jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

A new version is coming! Current version owners will keep access and can obtain the new version at no extra cost.
To our FINAL FANTASY VII community,

We will be releasing a new version of FINAL FANTASY VII on Steam.

Following the launch of this new version, the current version will be renamed FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition.

Availability of Versions

  • When the new version launches, FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition will no longer be available for purchase on the Steam Store.
  • Existing owners will continue to have access to FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition in their library.
  • The new version will be listed on the Steam Store as FINAL FANTASY VII.
Access for Existing Owners

  • All players who already own the 2013 Edition are eligible to access the new version at no additional cost.
  • Both versions will remain accessible in the owner's Steam Library once the new version is released.
Save Data Information

  • Save data will not be compatible between the two versions.
  • 2013 Edition saves will only work with the 2013 Edition.
  • New version saves will only work with the new version.

Interesting. I wonder what "improved gameplay experience" entails. At least they are keeping the 2013 release separate so as not to break the mods.

Why tho. The game hasn't had a CCU above 1k for some time save for a blip when Remake and Rebirth were released. Sales obvs can't be much.

And if you are giving it for free to 2013 owners, why not just update it.

Edit: Oh didn't see the save game data isn't compatible. Weird.

2013 version is on sale, I almost grabbed it the other day (I picked up FFX and FFXII). Can't help but notice that there is a blaring warning about requiring a Squenix account to play the 2013 version... so maybe they are exorcising that particular demon?

I might just grab it just in case. No clue what the state of mods are for this game in current year and if the save file format is breaking seems like a decent chance that mods might get rekt as well.

Good, I hope they get rid of the dumb launcher and SE account shennanigans.
That's why I've never bought the Steam version and just kept my ps1 copy.
Hopefully they fix the issue with the mouths too.

Probably a price increase. So buy the 2013 version now if you don't have it because I doubt the new one will launch at 60% off.

Thank god. Here's hoping updating 7th Heaven mod manager and respective mods are relatively simple.

I don't think it matters for something like this. People replay these games all the time, and Square would love to give them something else to buy for more than $10.

It's the up to date console version with all the cheatmenu and optional visual filters ect, basically grab the 2013 version now before all the mods are broken by this.

I played through the current version before Rebirth to refresh my memory and it was fine. Only issues were 1. the launcher was unnecessary and 2. the stupid :O face stuck on many characters, but it was easily modded out to look like the PS1 version (which had no mouths)

I'm going to say that this version is probably much more Steamdeck friendly than than the previous build. I too would like to know the difference. I think I have the 2013 version... I would have to check. Nice that Squeenix is giving it away and a free option download for those who own the 2013 release.

er, letters, not numbers. The UI stayed the same even if you used a controller

Oh right, I forgot about this because I got used to it after like 60 seconds of playing lol

It's a non-issue for someone like me who has been playing PC games since the 90s (we had to manually assign every button to our USB controllers back then... the horror!), but I can understand why it's an issue for the average PC gamer these days...

Well, Square is finally releasing games on GOG as of today, so I hope this ends up on there, as well.

But yeah, hopefully this is a re-release of the game that's actually better. PS1 music, re-translated script, not missing features/effects/whatever. Gimme the best of what the PS1 and original PC releases had to offer. I feel like expecting even a reasonable effort like that is asking a lot of Square, but you never know.

This will be just the PS4 version with the added cheats same as the FF8 remaster, along with the blurry backgrounds.

Now I'd love to be proven wrong and and it's a new FF7 with upscaled backgrounds, but I can't see it.

Well, I mean, it didn't stop me from playing the game, but it'd be nice to have a proper UI :]

Whats the difference thou?

The only kinda similar case I remember is with GTA, when they just erased old versions of the games and made the phone versions the standard. Worst decision ever
