How would you prefer Chrono Trigger gets remade?

I know, we'd prefer new games, but we also know how devs/pubs are lazy these days and prefer the quick buck remaster/remake over being creative for themselves. End of rant.

So how would you like Chrono Trigger remade? Remaster of the original just in 4k/60fps? That 2D-HD style? Full on remake with 3D models?

I think I'd like the 2D-HD style. Only to still hold true to the original art design, while also making it look fresh and new.

2D-HD if anything…if not, then just release this shit on current consoles with some QOL updates. Can't believe this hasn't happened yet, just proves how out of touch Squeenix is.

And no, the Steam release doesn't count.

FF7 remake style but even bigger budget and ambition. Add in new time periods and areas that weren't in the original. Just go all-in and make something incredible.

There's no point in doing entering else because the original game holds up very well today. No "remaster" is needed. If they want to do something new, then go all-in with a new experience.

Keep the visuals intact, add the cutscenes from the PSX version, remove the extra content from the NDS version because it sucks and maybe, maybe rebalance the game a bit so it's not so easy, or just add a hard mode.

2D-HD style would be cool.

I prefer it in the style of Final Fantasy VII Remake. If they aren't going to make a big transformation, then it doesn't need a remake, just a remaster

HD 2D, but they'll probably change shit and fuck it up or "modernize" parts of the writing so I'd rather prefer them to not touch it at all.

I'm growing tired of HD-2D. I would prefer something like Pixel Remasters.

Include PlayStation cutscenes, DS extra scenarios, as optional.
Plus, unlockable gallery with artwork, unreleased contents, and anime OVA.

If they had to go 3d with it and not a pixel remaster, I'd want it to get the treatment that Trails in the Sky remake got from Falcom. Keep the heart and soul of the game intact while giving it a faithful yet new presentation.

HD-2D Remake similar in scope to Dragon Quest II. The same overall story, but lots of stuff expanded on. Voice acting throughout. Throw in anime cut scenes (remake the PS1 versions, and add lots more) and I'm definitely in.

They shouldn't touch it.
It's one of those rare games that you can only make it worse no matter what you try.
A good upscale at most.

I'm happy to own the DS cartridge and it would be even better without the stupid additions.

Also, I despise the 2D HD style. Kill it.

If I got my way:

- graphical style similar to Star Ocean: The Second Story R

- minimal voice acting (only for anime cutscenes and maybe a couple key dialog scenes) and for fuck's sake, have some great VA direction without the awkward pauses at the end of every line, I hate that bullshit

- do something to make the battle system more exciting (maybe take some notes from Grandia, FF XII, FF XIII, Clair Obscur, whatever)

- do something to make the character progression more exciting. Materia, sphere grid, license board, subclass system, weapon upgrading, skill trees, or whatever

Not a fan of HD-2D, better have a studio like Tengo project remake the game.
With the luxury of no memory or palette restrictions? Up the resolution a pinch, redraw stuff and add additional flair to the scenery. Like they did with Pocky & Rocky Reshrined, Wild Guns and Ninja Warriors.

The most I'd trust Square to not fuck up is some sort of pixel remaster or 2D HD remake like Dragon Quest 3

Though I find the visual style in something like Threads of Time way more appealing than the standard 2D HD from Square

What is wrong with the Steam release? Genuine question as I had no idea there a Steam version out!

Full 3D remake, maybe with celshaded graphics to keep with the anime aesthetics.

It should also include the 2D original.

I don't get why some people prefer the game not to be touched. I mean, the original is there if you feel like playing it. If you don't like the new one you don't need to buy it and continue living as it didn't exist. New generations should be able to enjoy the game.

Hmm. I'm not sure. If it's HD-2D I REALLY hope it's not Dragon Quest's style. There are a lot of design issues with that approach that would kill the pacing and feel of the original. I think something similar to the style they have with DQ7 reimaged but less goofy could work well.
It would actually be cooler to get a sequel.

Nothing wrong with it at all, it's just a port really though. Can get the same experience with emulation or my snes. I'd really like a full trophy list and a platinum. The Steam version does have achievements, but it's only like 10ish achievements and they are all just for getting a different ending.

Something like Dragon Quest VIII or Dragon Quest XI. A 3D game that features open fields and towns that feel like evolution to 2D JRPG field maps and towns and they aren't open world. They also feature a Toriyama based art style that looks or is cel shaded which gives it an animated/drawn feel.

I agree, I would love a sequel as well…but I'm not so sure I trust Square enough right now to make it.

They should not remake it. I don't think HD2D is good enough for Chrono Trigger and anything that goes beyond that has the risk of Nomura being attached. And that motherfucker needs to stay the fuck away from Chrono Trigger.
