Digital Foundry crew bash Windows for 18 minutes straight

Excuse me? Console gamers? Want me to go in on PC gamers and their girlfriends in discord?

Sure we console gamers are a snoody bunch of know it all children but you PC gamers are normies fucking full on mate. Half of people on discord are your friends from work who couldn't name any fucking videogame but wow.

You think we don't know about those people but we play wow too, we play everything eventually. Our eyes are everywhere.

We know how secretly uncool you all actually are.

We also know that like only one or two of you are smart in every friend group and the others are hangers on who you got into PC gaming by helping/making them build a PC. We know.

honestly windows has been mostly fine aside from some issues but i have been using 80 series cards for a while now. i also refuse to upgrade to windows 11.

now the xbox app i have issues with. the way they stored games was retarded and the way they store saves is even more retarded. couldnt find my avengers save from the gamepass version so i could copy it to my steam version. just plain insanity.

having xbox gamepass versions be behind on updates is also insane. i had this hilarious bug where Forza 6 would recompile shaders every time i booted up the game. thats 10-15 minutes. so stupid.

Ms just needs to release a gaming only version of windows that's basically xbox os and nothing else. Windows is windows you take the good and bad that goes with it.

Hey look.....Zac is drunk again

I lost all respect for Windows when they started forcing updates in 10. I now have a MacBook Pro, PS5, and a Steam Deck and it feels good to never touch Windows unless I'm literally being paid to do so at work.

I've seen an unusual uptick in anti windows youtube vids being recommended to me this month. Someone somewhere dropped a few billion to advocate.

It's almost like content creators jump on bandwagons to catch a ride on the algorithm wave. It's the same reason we saw so much Nintendo doom posting when the Switch 2 released.

MS is probably afraid of everyone using it for more then that. If it's still windows people will load it up and install all the apps they need and leave the ones they don't alone. That's basically MS's worst nightmare. No telemetry\usage data, etc.

They're right. Thinking about the PC as a device for playing new and future games:

PC Pros
  • You can buy crazy powerful hardware to push games much higher than consoles can handle.
  • Steam is pretty great. Other launchers are somewhere between acceptable and good.
  • More access to games that aren't designed around a controller.
  • Lots of options for buying game keys.
  • Modding, no pay wall for multiplayer, etc.
PC Cons
  • Windows can be a PITA. At its best, it just doesn't get in the way of playing your games.
  • When you run into issues, you have to put on your troubleshooting hat and start googling.
  • The Microsoft store and Xbox app are terrible. This is the biggest problem with Xbox pushing their next console to be a PC - they suck at that part of it.
  • AI crap being pushed at you from everywhere.
  • HDR support sucks
So you can be a PC player, love the power that the PC hardware provides, and also fully acknowledge that the curated Microsoft experience on PC blows. There's no hypocrisy here - it's a case of two things being true at the same time.

I know that I've been searching for Ally X, bazzite and 'will Nvidia ever have a linux driver' a lot recently, so google must think I want all these anti windows vids.

PC gaming is bigger than Windows. It can be a breeze if you want it to be. Personally I miss having to use a sketchy batch file to change the v sync setting. PC gaming has gone soft. I don't even have to keep D3DOverrider pinned to the taskbar anymore. 😭

But hey, at least you've got the agency to control the vsync status of your games. Many, even some reading this post, must take to X to beg for vsync. To make matters worse; many times the person being begged has hairy knuckles and nail polish. I encourage everyone to figure out video game menus. In most cases it's easier than making a GAF account.

it was a gamepass only issue with the game, not windows.

windows issues people talk about are mostly related to drivers, HDR, and other apps that are non-gaming related. you are conflating windows with the Xbox app or worse PC gaming. I use the ubisoft app, EA app, steam, epic store and the xbox app is the one that has the most issues.

PC gaming is actually in a pretty decent state and has been for a while. you have native dualsense support now. HDR on windows 11 at least has system level calibration which finally brings it up to console standards. MS are just bitches for not porting that back to PC but whatever, i will stick with windows 10 and avoid all the issues these guys bringing up with DRM based apps and MS copilot integration.

I think the real problem is Microsoft itself. An xbox app from MS on Windows should be the bastion of gaming apps. If ubisoft, EA and Epic can make better apps on windows then so can Microsoft. I think it has something to do with just how many indian graduate students they hire instead of Americans which means a lot of dumb ideas from third world countries are now firmly integrated into windows. I still remember just how many of my graudate TAs were applying at Microsoft while they refused to even look at undergrads as if we were just too dumb for them. Well, 20 years later, now those indians are running windows and it clearly shows with just how little innovation they have introduced recently and how user experience is even less of a priority than it was when bill gates and co. ran the shop.

Vista? Pfft, its been cool since M.E.
M.E. wasn't that bad for me from what I remember, vista is the first time the OS was legitimately working against what I wanted to do

Actually maybe m.e. was the one that broke interstate 76...I don't remember

Windows is one of the only products I can think of that just gets shittier and shittier with time. MS tying their future to OpenAI is only gonna make them shoehorn more nonsense into windows as time goes on.

But tbh Titus Tool has made it mostly fine. I will still gladly switch to Linux the moment Nvidia drivers for Linux catch up. Proton will only get better and better. I had never messed around with a Linux desktop until desktop mode on Steam Deck and it's such a better experience with 0 bloat.

As much as I hope that one day SteamOS becomes a no brainer and it is made more for desktop than portables, right now I don't see why I would switch? Maybe on portables it has advantages but for full blown desktop and nvidia GPUs?

I mean, not bad drop in performance by all means but why? On top of the list of games that require tinkering fro protonDB or just downright doesn't run because of anticheat. I mean why would I deal with this. What do I gain here?

Is windows annoying? For work I swear about the fucking software suite, teams/outlook/excel/ERP/sharepoint/powerBI almost every fucking day. At home, booting up and playing a game is pretty much smooth. I don't go on xbox app, microsoft store or other shit like that, I open browsers, or steam, that's pretty much it.

I've used linux / macOS / windows boot partitions in the past for school and tinkering around mostly for programming, but I have yet to be convinced to move for gaming.

edit - Gaming is on windows 10 and in no hurry to upgrade, I have nothing sensitive on that, its gaming 100%. For work laptop its windows 11 and I have no input there, windows 11 is indeed annoying but nothing compared to the suite of shit my company sprinkles on top of it for security.

As they should. Its a complete garbage, its a system that mostly goes against their own user. Most use because the lack of options for their sofware and their dominance.

Lack of gaming support in Linux stops me from switching
What lack of support? The like 12 games you can't play because of Kernel anti cheat?

I left Windows 2 years ago. Here's some of what I've played on Bazzite this year:

  • KCD2
  • Avowed
  • Tainted Grail
  • Black Myth Wukong
  • Doom TDA
  • Borderlands 4
  • Ninja Gaiden II Black
  • Oblivion Remake
  • Dune Awakening
  • AC Shadows
  • Dying Light: Beast

You act like most of us havent been PC gamers in the past or don't have a PC capable of gaming currently when the reality is many of us started building rigs in the 90s.

We are perfectly capable of it, we just don't want to.

Alex Battaglia, console gamer and casual player.

You must be the three guys in the video lol

Hating on Windows isn't exactly new, in fact it's called the Windows cycle in the past where you'd get a legendary version followed by a crap version and repeat.

The issue now is that since 10, it's been a downward fall, we're still waiting for the next great Windows but Microsoft doesn't seem to be showing any signs of that.

I'm a tech consultant so I'm pretty familiar with tech. I don't work with Apple nor Linux for my day to day because Windows works just fine for me.

I could learn Linux if I needed but I have problems with Windows very seldomly. Haven't had to reinstall my OS nor anything like that and I use my PC extensively every day.

Office integrations with Windows are great too. Pretty seamless.

For gaming I use pretty much every storefront and the last one giving me shit was the Microsoft store many years ago (maybe 7 or so. I think I even created a thread here) but since I subbed to GP it's been working great.

Oh yeah, a few months ago I reinstalled BF2042 and had to read for 10 minutes to configure secure boot so I could play.

Can't complain at all.

I could bash Windows for much longer than 18 minutes

It's a jack of all trades built by accretion of blobs of code for decades. It's generally a terrible piece of software and everyone just uses it because they have to since there are decades of software that only works on it

Mac OS is a million times better but no games

how come you dont go with amd instead? just curious.

I find that curious since some people told me that PC gaming was a breeze nowadays.
It's all based on expectations and perception.

If people wanna say PC gaming is harder to use or less stable now, I'd like to remind them of the late 90s through the mid 2000s, and kindly shut the fuck up because you're objectively wrong...it's literally never been easier barring shader stutter in some games.

There was a beautiful point in the later half of the 360/PS3 gen through much of the PS4 gen that PC hardware was more affordable, and we didn't have stuttering issues with middleware game engines because consoles didn't even have SSDs yet. Still, even back then some things were worse like controller support, no discord yet, etc.

Windows 7 I remember fondly not because it's better than 11, because I had more blue-screens to say no, but it's that 7 was a massive improvement that felt like things were moving forward. 11 by comparison doesn't have new features that move things forward from 10, just stuff people hate like copilot. I can de-bloat 11 to make it run as the best version of Windows, but when I see Linux get in spitting distance with a translation layer that should cost something...it tells me 11 should still be better than it is. Either Microsoft will improve it enough, or Valve will win me over to Linux full-time.

Still, I never imagined a day where I'd get to take my PC library in a handheld, emulation would be so good, we're getting ports of most Japanese games, I'm playing games at buttery smooth 120+fps, and the indie space is pumping out great games for cheap.

Yea but its not native, and native is ideal. If the linux marketshare keeps growing then they might consider releasing native games for linux.

The windows cycle thing is bs because the last good windows was windows 7. people try to pretend that w10 was any good but it was a piece of shit os.
