That DQ theme music does it to me every time. No other franchise can make me feel the magic I felt when I played these games as a kid. I'm still slowly making my way through DQ2 HD but I will absolutely download the demo and get this on release.

I just hate how Nintendo has invented yet another obstacle to physical ownership that I have to evaluate when making a purchasing decision. Switch 2 is on key card and shit, PC is superior but is digital only and has no physical ownership. Does the game have a digital Switch 2 upgrade so I can at least own the game on a cartridge in a non-ideal state while still reaping the benefits of the better hardware? (In this case, no). Can I sacrifice fidelity in favor of ownership by just playing the Switch 1 card on the Switch 2, even though it costs the same?

Several times I've had this exact internal debate with myself, and only twice now has it resolved in a way where I ended up buying the game. Ironically, once was for Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake which I purchased on PC after going through the above flow chart. The second time was when I bought a used keycard copy of Bravely Default for $18.

Not sure where I'll land on this particular game. My gut says "Switch 1 cartridge" but my mind could be changed if the PC version has ultrawide (or a mod). This is maybe my least favorite Dragon Quest game, so I'm almost just in the "wait for a sale" part of the negotiation with myself.

Square Enix will release a demo for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined on January 7, the company announced.

Save data from the demo can be carried over to the full game, and all users who play the demo will receive the "Day Off Dress" costume for Maribel for use in the full game.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on February 5, 2026 worldwide. Read more about the game here here, and here.

It really was. I'm hoping some of the changes they've made (like making a bunch of content optional) address that because the story (once you get to it) is actually pretty good.
