GTA 4 and Vice City with RTX Remix path tracing

  • RTX Remix once again demonstrates its potential with the latest update to the GTA IV mod released today.
  • This mod adds Path Tracing, which means a significant improvement in global illumination, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, and the behavior of materials with respect to lighting.
  • The difference is simply stunning in some areas, achieving results that rival current games visually.
  • Needless to say, the requirements are extremely demanding. An RTX 5090 was used in this video.
  • There are some details that still need improvement, such as water, materials, and some light sources. The weather is also somewhat irregular.
  • The mod's creators are still working on it, refining the lighting and improving the geometry and texturing.
  • Thanks to RTX Remix's Runtime, the graphics settings are fully adjustable, with the added possibility of implementing DLSS and Frame Generation.
  • RTX Remix is the future of modding in video games. It is a tool ahead of its time that will continue to bring us joy like this in the future.

GTA Vice City RTX Remix compatibility was made possible thanks to a custom RTX Remix runtime for the RAGE Engine created by Xoxor4d. The mod is now publicly available, and you can download it from here:

GTA4 is around the generational limit of where I would use RTX Remix. There's enough detail that the new lighting doesn't look out of place.

Going back to even older games like Vice City though creates an uncanny schism between the low poly geometry and the ultra realistic lighting. Sometimes it can look really good, like the cafe interiors or that reflective pool, but elsewhere it just looks ugly, like the beachfront shots where you can see how sparse the grass is. You'd basically need to re-do everything else to make it look coherent.

The mod also fucks a lot with the color grading by coating the game in a Mexican filter. The garish colors and the 'trails' effect of Vice City is what makes it instantly recognisable to me. But perhaps that's as much to do with this mod being applied to Vice City ported to the RAGE engine and not the original Vice City.

The Vice City one is a clear case of art style and intent vs arbitrary lighting. I'm not particularly impressed by RT anyway, but to me that's a definite downgrade and not just because it's mismatched with PS2 era textures and models.

Edit:
Watched more of the video, actual footage this time.
Not only do all of the shadows look too dark for a bright outside environment, but it can't even run at 4k without DLSS Performance, and even then it's 30fps without FG saving the day. This really isn't for me.

It's far from ready yet. I suggest you to wait
I started playing it with the 1.1.3 version. 14 hours in. Not had any big issues. Few texture LOD problems but nothing to ruin the experience. DLSS Balanced, 2x Frame Gen and Ultra GFX preset. Using Warcaco 4K texture pack. Not all textures are replaced but worth installing.

There's a lot of stuttering and frame drops. The performance is abysmal and I have a 4090 pair with a AMD's Ryzen 7 7800X3D cpu and it runs terrible, in fact the author of the mod has admitted in Discord that the mod still needs a lot of work in the performance department

So I am not saying you cant play at the moment, you actually can but its very unpleasant

Running a 5080, Ryzen 7 9800x3d, i get decent frame rates with frame gen. 120fps tops, drops to maybe 54 in the city in areas. Using the 2 core affinity .bat script in the install directory, that definitely improved performance. Sure i get the odd hitching but im having a great time playing it. Maybe not for everyone if they dont have great setup. Itll no doubt improve over time. Im not going to just stop playing and wait til its perfect. It;ll do for me. I get the gist. Looks so much better than vanilla. Using DLSS quality is where it drops to 40's
