Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Nah, im talking about the grainyness of the picture. Its too noisy, especially the effects
Maybe i need to watch it on the big screen, small screens always tend to improve the iq.

Even fable look pristine in the tablet and that one was much worse quality :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

What do we think fellas??
Really looking forward to the combat in this one. Graphics are solid enough, but I'm seeing a lot of pixelation artifacts and graininess throughout the trailer. With all of the particles and effects they're using in the game, image quality might end up being pretty poor.

I just hope the control scheme is not as complicated as someone said, i heard that you have palm strikes on r3 and l3, and if you use these often, those buttons are faaar from ideal.

Captured on PS5 Pro. PSSR cant handle certain particle effects.

DLSS should handle them better on PC. Still, very impressive showing on consoles. The 1GB source trailer is pristine.

Here are couple of gifs showing the different lighting conditions that show up late in the game in Mafia. yes, golden hour lighting looks great in every game, but i really like the new volumetric effects. Also, this is perhaps the first UE5 open world game with a dense forest. And it looks really good. Shame how they only briefly take you for a short mission.

Looks better than most western dev studio games, including most ps5 exclusives lool :D
I think most western devs have delivered great graphics this gen. Sony studios are the exception, not the norm. What most western studios havent done is produce great next gen gameplay. Or great gameplay in general.

Bluepoint started the gen out strong with demon souls, insomniac followed with a pretty decent Ratchet game though they did take a step back with spiderman 2. Asobo studios made Flight Sim in 2021 and Plague's tale in 2022, both stunners. Cyberpunk, Callisto and HFW were cross gen but they all looked absolutely insane. Respawn did a great job with jedi survivor, performance notwithstanding. Remedy with Alan Wake 2, Massive with Avatar, Teyon with Robocop, Ninja Theory with HB2, Bloober with SH2, and plenty more since.

What this game is doing is showing Western devs that you can do more than just DLC feeling sequels or Games with safe last gen ideas. They have ambition simply missing from Western studios. People are hating on it because its trying to do so many different things but since when is variety a bad thing? I swear most open world games are a 100 hours long nowadays and after the first 10 hours you are literally repeating content 10 time over. id rather fly a dragon than play some dumb card game every fucking western studio insists on adding in their dumb game.

Bunch of screenshots of Fable have been uploaded to Steam, far too much post-process (thankfully I'm playing on PC) but the game is gorgeous in my opinion:

FINALLY! GOD EXIST!

That looks like fun tech, and the trailer with that song is charming in a non-Japanese Yakuza game way lol

I gotta wonder how some of those players moves work in practice. Like being able to grab an NPC's leg vs head, and how it recognizes that you're going for a killing blow when an enemy's on the ground like at :54s

Fun Fact about FF7 Remake. To this day some of the skyboxes used are the wrong ones for the sector you are in. This was never corrected except via modding.

We got 2 whole official cheat patches though.

looking at the main thread, you might be right on the money. gamers have in the past and continue to reward mediocrity.
Oh yea it happens every time. I think half of gaf would genuinely prefer UE3 games to UE5 games, these people will be happy with PS3 level graphics if they don't have any occasional stuttering or lumen fizz

Speaking of UE5 being trash, I must say Mafia ended strong. Lots of beautiful looking areas towards the end. I still think it has that cross gen feel to it because it only looks next gen like 50% of the time, but when it looks next gen, it looks next gen. The game is still very simple and plays like a ps2 game so dont go in expecting great gameplay. Only slightly better than Alan Wake 2 and Hellblade 2. But the story does pick up half way through and ends strong.

I was reading Peter Jackson's explanation of why he hasnt made any movies in the last 12 years, and he said his cinematographer was the main reason why the movies looked so good, and he doesnt want to work with anyone else. Part of why Mafia looks amazing at one point, and exceedingly average another is because the lighting just doesnt work. I understand its tough to light an open world game at all times, but there are a lot of interiors and vistas that just look dated. A little more work couldve made it look literally the best looking game last year. My guess is that its a budget issue than a talent one because there are so many times where the cinematography in this game is absolutely top notch. Both in cutscenes and during gameplay.

Yeah, Mafia is obviously uneven but I was impressed by it most of the time.

It's all done with mouse and a couple of buttons, but i use a steam control scheme to use the controller so i swing with the sticks and use the buttons to kick, grab etc, it is less precise than M+K but good enough.

There is a free demo on steam but it's a very early version.

From the developer's POV, they probably want to be able to port it to Switch 2 day 1, and the existing UE4 asset/dev pipeline probably allows them to have the game out by 2027, starting from scratch or shifting engines will probably have added another year or two more.

UE5 development should be quicker too since you have more and better tools at your disposal. They could make a product thats both more efficient and effective.

Lumen alone could be a good time saver (not that they have to use it or cant develop their own RT solution, but that also takes time). No matter what some people say "UE5 optimization > UE4 optimization" so itd be easier to run on all platforms including Switch 2, in addition to scaling and looking much better everywhere else.

UE5 is just an all-around improved UE4 and there is no situation where the obsolete is a better choice, to start developing a new UE4 project in ~2024 as a AAA budget game is embarassing and indicative that they dont care about pushing quality. Low effort game incoming tech-wise.

It's what the gamers want bro, just look at this thread. It does amaze me this is a gaming enthusiast forum sometimes

Looks sooooo much like Hogwarts.

Not a bad thing at all quite frankly.

Both riffing off the "Ye Ol' England" fantasy aesthetic I guess.

Outside of this thread and a handful of others, it really isn't. Enthusiast in name only.
Yea I know, outside this thread you can't even talk about upscalers and the positives and negatives of each solution without it erupting into shit flinging tribalism. It's hard to just be enthusiastic about graphical tech on Gaf because it always, and i mean always descends into system wars. It's crazy too because it's pretty much always been this way, but back then we we're dumb teens with egos, now we're in our 30s and 40s and still screaming about who's toy is betterer. It just shows some people only keep up on tech and graphic solutions etc only to brag and one up their perceived "rivals" and not out of the love for the craft

Ff7's last psrt is going to use ue4. I swear they are the laziest developers of all time.
I imagine at some point their plan is to release a "FF7: Remake Retrograde JXF;Heartdreams" version, which is just the three games stitched together into one title, backporting the latest models, textures, and such. Doing that within one version of the same engine would be a lot easier than if they swapped to different versions, or different engines.
