the yakuza series contains what's possibly video gaming's largest collection of the most bizarre, twisted, demented side missions ever created...

Came to say this exactly. The campaign of Tsushima is fine, but Legends mode is fantastic. I expect big things from Yotei's Legends update.

The Witcher 3 side quests come to mind.

Up until Ciri was found I dare say the side quests were far and away better than the main story line.

I'm surprised and disappointed that nobody mentioned this yet: The main side missions in Greedfall are actually a parallel story going along the main game. And they are required to get a true ending of sorts. I don't even see the side missions in this game as side missions. They're that good.

The game is so heavily inspired by the ME1 formula that honestly it should get much more love. I'm excited for Greedfall 2 as well.

Horizon Forbidden West, the side characters were more likeable than Aloy and the missions were more interesting for the most part.

I liked side stuff in Cyberpunk but in my opinion it was a downgrade compared to The Witcher 3.

It was. I remember only one quest there, the one with a farm full of people being harvested. That was good stuff. IMO the setting works much better during the night with neon lights, etc.
