100M barrier. I assume Ps6 will be able to as well, unless Sony screw up somehow. Xbox will be closer to the bottom than the top and SteamDeck/RoG Ally X will pretty much be at the bottom.

I'll leave it at that.
