Avatar: Fire and Ash | Official Trailer

I wish they didn't switch back and forth, because although it was jarring with Hobbit, I got used to it. The switching is what takes you out a little. The HFR with 3D is fantastic once you accept that it isn't 24 frames... which does take a little getting used to.

About what I'm expecting. I don't rewatch Avatar much, if at all, but damned if the IMAX 3D in theater experience isn't the best there is.

The N'avi stuff is getting real stale, I'm more into the human mechs and all that.
You can tell he was really choosing his words carefully. I wonder if it'll do more than the 2nd one. I remember when the 2nd one came out there were reports everywhere on the Internet about it underperforming then I guess the Hollywood machine kicked in and the narrative changed overnight and suddenly it was doing gangbusters /tinfoil hat off

Hopefully this will be the last one, honestly I think he should have stopped after the 1st one and went and made something good.

Ok tinfoil hat time again. This is a repeat of when 2 came out and all over the Internet there were articles about how it was underperforming then someone pulled some strings and every media outlet changed its tune and it did AMAZING! The fix is already in and it's not even out yet.

Avatar is a movie franchise that I find an enigma. I honestly can't understand its popularity. I don't hate the movies but they are outside of visuals they are kind of terrible.

The villains should almost be cackling and twirling their mustaches they are so poorly written.

James Cameron uses the story to service the visuals rather than telling an interesting story with characters that's have any depth.

Eh, I don't care much about the story.

I wish he would go even more wacky with it. I want blue cat girl mermaids, a giant kraken showing up, blue cat girl harpies, a world eating serpent, blue cat girl centaur things, really just more blue cat girl variations and big monsters and lots more mechs.

Someone needs to whisper "Battletech, battletech, the clans are coming!" into Cameron's ear so we can get more of that kinda shit.

I don't know, it's pretty wild already if you think of all the stuff like symbiosis and the living planet, the whole mind / meld / tunneling into Avatars. It's about to go bonkers I believe when the conflict somehow extends to future earth in Avatar 4 (if it happens, good chance though).

While it would be fun to see a tall mask wearing Na'vi having to navigate human structures, I'm not sure where that story would even go, other than as a Pocahantas type "put on display for the Queen" type thing. I'd much rather see some new threat forcing humans and Na'vi into an alliance and feature more space based stuff. Camerons keen eye for scientific based detail would have a spaceship obey newtonian physics and we might get a lot more Expanse style fights versus star wars (I know he had artificial gravity in Aliens but that wasn't his world).

I mean...the movie started slower than the 1st but ended up as the 3th top grossing movie in history with 2.3 billion bucks. How can you call a movie with a gross like that a flop?

I'm not saying it was a flop financially. I'm saying that it somehow miraculously recoverd after the slow start. Chalk it up to word of mouth aI guess despite me never hearing anyone talk about this franchise irl.

James Cameron is always like this. Even Titanic had a much slower start when you look at its final gross. The movie came out um October or November and its peak weekend was valentine's day in February. That just doesn't happen.

Your original message seemed to be saying that someone "pulled strings"? I think it's just like Tiago said, and Cameron films burn both bright and long. They aren't low earners at the beginning, as they have healthy debuts.... they just aren't front loaded like normal blockbusters. It has a lot to do with the lengths, Titanic, Avatar and Avatar the Way of Water were all very long films and had less showings per day.

Have tickets for 12/20, so very much looking forward to having my mind blown.

Tickets for this are selling like hot cakes around here. Just got some shitty seats for the 22.12. this morning for a buddy and me - and buying tickets for this showing was only possible for a few hours when I checked...

It's gonna be an event film again for sure. No matter the plot, I again expect it to be a sight to behold. Plan to see it at least 2-3 times in IMAX before the pull it off. No matter how much I like to see movies on my OLED, there is nothing like Avatar in IMAX.

So...a podunk town? Because I live in the 4th largest city in America those were just the 1st 4 cinemas that showed up on my fandango app
Your logic seems flawed, if it is a less populated "podunk" as you say town, there would be less viewers. Also, do you usually go see three hour movies at 11:15 pm or 10:45 pm, because those late times were what came up first in your search?

With me, I had to buy my tickets the day the went on sale, as all the decent (non front row) seats were bought within hours. All but the latest hours are sold out around here (San Fernando Valley, CA).

My saturday imax screening is half full. All right down the middle, as it common for advance sales. Tons of theater capacity for imax and other screens. The imax theater is actually the least comfortable and hardest to take pee breaks in, but that 3D imax is a must, at least for the first showing.

I'll have to check my theater. I wonder if basically all cg looks better at hfr than a mix of it like the hobbit. Iirc way of water just had select.scenes in hfr, right?
It does and doesn't. For us gamers, yeah probably. But it can slightly ruin the illusion of being cinematic for slower dramatic scenes. It basically can make it look like a play, live. So if they're on a set that isn't that convincing, average costume design, and then it looks extra real with HFR it can ruin the illusion and make it look more like actors on a stage.

For extra high quality productions like this though, I would rather it was HFR the entire time.

So from the reviews it seems like it's as expected. Cool visuals and the same recycled plot for a third time.
Wasn't there some story a few months ago about how his wife cried for 2 hours after watching it? lol

I think it's because it's a visual treat like basically nothing else in modern cinema. It almost feels more like a 3 hours long IMAX audiovisual experience than a proper movie lol.
But I think it's exactly because it's selling you the audivisual experience above everything else that people actually show up, it's one of the few movies that feels like you'll be missing a fundamental part of it if you don't watch it in theaters.

I'm man enough to say I cried watching The Way of Water in the theater, and then again at home months later. The whole interactive flashback that they had hit me, but that's likely because I have three boys that I love more than anything.

If Suzy Amos (sp?) cried, I expect there are some heart-tugging scenes similar to the one from The Way of Water.

Finally. I almost walked out of the first movie and won't even see the others on streaming. Cameron get back to making good shit.

i'll watch it, but i want to watch it in the cozyness of my futon. i want to be able to pause the movie then do other things. 3.15 hours, being stationary in a cinema theatre is not for me anymore. plus i can be in my blankie and play vidya games.

Got tickets for Saturday. Wasn't really a fan of Way of Water, even after multiple times watching it. The visuals are consistently great, at least that's going to be a treat whether or not the story holds up.
