Video game developer Vince Zampella, whose studios have created several of the world's best-selling games, was killed Sunday afternoon in a crash on Southern California's Angeles Crest Highway, NBC4 Investigates has learned.

Zampella, an acclaimed figure in the video game industry, is the head of Respawn Entertainment. He is the former CEO video game developers Infinity Ward, the studio behind the successful Call of Duty franchise.

The single-car crash was reported at about 12:45 p.m. on the scenic road north of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains. The southbound car veered off the road, hit a concrete barrier and a passenger was ejected, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver was trapped in the ensuing car fire, the CHP said. The driver died at the scene and the passenger died at a hospital, authorities told NBC4 Investigates.

Details about why the car crashed off the road were not immediately available.

Zampella, 55, co-founded Chatsworth-based Respawn Entertainment in 2010. The studio was acquired by video game giant EA in 2017. Respawn Entertainment is best known for the video games Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends and STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order.

Zampella also led an EA studio team based in Playa Vista behind the Battlefield video game franchise.

NBCLA has reached out to Zampella's family for comment.

😭😭😭

Jesus life is so cruel. Just come off from revitalizing a franchise everyone thought was doomed. You're basically the top name of an entire genre of gaming. One of the most recognized people in all of gaming. Then you die at fucking 55 years old because of an accident.

I hope his loved ones find the strength to get through this. Thank you for the good times, Vince.

Damn rip .

But this smells like dangerous driving. Single car on a scenic road? Car caught on fire? Passenger ejected?

Probably going 100 on a 30.
Hes an automotive enthusiast. So in willing to bet it wasnt a civic.
So sad. Man is a gaming legend

Oh...that is awful. He was a very nice guy to deal with. Was always super positive about your work and took the time to thank the team too. Only interacted with him at infinity ward, but for someone who was making the best selling game of all time (even back then) he was down to earth and chill.

Awful that this happened*.

Designed Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, the game that solidified the model of what was to come with Call of Duty, and more recently helped pull Battlefield from near doom back to stardom.

He's left a mark on the industry that will never be forgotten. RIP.

This is horrible news on multiple levels.

Vince and his games gifted me many precious memories and Titanfall 2 brought back my love for FPS games.

This is a bit of a personal loss, ngl.

RIP, king.
