I have a launch PS5 and it's a fantastic machine. But the price has gone up over time for both the base PS5 and the PS5 Pro. Call of Duty Black Ops 7 and other cross gen games are still being released for PlayStation 4. Recent hardware shortages threaten to push hardware component prices even higher. The PlayStation 6 needs to deliver a generational leap in visuals to justify it's existence and PSSR can only help so much.

The PS5 generation needs to last twice as long as a normal console generation so that the PS6 releases in 2032 (6 years x2 = 12 year generation). Otherwise, the PS5 Pro is already $750 and to deliver a generational leap either PS6 is going to be even more expensive or it's going to be a less than wanted spec bump making it basically a "PS5 Pro Pro" and there's going to be tons of cross-gen games anyway.

I could see many gamers just keeping their PS5 if the PS6 is only a small spec bump and their old system will run most of the same games anyway. This could lead to situation where the PS6 only sells like a Pro PlayStation but most people just keep buying the base console (especially in this economy).

Do you agree that's necessary to lengthen this generation in order to get a proper visual jump for next-gen?

Yes! NEED!

give it to me GIF

I agree that we don't need a ps6 right now and I don't see the rush in releasing one. Technology has kinda stagnated on the console side of things and sony should wait longer to see if any breakthrough developments happen.

The reason Sony made the PS4 Pro is because they noticed that later in the console generation people began migrating to pc because they wanted a power upgrade.

"There's a dip mid-console lifecycle where the players who want the very best graphical experience will start to migrate to PC, because that's obviously where it's to be had. We wanted to keep those people within our ecosystem by giving them the very best and very highest [performance quality]. So the net result of those thoughts was PlayStation 4 Pro" - Andrew House

Many people will leave the PS ecosystem if they don't release a PS6 until 2032. This would kill them.

I don't know about 2032 but it should definitely be delayed. There is no reason the life cycle of console hardware should be shorter/the same as software development cycles, which is what we are looking at now.
Let's just take Naught Dog for example, TLOU came out near the end of the PS3 cycle. Does it really make sense that the TLOU2 is the only release of during the entire 4/5 cycle and their next game after that is looking at possible release with 6?
And it's not just them, CP2077 came out in 2020, Witcher 4 is looking at 2027 release. If the software cycle is 6-7 years now, then hardware should be 10 years.

No way man! ZERO chance they can wait pass 2030. NO CHANCE!

"PS5 Pro Pro"
Compare the Last of Us Part II on a PS4 Pro with the PS5 remastered version (on the PS5 base console) or The Last of Us Part I (both maybe the best looking PS5 games).
Can you see a generational leap between both console generations or is the PS5 maybe a PS4 Pro Pro?
Or take Horizon Forbidden West or Death Stranding.
The graphic is better, but not so much like between the older PS generations (PS2 games were much better looking than PS1 games, PS3 games much better than PS2 games and PS4 games much better than PS3 games).
The PS6 graphics will be better, but not so much better. Maybe more like a PS5 Pro Pro+ and not like a "generational leap".

You're not going to get a proper graphical leap whether it comes out in 2027 or 2030; those times have already passed in past generations. Now it's impossible; people will buy PS6 to be able to play in much better conditions than on PS5.

7 years.

That's how long generations typically have lasted.

It's coming in 2027 and PS5 will still be supported (first party releases w/PS6) until 2030 at the earliest imo.

If developers don't have the tools they need to put forth their creative vision, then they suck. Let's just get comfy with the current systems. It takes ages to make games these days.

Generations in software don't exist anymore. Nobody can make a game that will require PS6 level specs to even run (unless you want 10+ year dev time and 1 billion dollar budgets). Hardly anyone can do so with the PS5. Sony will release a device called "PS6", along with PS Portable, PS "TV", PS6 Pro, etc in the coming years in order to expand their hardware lineup across various price points and form factors. But 99% of the software will run on all of those as well as PS5. Maybe even PS4 in some cases.

The game isn't about getting all PS5 owners to upgrade to PS6. It's about keeping people in the ecosystem regardless of which device they are using.

By this same logic sony should have never released the PS5 and we should still be on PS4 Pro

I've been calling the PS5 the "ps4 super pro" since 2020

we live in a post console world where consoles still exist but aren't "needed" anymore that doesn't mean progress should come to a halt

if people really feel this way stop giving them money

Hell nah. The public has a voracious appetite to chuck their PS5s in the basement and buy a $900 PS6 so that the puddle settings can go from Low to Medium. Everyone will see a ton of value in that. Especially in these financially trying times. They need some good entertainment to get their minds off monetary woes.

All the third party devs are working on titles that would bring a PS5 Pro, Switch 2 and 5080 to their knees. Someone needs to make a machine that can play those games.

There is more to a generational leap than just image quality. In previous gens options for things like higher framerates, and ray tracing, where not an option.
