Japan's New Language Locked PS5 Hasn't Made a Massive Difference to the Format's Domestic Fortunes

LectureMaster

Or is it just one of Adam's balls in my throat?

Reports suggest new PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino couldn't stand to see Sony's floundering status in its native Japan, and so rushed through approval of a cut-price language locked model in order to stimulate sales domestically.

Under previous management, the manufacturer had purportedly accepted its status in its home territory, and wasn't willing to fight tooth and nail with Nintendo to claw back market share.

Nishino, however – who's Japanese – felt differently, and introduced the new cut-price, language locked model on 21st November.

In the case of the standard Digital Edition model, it reduced the overall price of the hardware from ¥72,980 (~$473) to ¥55,000 (~$350), putting it at parity with the MSRP of the machine prior to its sharp increases in 2024.

But the impact, alongside a surging Switch 2, has been minimal so far.

According to Famitsu sales data, for the two weeks immediately after the new model's introduction, it sold a combined 36,983 and 35,786 units respectively – a decent increase on the months prior.

But in the magazine's latest report, it pegs total PS5 hardware sales at 18,912 units, slightly lower than the same period last year, when it sold 21,574 units. PS5 Pro was still relatively new at that time, but it only contributed 5,504 units to the total that particular week, so didn't have a meaningful impact.

In other words, what we're seeing is fairly static PS5 performance in Japan, despite the introduction of the much cheaper model.

Now it could be that without the language locked console, the numbers would be even worse this year. So, in that sense, Sony may have at least stemmed the bleeding.

But it's hard to see what else the company can do here.

Tentpole domestic titles like Resident Evil Requiem, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, and Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties – once exclusive to PlayStation by default due to hardware differences – are now beginning to ship in a competent format on the Switch 2, so Sony has lost that advantage.

Moreover, the bulky, stationary nature of the PS5 doesn't really appeal to the Japanese lifestyle. And the platform holder is lacking first-party brands which come anywhere close to touching the cultural relevance of releases like Mario and Pokémon.

Nishino, it seems, will keep trying. We know Sony is plotting a handheld of its own, likely to release alongside the PS6, which may prove popular in Japan.

But without any real exclusives of note, and with Japanese third-parties increasingly turning to Switch 2 as a viable release destination, it looks like the platform holder's got its work cut out.

One thing's for sure: price alone doesn't appear to be PlayStation's only problem in its native Japan.

I think it's clear Sony made the decision after and during titles like Uncharted and Last of us to reduce their Japanese presence with developers and focus on the west.

This paid off, there victorious against MS and the Xbox but now they are against pc and switch which combined is proving a much harder battle than a sloppy Microsoft.

They need the portable for Japan but I feel they COULD spread themselves too thin trying to support multiple platforms unless everything just plays on everything but then we have a series S but worse environment.

Next gen is going to be weird in so many ways. From pricing to content expectations.

By the way, I'm all for graphics regr using as long as frame rates are smooooooth

Correct

They've eliminated their competition in America and the UK

Now refocus on Japan (because I prefer Jap games)

Sony need

1. A handheld variant
2. Japanese exclusives

It can't be just a hand held variant that plays downgraded PS5/6 games. It's missing the point entirely. It needs dedidcated games, developers need to focus on a hand held experience. Going to be tough when the Switch audience is pretty massive.

The chase for ultimate graphics is over, the Japanese market is just a head of the rest of the world and course correcting.

The PS5 digital edition launched at 44,000 yen 5 years ago.
Today it is 55,000 yen.
Yes the price is reduced compared to the price increases they did, but it is still more expensive than when the thing came out. If it wasn't flying off the shelves back when it was cheaper, why would it now?

A handheld with its own library in these times? Forget it.

Sony can't support a separate handheld library.

Nintendo can't support a separate home console library.

Those days are over, games take too long to make now.

Travelling within Japan atm I can understand why Sony's market share in Japan is less than 10% of their sales for PS4 and PS5.

I think the previous management realised that and is just Nishino that is trying to save face, but their fate in Japan is sealed.

The handheld will be more popular in western markets.

but then we have a series S but worse environment.
Japanese do not masturbate to pixels like Westerners do, Switch is a proof of that. Price is also not a major issue, it almost never is.

1. Portability, whereas the Japanese spend a lot of time commuting to work or at school
2. Iconic IPs for the Japanese audience

Sony doesn't have any of the above.

Yes it can? Sony will never again support double platform, if Nintendo failed you would need to be insane to try.

People don't care about graphics anymore (and with the success of indies you could point out they are right). Handheld is portable, as your life gets busy you don't have 2 hour block in front of the TV. If you don't get it you don't - that's fine. I wouldn't be gaming if not for Steam Deck, I think on my PS5 in 2023 I played something like 30 hours total.

Because it's the digital model. A lot of Japanese people have complained that it's the digital only model, and complaining having to buy the disc drive as a separate purchase. If it was the disc drive model it would have sold significantly better.

But PlayStation hasn't made the best or smartest decisions this gen.

I don't really understand this ideia of 'handheld will help things up'.

Where this is coming from? Just because Nintendo Switch is a hybrid?
Nintendo would sell a ton in Japan regardless having a handheld console or not because of their first party games.

Sony was crazy popular in japan durning psx and ps2 times coz it had tons of games japanese gamers loved, many of them exclusively too, after that ninny started dominating for this very reason- they got games japanese players wanna play.
What japanese player is hyped to play ND's upcoming female blasian baldie? Likely some 0,0001% that are pervs and wear sailor moon outfits but beside that close to none :P
