Crazy numbers. I'm gonna try it out this weekend.

Didn't Riot try to cancel this? And now it's an instant sensation. These big publishers really don't know what they're doing.

Looks like something I'd like to try but not really viable for me at the moment, no PC. I'll need to wait for GamePad support + Steam Deck or inevitable console versions.

I really have to ask. where do these games ( and their audience ) come from ?

I mean, I consider my self a hardcore gamer, when I have time, I always have a second page open on neogaf or check some tech / gaming sides like videocardz etc.

I never heard of this shit, yet its more popular than 95% of the games that were released last year if not 100%.

How does this happen? even a word of mouth cant spread this fast :/

Minecraft and Minecraft YouTubers are extremely popular. Just not with the 40 year old boomers of NeoGAF.

The only people that make minecraft youtube videos are 40 year old boomers...what are you on about?
He means boomers on Neogaf. Not boomers in general. A lot of people on Neogaf get annoyed when there's an indie showcase with no AAA games, so I doubt a lot of them are in tune with the Minecraft community(I don't blame them lol) and stuff like this.

A lot of people were excited about this when it was first announced half an age ago. I'll be surprised if it maintains this over the years in EA, or if it does anywhere near Minecraft numbers every year.

I'm really interested to see how this develops. I was excited when it was announced 7something years ago, but because of its troubled development road I stopped getting my hopes up. My dream would be a 3D Terraria-like experience.

I always have felt that Minecraft has an amazing core that Mojang/Microsoft have simply sat on, and that the brilliant concept is never going to realize its potential under their watch. It reminds me a lot of Pokemon where the core game idea is so brilliant that it's always going to sell millions of copies, therefore the developer/publisher has very little incentive to improve upon it.

As someone that only played Minecraft for 15 min you could've fooled me if you told me this was Minecraft.

I would watch it...have a friend who's kid loves mincraft and I am always watching him play...the people he watches on twitch and youtube all look older (some grey streaking their beards etc) hence my comment.
Played a few hours tonight really liked it so far of course a lot of things missing but it's pretty polished so far. First two hours it seems pretty "Minecraft" clone with a few wrinkles. Crafting is more streamlined and the attack a defend style mechanics are a slight revision. Seems promising hope it continues to progress!!

If must be picking up steam I head about it from the kiddos this afternoon, "its just a better minecraft". Sounds like a youtube clickbait title :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Getting this for my son tomorrow. He's super hyped like most Minecraft kids.

I'll eagerly await a console release so we can play couch co op. This looks more my jam than Minecraft proper.

Valheim has long been my forever game I will "finish" by in next 10 years. Never was able to try Minecraft so Hytale looks so good to me.

Will wait for final release. Steam release. In 5 years or so.

I remember a friend telling me about it years ago. Kinda thought it is dead.
It was, Publisher closed the studio.

Then OG founders acquired rights back from Publisher with private founding.

I remember I was all in on 2014-2015 on Minecraft bandwagon with a friend and I was excited for Minecraft killer back then, lmao. So it was literally almost a decade ago.

I also forgot about it honestly.

Are they still developing that MMO based in the same universe as LoL? I'ts the only MMO I'm interested in after WoW.

Would also be sick if they'd end up creating an single player RPG, too. Their universe is really cool, but LoL is fucking terrible.

I don't play Minecraft and haven't followed this at all, but this looks very similar to Minecraft. How has this guy managed to create and release this? Is he going to get in shit for making a Minecraft clone?

It's Battlebit all over again.

Nah, I've been rooting for these guys for years ever since looking at the game as something for the kids to play years ago. Trouble is they've grown up now.

Have put about five hours into it.

Great game. Only a foundation at the moment, but it will obviously be a huge success. Combat is better. Like the lighting. Sound design is brilliant.

It's supposedly still being worked on, but years away.

The most popular one I can think of, Dream, is like 22. How many Minecraft threads do you see around here? How many Hytale threads do you see? This game is doing Palworld / Wukong numbers.
Yeah, My kids used to love watching Minecraft YouTubers until they were about 10. YouTubers themselves in general ranged from teens to early-mid 20s.

There's what NeoGAF and gaming forums like, and then there's social media.

Like Gen Z, (18-29 age range) keeps up with games like Minecraft, Undertale, Deltarune, Hollow Knight, Terraria, etc. These games were popular in the 2010s and as such carry childhood memories for them if they were playing those games around that time. Childhood exposure to and nostalgia for these types of indies means that they're the type to prop up newer indies like Schedule 1, PEAK, RV there yet, Cult of the Lamb, Deep Rock Galactic, Balatro etc etc etc. You see them on Twitter, Youtube, Discord, Tiktok etc.

NeoGAF is more Gen X and Millennial. Over here people like the retro games from their childhood more and tend to follow more legacy IP, like God of War, Resident Evil, Assassin's creed, Elder Scrolls, Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, etc. 90s and 2000s games, 90s and 2000s developers. When you were around for the early internet you tend to stick with the older online forums, including GAF, Gamefaqs, Reddit, aforementioned Videocardz, etc.

As such, you're not gonna hear about the brand new trendy indie sensation on GAF as much more as you are likely to hear about Druckmann's new game. Which is how hype for games like these slide under the radar until all of a sudden they get 5 million players on Steam and dominate the charts. It was really funny to see half of the posts in the Silksong Steam Records thread talk about how they've never heard of that game before.

Gaming's a very big hobby after all.

I'd heard of hytale a couple of times and found it quite interesting considering Minecraft has a lot of stuff that could be improved upon. from 2023-2024 i was just hearing shitty news about the development of the game and assumed that it was basically either dead or cancelled.
So it's still really shocking to me that it came out to rave reviews and high playercounts nonetheless. Even my Minecraft elitist friend told me it was great. I'm very glad to see a development hell game actually end up turning out good instead of being garbage like many games with overlong dev cycles tend to be.

Thanks for mentioning this. I almost bought it for my kid. He would have been so disappointed if I hyped it up and he couldn't really play it.

how the fuck is steams refund policy not ok?>
They didnt say that steam "is not okay"...just saying Hytale is better. Its 2h vs 4h. Good stuff! But to be honest...i have never ever refunded a game. Usually I know very well what I am buying.

Their site says it needs kernel 6.15 to run on Linux. My question: Has anybody tried to run it on an older kernel? I am stuck on 6.8 for now.

Gaming's a very big hobby after all.
I think this is something that's not repeated enough, and I hope one day gamers come to the same realization that book readers have already come to.

It often feels like too many online are fighting each other for gaming to be just one thing, when it's already too many things to count.

What a bizarre article

PCGamer's article quality has declined a lot in recent years.
Just avoid their nonsense.
Don't just read headlines. This is directly from the developer's site, which PC Gamer's article linked to:

Hytale Refund Policy:
  • We allow refunding your Early Access game editions at any time before early access begins on January 13, 2026. After early access is released, you have 14 days after release and having less than 4 hours of playtime.
  • If your purchase is made after the early access launch, you have 14 days after purchase and less than 4 hours of playtime to request a refund.
And they posted a long list of refundable payment methods:

how the fuck is steams refund policy not ok?>
I've never had a problem. In fact, I really like their return policy.
Saying "Their refund policy is better than Steam's" is not saying "Steam's refund policy is not ok/bad".

I prefer to play games myself instead of watching a bunch of twats narrating them.

Streamers remind me of football talkshows.

So it's a clone with adjustments?
