If you gotta do all that why not just get a regular prebuilt and use Steam Big Picture mode like everyone else when you want to navigate the UI with a controller.

Well you can't upgrade the GPU on the Steam Machine, which is the most common and important upgrade in a PC to play PC games of all, so if 8GB Vram isn't good enough for the future, what's the point of this Steam Machine in the long run.

the problem here is that any prebuilt you see on a site like best buy that has a gpu with more than 8 gigs of vram is usually closer to $2k if not above. The insane gpu prices have actually put pc gaming back a few years as there was time where all the prebuilts had decent gpus.

This is a low end/mid level PC, a my first PC. It isn't futureproof and furthermore I just built a PC yesterday for a buddy. Wanna see current PC prices for a non-future proofed build?
You want future proofing and modularity from what is likely a 399-499 prebuilt in a bespoke mini enclosure and I just don't know what to tell you.
None of this works like that. The point of the steam machine is it is probably the cost of half a decent video card for your real PC and because of the low cost you can just buy an upgraded one in a few years instead of upgrading the one you already have. Like a console and most also perhaps like an Xbox-PC. Do you understand what a decent gaming PC costs vs what this whole system will cost? It's priced to sell and requires no assembly. You want it future proofed at 500 bucks? That's impossible bro.

First I'll answer your question. Convenience and support. Prebuilt will be plug and play and Gabecube will likely have Gabecube verified games like Steamdeck. Now I will rant.

Yeah, i couldn't agree more, i've had to pay far too much for my last 2 gpu's, but if the Steam Machine is the future then the games arn't going to get any better than what we have now.

Yeah i do what a new PC costs, i've just bought one, i'm replying to the OP concerns in his post about 8gb Vram and future proofing and i agree you can't future proof with this hybrid machine, it will be interesting to see how much it sells and what price Valve charges, It's a sort of console to me not a PC and i wouldn't buy one, but each to their own.
