I was reading an article on the Oscar nominations about who got snubbed or who got unexpectedly nominated.

There's a demographic in the motion picture academy affectionately known as "steak-eaters," men in the autumn of their years who appreciate a good Dad Movie centered on old(ish) guys who most definitely know best. With membership broadening, this demo has lost a bit of its influence over the years. But the dudes can take a victory lap today, celebrating the nomination of Joseph Kosinski's swaggering, vroom-vroom sports movie.


What the hell is wrong with these movie critics and their hate for regular folks....
 
16 (!!) nominations for Sinners. Looks like every eligible category except Best Actress. Oh brother. Why not 17?

Anyway, OBAA and Marty Supreme are my picks for the year.

Sad to see No Other Choice with zero noms. Should get one for cinematography.

No anime nominated for animated feature despite major success for Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man. Kind of criminal to put Elio on there but not those.

I didnt see sinners but wow what a resounding success it has been.

Idk if it'll get best picture but I think cooler is def getting it for directing. MBJ might cinch a win.

A lot of these movies I didnt see tbh. I still gotta watch F1

One Battle After Another was such a bad movie ... Couldn't make its mind up whether it was a serious movie or a satire of crazy terrorists ... Awful misleading trailers that made Leo del Caprio's character look like the hero of an action movie when in the movie he was a bumbling weed smoking fool who chased his daughter for most of the movie for no avail. The bad guys were all white and most of them were caricatures of racists and fascists whereas all the non white characters were heroes, even the indian guy who at one point delivered the daughter to her captors but ultimately redeemed itself.

OBAA was well-shot and directed, but the movie itself, the plot and all the characters, is absolute trash. Hated it.

Don't know about slow year - more like the culmination of a really weird 10 years or so.

Suffice to say that if Sinners had been released at the same time as From Dusk Till Dawn, in 1996, it would have got exactly as many Oscar nominations as From Dusk Till Dawn did.

Honestly the terrible musical scene in the middle of sinners should disqualify the movie, completely ruined the vibe of the movie for me.

We all know why Sinners got so many nominations, there is no need for elaborate speculation.
 
Sinners should win for "Most OK Movie". It's fine. The kind of movie you never think about until you see it mentioned and then you think "Oh yeah, I saw that." Zero impact.

The One Battle After Another trailers constantly showed Leo's character bumbling about, not remembering the password to find his daughter's whereabouts because he was too stoned. Not sure how you missed that.

Sinners is amazing and blows away From Dusk Til Dawn. Don't really get the comparisons anyway outside of the obvious surface level stuff. From Dusk Til Dawn was a fun B-movie that subverted expectations in an entertaining way. Sinners is a borderline masterpiece.

It's partly that but the type of film that is up for tons of awards has shifted a bit in recent years to include a lot of more blockbuster films.

And the first 2/3rds IMO is really good and has some unique artsy shit that Hollywood loves. Definitely isn't just a From Dusk til Dawn rip-off as people keep saying.

I thought the last third was kind of laughable though but there's also pretty decent sized chunks of OBAA that are bad.

in the end these are awards for Hollywood not for us so even stuff like Coogler getting such a "first dollar gross" deal can influence voting.

Going to agree here, saw Sinners in theaters due to all the hype and it was one of the most boring, mediocre, predictable & not scary in any way films I've ever seen. This whole list is why I don't bother with most modern films.

Agreed on F1. Top Gun was much better, that should have gotten the nom when it was out.

But lol at calling Sinners "one of the most mediocre films in years". Really now?

I don't understand the love for Marty Supreme. To me it was massively overlong and directionless, briefly touching on myriad themes (American post-war entitlement; the exploitative relationship between money and talent, etc) without exploring them in any way or letting them form into the connective tissue the film desperately lacked. It's very much a 'might have worked if it hadn't also done this' type of film, where its parts are so disconnected from each other that they often end up clashing and diminishing each other. The whole thing being a loosely connected sequence of vignettes, for instance, might have been able to coast through on momentum as a fun if meaningless time had the film not been two-and-a-sodding-half hours long, where ninety minutes would have sufficed quite comfortably. The ping pong was entirely abandoned for the middle act, which wouldn't necessarily have been a problem had it not been the basis for the finale. Timothee Chalamet is good in it and carries the film as far as he can, but it's certainly not such an amazing or deep performance that there wasn't a hard limit on how far that is, particularly since the character is not especially deep. For a character so fiercely determined and ambitious, the sentimental ending also struck completely the wrong note. I can see why the Oscars might pick up on it, but the audience scores I've seen are positive as well and it just didn't do anything for me at all.

I don't think the ending is that sentimental. It's the realization that all of his hopes and dreams are now crushed under the weight of taking responsibility for his messy, self-centered actions. After taking this journey with him to achieve his dreams by any means necessary with every ounce of spirit he has, it's kind of a downer, but a necessary coming of age moment.

Of the Best Picture nominees I've just got The Secret Agent to check out. That comes out over here next month so I'll see it then.

I'd like Marty Supreme to win Best Picture. But I can see One Battle After Another winning it, which is fine with me since I thought it was great. A bit surprising to see F1 get nominated. I liked it but wouldn't have had it on that level. I guess they're maybe wanting to have more films in that category that have a wider appeal, which is part of why the Best Picture category now has 10 nominees, but I feel like Sinners walks that line well of being well made but also having a broad appeal.

For Best Director I assume that goes whichever way Best Picture will, so probably PTA. But I could also see Safdie winning it, which would be quite something since I when the Safdies decided to go their seperate ways it seemed like most people expected Benny to the the one to stand out.

Chalamet for Best Actor. DiCaprio is also always going to be a contender for that but while I thought he was great in it I preferred Chalamet's performance. I think Ethan Hawke could be a dark horse for that one too.

Jessie Buckley for Best Actress, although I've still to see If I Had Legs I'd Kick You and I've heard Rose Byrne is great in that. Renate Reinsve was fantastic too.

Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Best Supporting Actress. Probably harder for her to win it since it's not an English language film but she's great in it.

Stellan Skarsgard for Best Supporting Actor. Again, it's maybe trickier to win it for a performance that's mostly in another language but him having a higher profile than Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas might put him in a better position than her.

The simplicity of Blue Moon's story, where it's just people talking rather than featuring big set pieces like OBAA or Sinners could make it good shout for Original Screenplay. Kind of interesting that Marty Supreme is nominated for Best Original Screenplay whereas OBAA is Adapted when both are loosely based off of books. I wonder what the cut off is for when it goes from adapted to original.

I would guess that Frankenstein will do well with the Production Design and Costumes. But Marty Supreme did a great job of replicating the era it takes place in. It's maybe just not as grand as the style Frankenstein goes for.

I was initially surprised to see It Was Just an Accident listed as the French submission for International Feature but obviously with how that film was made it makes sense that the Iranian government isn't going to be the ones to push it.I've still to see that but I'm hoping to soon.

Is that the War of the Worlds with Ice Cube sat at a desk? History will not judge this year's Oscars kindly for passing that one over.

Im surprised Wicked For Good didn't get anything, since the previous one got a few nominations. It was a decent film.

Having just seen it a few days ago, it really is a pity that No Other Choice didn't get anything. For me it's one of the most outstanding films of this past year. I've not seen all of the films in the International Feature category and it does seem like it's a strong year for it this year. But I'd have liked to have seen it get a nomination for that and Cinematography at least.
