Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

I saw a very cool thing in this gif that you dont typically see in games. You see the player pick up and throw an enemy and he just happens to hit a horse and the horse falls over. The dead body on the ground also still has physics applied to it.

Not a single blood spray 🤦‍♂️😭

for anyone not up to date on the latest DF video.

turn the reflections denoiser off in UE5 games! it has literally no function it seems.
with DLSS or even the default TAA, reflections look far superior both in sharpness and motion clarity with the denoiser just entirely disabled.

the TAA, or DLSS does the denoising better 🙃
that's kinda insane tbh.

so, whatever game you play, look up where the config file is, create a file called engine.ini in that folder, add
[SystemSettings]
r.lumen.reflections.temporal=0

then save the file, and preferably write protect it (some games delete engine.ini files on start or when closing)

I just tested it in Outer Worlds 2... and my god... it's 1000x better with denoising off. the difference is actually insane.
in screenshots it's already noticeable, but in motion the increase clarity is even more impressive.

this is with preset K (I think that's the one it ships with) at 1440p, hardware RT enabled:

like... jesus, this should literally become the engine default whenever DLSS is enabled.

anyone who wants do add this to outer worlds 2, beware that the game tries to delete engine.ini files when it closes. so create it, add your variables and then set the file to read only.

EDIT: even when using just UE5's TAA instead of DLSS it looks better btw. and mostly stable.
which makes me wonder what the fuck that denoiser even does... like... why is it there in the first place?

EDIT 2:
another set of screenshots... like... what are we doing here Epic? why is that denoiser enabled by default? every TAA method in the game seems to denoise better than that crap!

just look how all the surface detail is preserved with the denoiser off! all the little marbling on that wall is there. and with the denoiser on, it just looks like mush.

the difference is insane tbh.

What is with that glow effect from swinging the sword. Looks awful to me. Can you turn it off?

That's clearly not what they're going for, and it seems to work. The dynamic grass slash effect, among other things, manages to make that scene look aesthetically pleasing.

Word. Have you tried it on yourself.? I'm assuming you have the game. I got it because it's one of the games offered for Plus this month.

I don't have it in PS5 library. I completed PC version in 2020.

120Hz mode added with pro support I believe. Why the fuck remove it? You have 120Hz option in the menu on "automatic"?

Are you sure? I am watching in on my phone and I don't see that. I will look at it at home in my TV but I never had this impression while watching footage of the game
Watch it in 4k in a big screen, mobile\tablets make look everything pristine and give that cg look.

Everytime i watch a trailer on my phone it looks like the best thing since tera patrick special edition fleshlight 🥲

Crimson desert looks amazing but i think its similar case like back in ps4 early days we had with driveclub- on smaller/low quality gifs it did look almost photorealistic, on ur tv it still looked amazing(i know coz i bought it and played tens of hours in it, still have copy on my old trusty ps4) just it looks substantially worse from those close to photorealistic quality small gifs :messenger_smiling_hearts:
Pretty sure its coz human eye/brain is designed in a way we "imagine" those lacking details we cant see when we look at stuff from far/on small/lower quality gifs, then when we can see it all upclose on big tv screen those small photorealistic alike details we "imagined" before simply arent there and game looks still great ofc but way worse from combo of small gif+ our "imagination" :)

So here I was hoping GG would come around with their next technological marvel after HFW, finally going fully next current gen....

Didn`t go as I`d hoped.....

Horizon 2 came out 4 years ago. 4 years and a 500 dev studio can't put out a trailer for Horizon 3. There is something seriously wrong at Sony studios.

This looks like a cheap game made by like 30 developers. wtf is the rest of the studio working on? Are they even working? Or just jerking each other off like sucker punch and naughty dog?

I still don't understand why and I'm not happy about it, but Horizon is huge and Monster Hunter is huge. This'll be huge especially seeing how Monster Hunter fumbled its latest installment. it's the ultimate anti-GAF game though that's for sure.

Crimson desert looks phenomenal, I don't care about sharpness. Turn the sharpness down on your TV.

This game is doing everything at a high level. Should be getting more love in here imo

He did say there doing another single player game right the beginning

But this is a colossal waste of time as the game will bomb hard. Generic trash
Yeah they announced they were working on Horizon 3 several years ago. But we shouldve seen it by now. If you cant show a single trailer in 4 years then wtf are you doing?

They took 3 years to reveal horizon 2. If they are not there at the February state of play they should just shutdown the studio.

Confirmed by the devs, both the sword effects and the camera shake can be turned off.

We can agree on the art being a bit derivative (I think it has more shades of Spiderverse and Arcane than Fortnite like people here want to say 🤷‍♂️ ), but those in-game animations looked anything but cheap. That's clearly what they put their time and effort into. They come close to SF6's level of animation detail.

If this game sucks I'll fucking cry. Please be good.
It depends on your threshold. My bet is that this will be a solid 8 out of 10 with a few rough spots (that will be patched within the year since these devs are so responsive) but treated as a darling game within the gaming community due to it's insane level of discovery and ambition.

If you're one of the people here who want either 9/10, 10/10, or bust, then it's probably going to be a tough sell for you as an 8 with potential.

Naw I would be fine with an 8. I almost prefer the AA than AAA nowadays anyway, as long as the game mechanics are good, most important for open world. I don't mind a few points docked for corny writing or not mind blowing story.

I'm kinda hoping this is the Dragon Dogma 2 I was wishing for, but its own thing clearly as it seems to be wild with its fantasy setting.

That's exactly where I think the points will be docked, writing and story. It seems very obvious from the footage. The voice acting also just seemed passable at best but not great enough to be super memorable.

I truly believe, based on evidence of how much they changed after every single impression and every single demo they let people play, that they are fully intent on not letting this game drop below an 8 nor drop below 'positive' on steam.

This isn't Mindseye. These guys are not trying to hide into the shadows post-release or play the blame game. They're really wanting to give people a good game and continue working on it post-release if any tiny thing goes wrong. They clearly want to be a studio that is named among the greats and this game is a big building block.

What finally, mostly sold me aside from this new footage, was their recent interview run where they went on a ton of different outlets to just say what the game is and what it isn't. They didn't try to shy away from the stuff it didn't offer either, they were just straightforward with the yes's and no's, which is also a good sign.

Side note: I can't speak on DD2 since I have not played it yet. I waited because the game needed performance patches, then the leaked DLC roadmap never came to light because the director left Capcom and brought some people with him, so now I think that game is stuck in a rocky-framerate limbo.

Even if it had a performance patch, honestly DD2 would still be one of my most disappointing game of 2024

You know it's interesting, the director for DD1 and DD2 seemed like he wanted to make a completely different game than Capcom was known for, on the scale and promise of a 'persistent, changing world'.

I think I will enjoy DD2, but it will be for the same reason I enjoyed DD1 (and the reason I'm currently enjoying my time with the Fable series), which was the fact that I was warned ahead of time by outlets and gamers alike that the series was built on a dream that is not fully realized, yet ambitious in nature. I am very forgiving of this when it comes to gaming, because not many people try to swing for the fences when it comes to game design philosophy. It's highly dangerous and a potential budget killer.

I think if anyone actually manages to pull off something close to the above, it will probably be Rockstar if they ever decide to develop anything with swords and boards in it. One day I hope they do.

Do you have a link to where they were saying some of this stuff?

These were the ones I watched so far:

The shortest one is the final video.

There were some questions about side content, map size impacting gameplay, general loop of the game, rewards, exploration, mechanics, what the game is meant to be, etc. And for quite a few of it he just laid out what the game does and if they asked something it didn't do, he would simply say 'no, we want to be known for this instead' which I found refreshing because some reps and devs will try and soften that blow by giving a 'soft yes' instead of just saying 'our game isn't this'.

thanks. watched it, very refreshing interview - even the questions . i love that they grilled him hard over open world fatigue.

I will be giving this game a shot on day 1.

This looks really fucking good. the combat is varied and competent. looks like best in genre to be quite honest. wow.
they have every reason to be super proud of this game.

It looks to me like a very 'grindy' game where there's 27 button combinations you need to remember, but I hope I'm wrong.

Technically pretty impressive with so much being animated and having physics. Very curious what the impressions will be.

Oh stop with the hyperbole ffs.

Not gonna lie at first I wasn't really interested in this game but now I am quite intrigued and will for sure get it when it releases. Not sure when it is coming out though, if it is close to GTA6 then I will wait to get it. But yeah this game's looking good (I don't just mean graphically as I do think it is a mixed bag in that department).

It's out in march, you have all the time.

And its initials are H.H.
We know he is the one who pushed Horizon so much because it was his studio ip...
Eh, I'd place more of the blame at Jim Ryan, it takes time to see changes in a company at such a scale. We'll have a clearer picture if 1st party are still in this state as we go into the next generation. I've pretty much written this generation off from sony 1st party, never thought I'd be saying that.
