Thanks Odinnii Odinnii

I haven't bought one of these since the retroid pocket 2. That screen is tempting.

These devices always impress me except for then they have bad components. The tech and form factor is good. If I didn't have a handheld PC already I'd consider.

They are a bit different in a sense it's quicker to go into a game, play a bit and jump out I feel.

I have Anbernic RG556, Steam Deck and OG Ally. Overall I like Deck the best, but the size something like these Android handhelds is more conductive to quicker gameplay like Metro or short train ride.

Good points. I upgrading from both Steak Decks and run Bazzite on the Ally. Best of both worlds and basic BASICS like sleep are so much better on Linux/Steam OS. Windows is getting more annoying by the month, it seems.

At first I didnt get why they chose to go with 2 similar devices, but it makes sense after seeing the size difference.

Yep, I have de-cluttered version of Windows on Ally just in case, going to put the new Windows interface from XAX on it and have Steam Deck for most of my handheld gaming.

Steam OS is still better by far though. I need to back to Bazzite on the Ally again. It's not like I have GamePass or play MP games on handheld.

I refuse to use any future handheld without a dual boot. Bazzite has really opened me up to putting me on track for considering this as well on my desktop in the future.

The gains and efficiency are so much better. Once this matures I am really excited to try it with proper high end PC HW.

I think we are in the middle of a new shift in gaming with these handhelds. As a parent and hardware enthusiast, I welcome this

Looks pretty good, and I like the price-point.

Given I already got a Steam Deck, I still am mulling over the Ayn Thor though. It's pocket-able like these to use when I don't have a bag for my Deck, and it would make DS/3DS games more playable to justify itself more for me.

Thor just looks uncomfortable to hold. Really needs some grips I feel.

Also, it's going to be like $300+ in US once everything is done between shipping and tariffs.

Edit: Actually $350 for regular 8GB model after shipping and tariffs most likely. Hmm… what are the tariffs from China now, 30% (till Nov bump)?

Not sure it's worth the upgrade from the Pocket 5 or not, waiting for more impressions. If anything, I'm more likely now to pick up the Thor.

It does come with a grip that attaches on the back to make things more comfortable to hold, so if I'm going anywhere that I'd be playing for a long bit of time I'd just bring it.

I also like clamshells for the screen protection in the pocket, and if it makes more games like DS/3DS playable it has more justification for the additional cost. The model that hits $300+ dollars also has more 4GB more RAM than these Retroids, which can be helpful with gamehub to play some PC titles.

Thor looks cool but pricey for one of these. I'm more curious about that sub $100 Anbernic DS device just to see what they can do for that cheap.

Yeah, DS and 3DS are the main draw certainly. The format is wonderful for that purpose.

Yeah, I saw that. My only worry is if at that price-point it will have the horsepower to do 3DS games well enough.

If it can handle anything in that library, I might be tempted, otherwise with the Ayn Thor I saw people playing Hades 2 on that thing with gamehub which made it easier for me to justify the cost.

I'm dumb. How does this compare to the retroid pocket 5?
Faster CPU, 120Hz screen (vs Pocket 5's 60Hz screen). Two extra programmable buttons(?).

The biggest difference most people will notice is if you're using Android's new Windows emulation apps (gamehub or winulator) to play Steam games. As far as I can tell, the 5 even handles Switch emulation pretty fluidly, though this might be able to upscale the resolution a bit.

Slightly better specs than RP5.
RPG2 looks nicer. Is the CPU difference drastic? Other than that and looks, what else is different?

The 6 looks much, much better in button placement and ergonomics. I was never convinced by how close the buttons are to the right stick on the 5, and that G2 looks about the same.

Anyway, I have a RP Mini and… I pretty much never used it after seeing how much of a hassle it is to set up Retroarch on these Android devices. And frankly, it's not that I have all that time on my hands to game, too.

It's still terrific what you can get today for that price (even if tariffs will make the final price much steeper than you'd like, usually).

I turned my Poco F7 into a retro console, it's got a 6.83-inch screen, and even then, I often feel like it's still a bit too small for comfortable gaming, 5.5 inches would probably just give me a headache trying to focus on such a tiny display.

Apparently there was such a big backlash to the design of the RP6 that Retroid decided to do a poll on X to decide whether to change it or not

They are also polling d-pad placement.

I love that Chinese companies have the willingness(& logistics) to do this kind of thing on the spot.
Oh cool.

Lose the function buttons, but not required.
However, I liked the speaker placement on RP6 more as the hands do cover them on RP5 placement.

Fookin hell?
The design of the 6 is clearly superior. Much better distance between controls. It maintains everything good about the 5 and makes it better.

I feel that on the left side, DPad should be on the bottom, considering the power of the handheld.

And the closer the stick could be to the screen the better as this will need grips to be comfortable.

lol they removed the RP6 store page from their website

Maybe they're going back to the drawing board after getting some shit for this design.

The G2 is still available though.

Bad choice. I don't know what kind of shitty comment they could have taken so seriously that they felt it was legitimate complaint.
I've seen Russ's video and the only criticism I feel was very valid is that rear bumpers on the 6 may make it less ergonomic while playing dual-stick games.
The 6 was scheduled for shipping in January. Now it'll get pushed back to the spring.

I find it curious that Wii U is harder to emulate than Switch.
Just a combination of Switch emulation (ironically) being older and more mature. WiiU emulation suffered for a long time because there were so few games to care about, the WiiU hardware itself was wide open by the time emulation became a thing, and the WiiU being "old news" by then didn't exactly help the emulation mature.

I'm still baffled the OG Xbox emulation is lagging behind. Yes, i know, almost no documentation, low level custom hardware, blah blah.
The RP6 might easily emulate PS3, Switch and 360. I held off from buying the RP5 hoping Xbox emulation would finally be possible as this would be an instant buy from me...

OG Xbox emulation is more mature on Linux, I don't think anything has been done (yet) on Android. Xemu runs great in Rocknix, which the Retroid Pocket 5 can boot to.

Here's a video with some examples

It definitely wasn't so bad to cancel and redesign like that. The acceptance of feedback and RP's reaction to it is as extreme as the extreme reactions. Weird.

I'm not normally one to care about DPad or Stick placement as I can adapt, but I will be sad if it changes as then it won't look like Vita.

I always laugh how Chinese companies are very quick to find these solutions.

Meanwhile, others just have a crap load of useless meetings spread over a month(s) to discuss. Not China, they just come out with it. The same goes for game dev or design. They are just rapid with turn around times. Really inspiring and impressive.

It's cool they're giving the choice. It could be cool to even make it a modular, swappable section in future.

I still think I prefer the PS layout though. And wish speakers were moved.

Stupid decision, imo. Very disappointing. The previous design was unique and stood out. This is basically the 5, which I didn't like the design of in the first place.
Same here, even less of a reason for me to upgrade now over the 5.

Because they use pre-made shit OEM plastic moulds that are easily available, which is the reason the build quality is shit as well.
A lot of time plastic injection molds are quite good now days on more expensive devices out of China.

The real reason they can move fast is that they already have factory contacts and now days they are quite flexible on making mould changes.
