A lot has said about the leadership and I don't disagree with most of it. How people could be genuinely excited for any future offerings from them after the last two generations I don't know, each is own i guess.
Some of the worst culprits away from those actually being paid to be in charge of all this, are the media . I despise a fair number of them, it takes a certain level of arrogance and selfishness to be so obvious as a corporate lackey to do what they have done over the years.
A underperforming brand they supposedly are fans of yet they can barely attempt to be the least bit critical or objective because they get invited to game launches, events etc.
Decent viewerships (glad to hear some are losing that lately) to showcase honest opinion and tell these executives that things could be better and improve. But no, double down because they were nice at an event for yet another racing game or even more hardware.
How anyone can support these twats is beyond me.

The only one that surely is celebrating after that cursed deal to this day is Bobby Kotick, man made it out like a bandit, he knew exactly when to sell before everything going downNot selling hardware. Console wars is so much fun , its also the life blood of console and gaming industry the fan war that is why I love exclusives. This made the 80's to early 2000 gaming great because all are competiting and have exclusives. That is why its dissapointing that MS xbox did not even lift a finger to compete even through xbox have allot of great development team and great games which they could have made xbox exclusive to make xbox enticing. And gamepass hurts even there own developers.

It's their own fault. For all that money they have had, for all the "feedback" and the "learning" , they haven't learned a fucking thing.
If they put as much effort into quality and along with it consistency as much as they have with using the press and stench pit social media termites to shill for them, they would have been so much better off.

The brand is dead and resurrecting it as a expensive PC in a console form factor won't do shit when their most loyal fans will get a heart attack when they find out how much that thing will cost. It was already going to be expensive and now with the price of PC components exploding it may double in price compared to previous estimates.

Where? Their SW and service revenue is down with CoD, BF6, Arc, all f2p games on their platform, massive price hikes, PS5 releases and holiday season promotions (including, say, gamepads) glued together. It's their first holiday season with so many revenue streams at once. If anything, it's truly a Biblical disaster.

If they give up on hardware then they will just be another third party company. Sure they could potentially make more money that way, but no one will ever care about the brand the same way that they did before, it will just be another EA or Tencent, a company that makes a lot of money but no one would give a fuck if it disappeared from the face of the earth tomorrow.

It's not the simple because the hardware is where most of their game pass money comes in from and they do still sell games on there which brings in more revenue. If they get rid of the the hardware then were just talking about shrinking the division as a whole at that point. Revenue will drop from what it once was and never get back to that high again.

Impairment charges? Reads like Microsoft's business executives finally realised that Call of Duty doesn't just magically print money unless the game is actually decent. To deliver, it takes time, money, and talent - and Microsoft has never understand that last part. That was what the OG Xbox team brought to the entire endeavour: creative people with a vision. Then the suits took over and ran the whole fucking thing into the ground by treating Xbox like Excel and wondering where all the money disappeared to. Reading these numbers, whatever hardware plans they might still have for next-gen are going to be either more expensive than I've thought up until this point, or, so fucking miniscule as to basically be a non-console. USD$2k shelf price, with nice fat profit margins, or a 100k initial run for hardware with a much smaller profit. Only sold via the Microsoft store, no pack ins, no free Game Pass voucher, controller sold separately.
Their hardware evaporating without PR spin tells me that it is ultimately intentional. I'd continue to be they're cutting their losses on the XSX generation because it takes too much of a loss per hardware unit for their business as a whole to hit their profit margin targets. (Read: they can't hit 30% profit margin with USD$3B revenue, so they're dropping to $1B revenue by letting their hardware die off and doubling down on ABK where they can get much closer to their targets). Short term spreadsheet thinking to fuel Nadella's all-in on AI. They're gonna burn Xbox so fucking Copilot can run for another year before shareholders force Nadella to pull the plug and go back to actually making things people want. And by then, it'll be too late - no one will want Xbox anymore because they gutted it and left it to die. Their USD$80B investments will be for literally nothing, and they'll kill it off like Windows Phone and the Xune and not give two shits about it.

Real fans have cared about the Xbox brand more than the shills that shouted us down when Phil kept spinning his BS and Xbox anywhere became a thing. They wanted Xbox to mean everything but the console. Let them reap what they have sown. Xbox will be "anywhere" but an actual Xbox console and this is what they were trying to sell us as the master plan to "beat Sony." It actually pisses me off when I think about it and I hardly ever take anything serious about this hobby.
