College Football Thread - "Whoa, Nellie"

Was seeing some hate on NIL, but reality is college football is better than ever really as far as play on the field. Players staying longer, graduation rates going up. Also NIL has helped with distribution of talent.

I agree with this. We've got parity like we've never seen.

Players staying longer, yes, but to the point where they are not even in school. Players like Carson Beck hasn't been in a classroom in two years. Talent is being distributed to the larger schools and robbing the smaller who don't have the money to compete. Couple all that with yearly shifting of 40+ players on and off rosters and multiple lawsuits because there is structure to any of this.

To me, none of this is what college football has ever been about. I'm not against players being able to make some money, but I just don't think this is going to be sustainable longer term.

Question is now do the richest fan bases who are willing to donate the most just buy the best teams every year?

Do we need a salary cap at some point?

Lets take IU for example, we have the largest living alum base in the US, is it fair for smaller schools now?

Not football, but related. Alabama basketball player allowed to return to the team by a judge after signing a NBA contract and losing his eligibility. Supposedly (not sure if true) the judge is an Alabama athletics donor. Confirmed true

I am glad he is coming out and showing what has been going on behind closed doors. We have always known but providing detail is eye opening how much pressure they put on the players. Ole Miss pissing and moaning about Lane Kiffin and then they got exposed. This might cost them a lot more in court due to tortious interference with a contract. I hope some of these coaches and schools start getting hit pretty hard in the courts to slow this stuff down. I doubt it though since so many of them are guilty of doing the same thing.

Yeah, the hypocrisy of college athletics is truly amazing. Very sad to see what has happened to something a lot of us grew up loving. I knew this was going to happen once money started changing hands. My fear is that is that it is too far down the rabbit hole to ever even barely resemble what it once was.

Indiana wasn't even top ten.

Totally good with more structure but to act like it's ruined college football think is just wrong as far as the actual product and distribution of talent. All better

I mean moving forward, they cleaned up in the transfer portal, well for IU anyhow

I know they spent way more money this time than ever before

The NCAA *can* get control of it. The question is, will they? They don't seem to be a very ... consistent, let's say, organization. To me, anyway. And inconsistency is what's going to make all of this be a sh tshow.

We are now at the point where anything the NCAA can control is challenged in court. In fact, court rulings are what sent us down this path in the first place. I think it is only going to get worse.

Courts, as a rule, have really overstepped their boundaries. When a ruling body is in place, its ruling--unless it can be shown to be overtly inconsistent with the body's rules--should stand. But, yeah -- that time has passed.

EDIT: And the NCAA has been shown to be toothless for a long time now.

Really bad when donor/boosters are also the court judges ruling favorably for the school they donate to. Suddenly universities and colleges that have law schools have a significant edge.

Well, the big state universities -- many of the jackasses in the state house are alumni from that university (UGA here) so that school tends to get treated really well. I could see in places like Alabama that MANY of the movers and shakers are from Bama. Is it fair? Nope. Is it just the way it is? Yep.
 
I think they do need a commissioner I think Saban would do it if asked, but none of the NCAA board want to give up power or perks. the NCAA is toothless. It only sanctions teams that self report. There is no real investigation and they have less money than the schools. The SEC and Big 10 could go form their own conference and leave the NCAA. It is fairly useless.

I almost expect that kind of thing at the legislative level, but not judicial. A Bama booster/judge should not be forcing the NCAA to allow an NBA G league player who hasn't played in college since 2023 to return to the Bama basketball team in 2026. We are talking overreach at the minimum alongside a massive conflict of interest.

Man, I was there and we are were like what the heck just happened? Then our offense was stuck in neutral in the red zone. Fortunately, neither issue was a foreshadowing of trouble to follow.

Btw, that Old Dominion QB is at Wisconsin now. We don't play Wisconsin this season but I'll be interested to see how he fares in a full season of B1G play.

As a ND fan, I feel pretty confident in putting us at #1. ND fans are absolutely insufferable, and I know since I live near the epicenter of ND land.

I'll never forget the Charlie Weis days, and how the fans talked about and treated him. Horrible people, I swear.

Edit: And I'll even add, I don't own any Notre Dame memorabilia. No shirts, hats, posters, nothing. I don't want people out in the wild to know I'm a fan 🤣
