Marathon Releases March 5 '26 - $39.99

I am indeed doing the OT.

Hopefully the CCU thread diverts the retards away and we can discuss the game in peace.

The only people preordering the game are the ones who are sold on the game after playing the recent tests and did so when they went live.

See how the test lands, its certainly up in the air but i don't think it will out right bomb. The 7 people on gaf that have actually played it are all booked on the hype train.

I see that you said steam will carry this game. Why is that?
Because is an extraction shooter and look to arcraiders numbers on PC and consoles.

I saw this, but these are 1080p secreenshots. Thats not what i call high quality :)
Yeah you're right, my bad. I don't know why they're uploading these assets in 1080p only. However, I have some 4K shots from the cinematic announce trailer that seem to no longer be available on the press room page. Take a look. I only have a 1440p display so I don't know how good they'll look on your end, but hey I tried.

I'd imagine if it gets too bad someone will put their foot down, I mean, it's an OT after all. People should be allowed to discuss the game in peace, lol.

Nice I snagged one for my desktop. Luckily I'm 1440p as well :messenger_beaming:

How large is each environment?
The size depends on the map, but large

Is there plenty of exploration?
Yes, the game is mostly about exploring to find loot and solve puzzles occasionally shooting player or CPU enemies until it's time to extract in a specific location to keep completing missions to upgrade and unlock more stuff. So you spend a good chunk of the time exploring.

when is the beta?
During a weekend soon before the release, during February. I'd bet 2-3 weeks before release, pretty likely February 20-22.

It won't be a beta, but instead a free weekend before release open of the final game to all players in the world in all platforms.

I hope they doing the beta 2-3 weeks before launch so they can still tweak things before release, but its most likely the last weekend before release

Not massive. They are more like several PVP spaces stitched together with some space in-between. Plenty of spaces to explore.

Bigger isn't always better
There's also definitely way less players on the maps than ARC. Which I like, because if you can win 2/3 fights with a full squad, you probably go home with the biggest prizes.

ARC sometimes feels like there's no end to the players.
'Lets explore this abandoned building. Oh wait, there's a fucking massive dance party in here with 7 people all running around and shouting "don't shoot"'

The GOAT extraction song is still...

That said, I don't really value music in an extraction game.

I must disagree, the BEST extraction music in any game is in Helldivers II:

I know HD2 is nothing like Marathon or Arc Raiders, but technically you do "extract" in HD2, so...... 😁

Though, they did / do play that music so much that I'm still a bit numb to it.

The Game will be dead in 6 months.

I don't believe that.

Marathon won't be a game for me, but it is a Bungie game so it will at least play decent, and it will have a loyal following. I don't think it will do bonkers good but I do think it will sell well enough to survive for many years.

The big question is how bad will the monetization be? Again, it is a Bungie game...

Btw do the classes/shells have different amounts of health?
On the Escape Will Make Me Pod podcast, the hosts said the Runners have different base stats. It was in reference to Recon being bad "mid fight". I assume that means they'll play with the HP for each character. Trying to find the Runner screen that shows all the stats though...

This page shows different stats for each runner, but doesn't seem to show HP. Unless I missed it. Might be the same for everybody.

40 bucks?

DOA

F2P in months to stand a chance.
The most successful extraction shooter-ish games like Tarkov, Helldivers 2, Arc Raiders or even The Division 1 & 2 being paid games show you're totally wrong.

Very likely will be like Helldivers 2:
  • Plenty of totally free post launch content and features for all players including evolving and expanding story, new maps, new weapons, new enemies, new characters, new mods, new augmentations, new factions, new customizables, maybe in the future eventually new game modes too etc
  • No pay to win, players of your level will have the same gameplay stuff than you
  • No FOMO: the battle pass/warbond/whatever they call them won't expire or be vaulted
  • No paid expansions
  • All the stuff you can buy with real money can also be unlocked/looted for free by grinding at a not too greedy pace
  • Monetization focused on battle pass/warbond/whatever they call it and cosmetics (in this case very likely weapons/mods/augmentations you can loot, character and weapon skins, weapon charms and stickers, etc
Destiny 2 was a game designed as paid game with expansions that later moved to F2P, which implies many monetization and game design issues. Marathon has been designed from scratch as a modern GaaS having had access to Helldivers 2 data and basically GaaS data from all GaaS that ever have been available on PS.

So the monetization should be pretty optimized

If i remember correctly the beta had a similar bp system to helldivers

Battlepass
Ah, I see.

There's only a "paid" one that can be bought with both real money or a currency you can get in-game by grinding like in let's say Helldivers 2? Or they have a free and paid tiers like in let's say Street Fighter 6?

Well, I assume that since it was a beta it didn't have option to pay.

If anyone who purchased the collector edition is willing to sell the green worm separately, I'm interested.
Aldo I wonder if an art book was postponed because it contained some of the art that was plagiarised.

In Helldivers you can earn the currency to buy the battlepasses in game for free while playing. Does Marathon have in-game currency you can find during matches?
