OP, yeah, old-timer here as well and it's been an amazing year. I've constantly had more games to play than time to play. Backlog is growing!

Gamepass has been firing on all cylinders lately too, started mid last year but this year in particular was nuts with Silksong, Ninja Gaiden 4, Avowed, Oblivion, DOOM, Expedition 33, The Outer Worlds 2, COD BO7, Keeper.

I'm having a surprisingly good time playing Metroid Prime 4 as well right now, was down on it at first but I'm having fun. One of my kids finally fell in love with the IP too so thanks Nintendo for that 👍

The top this year was actually Oblivion for me, not expected but it's an old favorite which I just can't stop loving and now it got a crazy update. 9.5/10, blisters and all. I'm hoping Bethesda do more games like that. I want to play Morrowind but can't deal with the old visuals today.

Also, one of my all-time nostalgia favorites was revived this year too - The Last Ninja!

Finally, this was the year I stepped over the finish line and got 100% in Elden Ring 🏆🥳

Yea man the oblivion drop was a nice surprise despite some of it'd flaws I loved returning, I gotta actually go back and get my platinum haha but I loved it and was glued for days on it again those are the kind of things that make gaming awesome because like I said games 20 years old are old and I played them upon release so it's refreshing to go back.

I have Prime 4 ready to roll also, haven't cracked in yet so I'm looking forward to it.

As for Bethesda, dude Indiana Jones hits on so many levels... I honestly thjnk it deserves even more accolades because it is one of the best movie IP related games ever, I am working on the platinum there as well and they didn't slack for one second on that gem! But yea just loving it.
 
Gaming is great, we are constantly getting new games I want to play to the point I don't have the time to play them all. Between PSN and Steam I usually have like 30-35 games on my wishlist at all times
 
Revisiting the Master System these days. Having a blast !

Enjoying video-games after 35 years is simple if you don't fall into the trap of feeling you should play new stuff etc... Just play whatever you feel like is going to be fun, nobody cars if it is 10, 20 or 30 years old games.
 
I'm never out of good shit to play, I can tell you that.

Then again at the same time I can't help but notice how the lion share of my gaming time is increasingly being spent on alleged indie/AA titles, while the "big boys" in the industry are having less and less every year to offer to me.
I can't even remember the last time I felt compelled to spend money on, say, an Ubisoft or *Electronic Arts game.

To be honest the new Battlefield didn't look half bad this time, but I simply don't have the time to sit and play these big multiplayer games anymore.
Or more specifically I can't reliably spend the time playing them with the confidence that i won't suddenly get some work-related phone call forcing me to drop a game without a warning.
 
I feel like gaming has never been better cause besides new games, I can also get infinite amount of mods for Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 4, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. And there's definitely way more mods now compared to the past and more stable too. Extremely old games like RE1 to RE3 can still be played on emulators etc.

The only things I'll say past gaming were better in was actually truly owning the game and couch co op/split screen pvp being more of a thing. But the latter don't really matter to me anymore since all my friends and cousin are too busy or have moved away anyway.

I loved Indiana Jones! It was my GOTY last year, I definitely think it deserve more recognition. Troy Baker was amazing too doing the voice. As a big Indy movie fan it was an amazing playthrough.
Never 100-percented it though. Haven't played the DLC either. I should correct that!

Oblivion has it's flaws but for me it still take the top spot for me this year. A Metacritic 94 game getting a substantial remaster doesn't happen often.
 
Hell yeah. Im cleaning out a few backlogs before starting a big new game(either kcd2 or warhammer rogue trader). Right now Im trucking through Mp4, Wuchang and GoYotei.
 
We're at a point that if there was a video game "crash" and studio output was cut in half for a few years, there is so much on peoples' backlogs that I don't think it would be this huge problem*. Plus, people would start revisiting older titles that they haven't played in a while. I typically only replay games I really like, and will wait 2-4yrs to do that. For example, I just played through RE Village again in anticipation of RE9. Haven't touched that one since launch.

* Exception is for PS5 exclusives. The system is already severely lacking in comparison to prior generations.

Ah nice man and yea same, it's our family business so I can sorta carve out my time as I want and get home earlier so it helps. Yea when I'm working on platinums I just get locked in and it's such a fun thing, I love check list type stuff so it adds to my overall value of games.. But it keeps me fairly busy overall, couldn't be happier with it all!
 
I'm the same age as you OP, also been gaming since 1982. Unfortunately, I don't share your fervent optimism for modern stuff. For me modern gaming has been on decline since the 8th gen, overall. I do still have tons of stuff to play (when I can motivate myself to play video games versus other hobbies), but the majority of that is older games I've not played yet, rather than brand new stuff. I'm not saying that present day modern gaming is bad, I'm not a Luddite. I am saying that most of it simply doesn't appeal to my personal tastes as a long time video game player. So much AAA stuff is just shallow online multiplayer session crap that actively repels me. I'm not happy with Switch 2 era Nintendo thus far. There's some nice indie stuff but a lot of that is overly derivative (lots of cover bands). Remakes and remasters are through the roof lately. Eh, I think this industry needs a real shake up to wake up.

What's typically youre type of game?

So like for me what it is is the variety, glancing at my games played for instance a mix of games I've platinumed and played heres what all just has grabbed me

There is some modern stuff worth playing, I'm not saying it's all bad. But the stuff I want to play are more like outliers amongst all the noise. I'm also finding myself slowing down a lot on gaming lately in general. It's annoying that every new game has to be a serious life investment. Even an action game like Stellar Blade takes 23 hours to beat for the main campaign alone. Feels weird to complain that games are too long these days, but with full time job, full time responsibilities, and god forbid other hobbies outside video games, yeah that can be an issue. Then again, Steam gamer completion rates in 2025 remain consistently low across the platform, with empirical data indicating that only 10-35% of players complete the games they start, so maybe I'm just doing it wrong. Apparently you're supposed to buy lots of games, sample them for a few hours, then move on to the next shiny thing. But I'm glad you're my age and still loving the hobby in its modern format. Keep on gaming brother!
 
I am having a hard time getting through the games I want to play. I was wanting to jump back into Guild Wars or Guild Wars 2. I can't dedicate time to an MMO because it would take too much time away from other games. I have several titles I wanted to get to over the last year or two, but they will probably sit in the back log because catching up on those takes away time from new games. I do realize I can no longer dedicate 8 hours a day to gaming like I used too but even if I could, I would still have to problems finding enough time to play all of the games I want. I am suffering from too many choices this generation, not lack of them.
 
Yeah, things are pretty good, in major part thanks to indie and AA games. They are hard carrying the medium, it's where most of the fun and creativity lies nowadays. The good AAA games are extremely few and far between.

Additionally there is always the backlog to consider. I played Dark Messiah recently, a game that is 20 years old, and it still kicks ass and it's way better than most of the corporate driven AAA games we are getting.
