Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

BF6 has no ray tracing, also runs at 60 fps with an insane amount of shit happening on screen, not to mention destruction and has vastly superior building textures.
And afaik it has a lot of problems with light bleeding artifacts. Doom also has a good destruction and gore physics, but yeah, path tracing there mostly shines in the indoor sections.

Yeah so has digital foundry lost the plot completely? Their graphics of the year list is genuinely bizarre.

So much crying over a list made by journalists. Every year it's the same thing, it will never please anyone.
They set the criteria, it's their channel. You may disagree, and that's not the problem. But spending three pages complaining about this is the height of having nothing better to do.

I haven't seen the video yet, but I assume that:

Metroid Prime 4 is a beautiful game by Switch 1 standards.
Earthion is a game for the Mega Drive in 2025, and it pushes the boundaries of what's currently available on the system.
I believe Doom is preferred because it's a game with well-developed ray tracing. Games with good ray tracing implementations will always be favored.
AC Shadows running on consoles with RT is quite impressive.
I believe Death Stranding still showcases some of the power of rasterization. The 3D models are well done.
DL: The Beast has an impressive RT experience.
Silent Hill f gives off a really good horror vibe, it's one of the strong points of UE5.
I'm not familiar with Routine, but from the images, it looks like a photorealistic game.

KCD2 is impressive, but I don't think it's as advanced as the first one, which was already very well done. But that might just be me being picky about the game.

Also, it's worth mentioning that the list consists of games they've played, so there are differences.

Only Ghost of Yotei and Mafia are somewhat disconnected, as they don't have anything particularly special about them. Other options could be included.

My main gripe with kcd2 is the overly blurry skybox which does hurt the presentation a lot imo, overall it's still a decent fidelity upgrade over stuff kcd1 presented back in the day, never a fan of the first game visually speaking

I think we need to do our own comprehensive best graphics of the year. DF ain't it lol.
This year was quite a let down in terms of graphics though.
Most visually impressive game I've played was IJ and that's from Dec of 24.
What DF put into top-3 is fine, there weren't anything which I'd like to change there even though the games themselves are hardly graphically impressive.
Well, I'd swap out DS2 for Mafia probably since this one is actually looking next gen while DS2 is barely better than a PS4 game.

Only recently got around to playing MGS Delta and wow that is easily one of the best looking games this generation no? I'm playing with hardware lumen and enhanced material settings modded in and it looks incredibly CG like, really what I was hoping for visually this gen. Insane model detail and lighting quality. I'll have to post some screens soon.

Also, finally finished ghost of yotei and that is an incredibly inconsistent looking game and a very early ps4 game technically. I don't think I've ever spent so much time in photo mode admiring a beautiful vista and the next moment laughing at how crap the next cutscene or area looked. Art direction was excellent and I have to give credit to the impressive draw distance but wow the lighting, materials and water especially were so ass, even in cutscenes often. Not even having things like proper IK during cutscenes looked soo poor. The RTGI implementation was weak too, so strange to see DF hype it up, I ended up playing it in performance mode because it was so weakly implemented and couldn't make up for the poor visuals in other aspects.

The animations during the conversations cutscenes are embarrassing and I agree, it's extremely inconsistent graphical wise. Some parts look great, others look awful. Npcs look really bad too. And the fact that the open world has so many invisible barriers is again embarrassing

would you put it in your top 10? how would you rate it compared to say Spiderman 2 or DS2?

it is an absolutely stunning game. again, didnt even get an honorable mention from DF.

Dafuq is this shit. You dont even have the balls to tag me to have a proper discussion? Pussy. Imagine thinking otherwise in regards to Decima engine, Guerilla's baby, not being a top grade engine. Brain dead.
Decmia is great a making completely non-interactable breathtaking landscapes and vistas. But I like more interaction in my game world.

Top 10 this year is quite tricky, I don't feel there's been too many standouts honestly. I'm not against it being in the top 10, but I don't think it's anywhere near the top 3. For the recent sony games, SM2 is probably the best technically, but that had so many rough spots and seemed very rushed. DS2 had by far the best cutscenes, but gameplay visuals were quite meh. GOY looks amazing at points, definitely has the best art direction and when everything comes together it can look great, but it's without a doubt the weakest technically. All of the 3 games are uneven, but GOY has the lowest lows and has bad rough spots even in cutscenes.

yep. its not the best year for sure. AC shadows is head and shoulders above everything else. I will probably just do a top 5 and honorable mentions for the rest. And yes, id give DS2 an honorable mention for the cutscenes, fireworks level and snowy mountains. Going to try and play a couple of UE5 games on gamepass before doing a final list. But right now, id say AC Shadows followed by black hawk down then KCD2 and MGS3. my guess is Silent Hill F or Ghosts 2 will end up taking the fifth spot.

Id probably just do honorable mentions for Avowed, South of Midnight, Expedition 33, BF6, Precinct 13, Mafia, Arc Raiders and DS2. Good, but not consistently good. Definitely better than the garbage DF put in their list though.

Neogaf should've had the best graphics category in the Goty poll we are doing.
You can create a thread just for the graphics. Make it a poll. Wont give us a top ten unless you leave the poll open with multiple answers but that has its own flaws.

Yeah we may as well list our own. For me personally my top spots (without a specific order) would be -

  • MGS Delta
  • Mafia
  • AC Shadows
  • Silent Hill F
  • Expedition 33

    With honourable mentions to
  • Cronos
  • Keeper
  • DS2 (cutscenes and the fireworks level)
  • GOY (art direction is top tier)
  • South of midnight (nice art style and the stop animation was great in cutscenes)
  • Lost records: bloom and rage (surprisingly great character and model detail with nice lighting, but was an absolute 0/10 tier game otherwise.)

Otherwise, I was very disappointed with Doom and the path tracing patch, much less impactful than in Indiana Jones. It was a pretty meh year overall visually imo.

KDC1 is a visual masterpiece, what are you talking about?

No need for pity picks, i would probably just name shadow, delta and a couple of others, my memory is super shit so i would need a release list...

It was a pretty weak year if something with the character models of shadow can enter my list...

Same strong points and weak points of the second one.

Sorry i'm never gonna call masterpiece a game with those character models.

Faces are "only" okay, but the rest of the game is so damn good that I never cared. Plus the actual armor and clothing are, once again, amazing.

Agree to disagree, never once i thought about the game looking amazing when i had my brief experience with it (thank god for epic store free games).

I played the game after many years when the graphic was already vastly surpassed.

But then again, i'm a notoriously hard cookie to crack.

It was an odd one. I always preferred the 'look' of rdr2 and horizon zero dawn.

KCD2 on the other hand has that RDR2 look and i dig it way more. I think the OG game might have been a bit too ambitious and just couldnt nail that look the first time. Lighting looks so much better in KCD2.

We need a public vote to switch every sony devs with ai

I need open worlds to look like this before i die...

The Witcher 3 version is so much more impressive. It perfectly captures the art style and makes it photorealistic.

Maybe thats the future. Everyone makes switch looking games in a year and then they have AI make them look photorealistic when running the game on your AI console.

I first played it around 2020, and it amazed me back then. It was the first game that made me feel like I was in actual wilderness. The forests were so well done. Granted, I am from around the area where the game takes place, so I know how it should look, and yes, they nailed it. Even now, replaying the first game, there are moments that give me goosebumps. When you are just riding your horse and there is a sunrise over the hill, it is so well made. A masterpiece in terms of environment. I agree that the characters are not the best, but that is also the case in the second game.

This looks pretty fucking photorealistic to me already...

Well if memory serves me right maybe it's the anti aliasing from that era ain't doing too many favors , maybe it's the color palette and artstyle, with lighting are not that consistent due to obvious reasons and such. Anyway it's just different matter of taste and me nitpickin stuff sometimes :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Yeah i don't know, the most realistic wilderness i ever experienced is probably rdr2 because their animal ecosystem gives the game a huge boost, kc forest looks fake to me because it is pretty barren...a real forest has animals all around you.

The kc games are way too sanitized for me, it should be gritty medieval but everything look too clean and aseptic for lack of better words.

Have you ever been to a real forest? Like an actual, big, ancient forest? I spent my childhood in an area just like the one depicted in KCD, and this is exactly how it looks. I have been to forests countless times, and you are lucky to see any animal at all. They do not really jump in front of you like in almost every video game ever made. You are extremely lucky to see something like a fox, a deer, or any animal for that matter. I have never been to the areas depicted in RDR2, so I cannot really say how realistic it is, but when it comes to forests, it is not even close. KCD is king.

lol just found my post from the 2021 DF Graphics GOTY thread. Wanted to see who won that year. it was ratchet, but they titled the video AMAZING YEAR which apparently rubbed me the wrong way.

lol amazing. Yes a year full of underwhelming cross gen games in amazing. These are the people in charge of dissecting graphics in this industry….. no wonder we are in such a shit state.

They actually brought up deathloop. Just shut down the channel already. They have jumped the shark.
My beef with them goes back years lol

This could yield interesting results if implemented properly
I hope more devs will take advantage of this type of interactivity.
Hopefully HL3 will satisfy people on both fronts of visuals and interactivity

this is no The Ascent but the art direction looks great
