Half-Life 3 is in the Final Phase of Development – Rumour

If we put on our lambda shaped tin-foil hats and consider what remarkably evolved from game to game...

Half life - Novel storytelling & delivery
Half life 2 - Physics & Destruction
HL2 Episodes - intertwining other notable Valve game worlds
HL: Alyx - adapting the signature resource scrounging exploration loop into VR

What is a new half life game's design gimmick supposed be? Like really...If its not VR what does a new HL hang its hat on to impress again? VR crowbar combat, Story closure or answers to g-man just aint it.

Data mining claims the big new thing is going to be AI-driven character interactions, and incredibly detailed simulations like temperature affecting materials, liquid spill, wind affecting objects etc.

If I was a designer, I would use neural networks for "AI" of NPCs and for generating some parts of a level or so. No FPS has made any strides in better enemy and NPC behavior since Fear (and they just used Markov-Chains), and that came out in 2007.

Rumors out there said HL3 will have this included

Yeah I think AI enemy behaviours and the world's emergent simulations are to be this game's big gimmick.

Valve's discovery of the number 3.

The consequences will be enormous:
- Portal 3
- Dota 3
- Counter-Strike 3
- Left 4 Dead 3

Race X from Opposing Force and the Black Ops both needs to return and show the boring ass Combine how real badass villains do things. Hopefully some other new exotic, brutal, and cool alien races too instead of the boring combine enemies from Half Life 2.

🤔
kidding of course.

Seeing that Steam Machine is just an Arch Linux PC, with "exclusive", they probably mean it's coming out only on PC?

It might come out on consoles later down the line.

Valve have a history of releasing their games on consoles.

Likely PC only, but I wouldn't be shocked at a console launch a year or so later.

Maybe they didn't want to steal their own steam by announcing it all at once?

It's weird they still haven't given prices. Maybe they're trial ballooning the reception of the hardware to inform their pricing decision, and also the change in demand once they do announce a killer app? That way they can gather intel before setting a price they think the market will accept. I really don't know.

Man, if that game would Shadow Drop that would be an earthquake in the gaming community, one of the biggest releases of all time.
Imagine how many people would suddenly call in sick to work. Could be the end of civilization as we know it.

If its really true, why not anounce with the hardware???
Valve didn't announce Half-Life Alyx alongside the Valve Index either. If there is any chance it's being announced this year, it's gonna be at The Game Awards. When Alyx was announced Valve said they were going to show more at that year's TGA, but they changed plans.

Why blow you load all at once instead of letting each individual piece of news really sink in by having several marketing beats over any given period of time?

Probably the same reason why Sony didn't save all the big announcements it made last year (Physint + DS2 trailer, Astro Bot, Ghost of Yotei and Intergalactic) for an event that was also centered in part around PS5 Pro last year.

Basically what we have been wanting devs to focus on, rather than pour so much into raster… with DLSS to boot, ffs.
