Nioh 3 |OT| Oh Fuck, You're Gonna Make Me Burst Counter

Just arrived the second region and I feel like I already completed a full game but now you are telling me that there is another map with almost the same size? This is crazy

I think there is another big one after this :D

Demo didn't click for me at first because of camera too close but then yesterday I noticed you could change the distance and that made it so much better for me. Then I played until the first real boss before the title screen, which took awhile but then something clicked and now I'm itching to buy the full game…

Its very customizable. I would point out though that the default settings for everything pretty much seem designed to streamline and simplify as much as possible so as not to freak out newcomers.

For example, a big issue for a lot of people is style swapping and burst countering being on the same button. Now if this bothers you you can separate these actions with a long press to change style and a quick tap to block. 2 Options which are in my opinion sub optimal. Instead, if you switch to a mapping which more closely resembles Nioh 1 & 2 (as opposed to the default which is based on Rise Of The Ronin and Final Fantasy Origin's setups) this changes to a 2 button combo R2+X to swap/burst, R2+O to burst but not swap which completely separates the actions. Its more complex I guess, but a lot of actions (Ninjutsu spells for instance) use a similar setup so its not bad at all.

Here's the thing though its not just convenience, its got real implications for difficulty because for instance say you're fighting mainly in Samurai mode in a tanky build, failing a burst not only gets you hit, but gets you hit harder because you've ended up switched to a much less defensive Ninja build!

There's lots of stuff like this in the full game; for instance by default you only have 2 shortcut palettes, which is seriously inadequate after awhile when you have healing items, summon scrolls, onmyo tools and various buff items available. Even the basic 2000 slot inventory can be augmented by a separate 4000 items at the blacksmith's storage box. Allowing you to easily dump everything you're not using outside of the field!

To be honest these latter two you'd be forgiven for simply not noticing if they weren't basically series staple options.

Just cleared my first monster zone area thing and got an orb that unlocked a new ability that lets me earn extra money. Still don't know what the money is for though! Feels like I'm terrible at this game, but I'm taking my time and enjoying it. I've leveled up a few times now (I'm level 9) and I've put my points in strength and intellect which seems to scale with my weapons (sword and tonfas), while doing more damage and increasing my ki recovery, so the combat is starting to feel smoother.

Will this finally be the time I finish a game like this?

The burst counters feel great, one of my favorite parts of the combat. But I do think they should have committed to making you switch forms to pull it off; adds to the incentive to play using both styles, and adds a bit of risk to the risk/reward balance. Having played Lies of P just before this, the animations for the burst attacks are so much better here; in Lies of P it's like they were actively trying to fake you out on each one.

I'm playing in coop and it's smooth as usual, Nioh 1 and 2 were pretty good in that regard too. One of the better coop experiences for sure. There are a couple of finicky things (the guests cannot interact with the chubby cats and other minor things) but it all works perfectly.

I'm still not sold on the Ninja yet, the Samurai is way more fun to play, you cannot beat stance switching.

I switched to Cestuses and Claws and they are pretty fun. The medium stance has a couple of counters that are quite fun to use. I find it's a bit more difficult to pull off a perfect Ki Pulse Flow, since the attacks are so fast and it's difficult to gauge the timing. The takedowns look awesome:

Why is it that enemies exploding into loot is so damn satisfying?

Leveled up to 12 and explored more of the map. Beat some sort of enemy rush / crucible thing, that was cool. I died once but came back with more elixirs. I used some skill points to unlock the different samurai stances. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this game.

Finished the first chapter and iam starting to get tired with the open world.

Is the open world in the second big area exactly the same?

I think the open word map in this game is one of the best map in any open word game. It is so well crafted that even if visually the game is just ok, it makes you really wish to visit some of those temples.

Came back from vacation yesterday and picked up the game on my way back from the airport (The Steelbook is beautiful, especially the logo side). Can't wait to get into it but I but literally have fully booked days / evenings for the next five days. So I will have to temper my patience.

Looking forward to revisiting this thread once I'm deep into the game! Put over 150 hours into Nioh 2 last year, so I should be in perfect shape for this one.

Installed the game on my PS5 before going to work - god that main theme on the main menu is getting me so hyped ... I hope they'll release a vinyl OST for this or Nioh 2 at some point.

What a piece of shit of an engine. It's embarrassing to say the least. The only saving grace is no shader compilation stutter.

Playing with Global Illumination below Ultra looks really bad at times, there is tons of shimmering, even on Very High.

Man I love this game but the story is nonsensical. I never like to skip cutscenes but in this game I am tempted sometimes

No shame in that. The NiOh games are the only games where I always skip cutscenes, even when they play for the first time, the story is pointless nonsense anyways and isn`t even presented well. It seriously doesn`t matter what general shoulderpads 123 or Monsterbuddah 456 says or wants as long as I get to slay stuff.

Yeah its a shame because the production values of these cutscenes and voice acting are very high. They put effort into making them look good but the stories, character and dialogues are really boring. It does not help either that the main character does not talk. They always do this with main characters and its really jarring

I am enjoying the game a lot anyway, I just hate the lost potential in this aspect of the game

Kinda ironic how Nioh has cutscenes and tons of voicelines, but Team Ninja can't write a good story for shit, whereas From's lore and story can be interesting, but they don't tell you a damn thing. That's the one part they should have taken from Souls games lol, but I guess it'd just make them far too similar.

it's satisfying until you have to clear your inventory for what to break down or sell...
It literally has some of the best built in item systems of these types of games. They make it extremely easy to get as deep in the weeds as you want or completely avoid dealing with it. You have auto loot, auto sell, auto ignore, auto equip, etc.. and you can set it up however you like.

It's not that bad, it just has hard set frame limits and you have to adjust your settings to keep the limit you choose stable. It's also the same engine as RotR, so whatever settings you used in that game you can basically copy over to this one and you're set.

I started skipping all the cutscenes midway through the second region. I honestly don't even know who half these people are anymore and I don't really care either

Those cutscenes when you get a new spirit animal are so boring imo

Either way, I'm having a BLAST with this game. I'm nearing the end and going straight into new game+

Should have specified its the way activities are structured, not the way the map is designed.
Yeah, I have played more now and the map is fun to explore, you can see they actually put some effort in handcrafting the levels.

But how the overall content, activities and rewards are structured is Ubisoft tier. At least it's not as bad as Rise of the Ronin, but it's the same philosophy.

100% my thoughts, its fine and the combat carrys the busy work, but a little bit more elden ring and less ubisoft would have been awesome.

I have not deep dived into Nioh 3 but Nioh 2's central story is Shakespeare compared to FromSoft's something cool happened before your arrival but it's gone to shit and here is an item description with no context or this NPC is kinda fucked up but you get something if you go along with their bullshit.

Almost done with 2nd region. Definitely gonna do NG+ later, but playing ninja style instead. Gonna feel fresh and different since im only using samurai on my first playthrough

Zero fucks given here. Game's fun as hell and the sheer speed with which Team Ninja turn out releases tells me their production pipeline -which the game engine is at the centre of- is exceptionally efficient.

Happy to give up a bit of shinyness for more entertaining content delivered regularly. You know, how games used to be.

I've got 100% map completion except for one Nurikabe. I can see it on the map but I guess it's part of a larger Crucible I've already completed. Super frustrating that I can't get it right now

I have most always skipped cutscenes in NiOh. Fantastic games, but I don't need the cutscenes. I'm too much of a Souls fan where the only cutscene that matters is the first, the boss intro, and the ending. I think I was the same with Wo Long and Wuchang. Black Myth I watched. I am in the second region now.

Finally i fought a boss that took me like 4 tries. Also i thought its the end boss and game is about to end, instead it threw me onto another big map lol

I tried to give it a chance but nothing makes sense anyway and that doesn't change for the rest of the game so I definitely started skipping them

Finished my first playthrough in 48 hours. I skipped most of the cutscenes after the second region, though.

Great fucking game. I basically played ninja the whole time with tonfas, melting everything with fire buildup and fire ninjutsu. The bosses were a bit meh, honestly. I was hoping for multi-phase fights, but instead you get sections where you fight several bosses back-to-back

Either way, I'm planning to scoop up the remaining achievements and mess around in NG+

Playing with a 60 FPS cap + 2x frame gen DLSS is way better than unstable 120 in this game, the difference is really staggering if you have the GPU headroom. From a juddering mess to decently smooth, it's not optimal since there is still the problem with the refresh rate of the monitor not matching the FPS, but it's waaay better. Artifacts are noticeable when spinning the camera around the character (look at the hair), but in normal gameplay it's barely noticeable to me. YMMV with the input lag. Usually I wouldn't recommend doing frame gen with a base of 60 FPS, but since the engine shits the bed so hard on unlocked framerate, it's worth a try.

I did some sick sync while playing in coop with a double takedown:

Did you grind levels at all? I'm attempting to solo bosses. Nioh 2 I had to grind it out half way in. Around 100ish, the grind wasn't needed. I'm at that point where I don't want to spend 5 minutes hitting for small numbers.

No grind, really. Just explored everything the maps had to offer. My rule with Souls games: I don't run past enemies, if they're in my path, I face them at least once. So, yeah, plenty of fights

Also offered most of the gear to the shrine, which helped with leveling

Edit: I did do a lot of revenant fights. Not sure if that counts as grinding

Is it just me or the pc port bad? I have a 9850 and a 5090 64gb ram and when I got to the open world after finishing up the first sections my cpu is at 97% and choppy I have to drop down to 60fps from 4k/120 to play it without stutter!

Sikining that I download the ps5 pro version and while it's a downgrade in quality and sharpness at least it's constantly smooth!! wtf

Put your cpu at 99% in power settings, it will fix the cpu being overheated

What!? Is that a fix for the game!?

Yes I posted it here a couple of days ago but the fix was kinda ignored

It fixes the cpu making noise like an airplane and stabilizes it

"I have made a very interesting discovery about the pc port

If you disable boost mode by setting max CPU usage to 99% in Windows power plan, the cpu temperature decreases, the computer makes much less noise as a result and the performance is identical"

It seems like boost mode in this game makes de cpu crazy for no reason"

Haven't gotten very far in Nioh 3 yet so can't say much there, but I ended up appreciating the very idiosyncratic approach to storytelling by the end of Nioh 2. I even found their rendition of Tokichiro's story somewhat moving.

Not being Japanese I can only guess, but it seems to me that they rely HEAVILY on real-world Japanese history AND knowledge of it. So whenever they introduce and establish a new character in a single scene, its usually a (I'm assuming) well known historical figure and doesn't need / get a longer introduction. NOT being in the know though, it feels incredibly stilted and confusing though.

I ended up reading most of the character entries and wiki'ing important-seeming characters and events, and it does really enhance the storytelling of Nioh 2 quite a lot. Instead of a confusing mish-mash of samurai-aesthetic vignettes, the story becomes a pretty rich re-imagining of Japanese history and folklore, framed through Spirit Stones as a mystical driving force for the bloody real-world history of Japan.

But I totally get how putting this much effort into story is not going to appeal to many people (at least outside of Japan). So it's pretty great how well the games stand on their own without it.

On a side note, its pretty insane how much lore is also available for every single weapon and armor piece. That stuff is too much for me, but it seems like there's museum levels of historical text available for anyone interested (e.g. this sword was forged by that well known blacksmith dude from this region of ancient Japan and so on and so on...)

Wow, nice skills. I'm already 80 hours in, I think I'm close to the end, and I'm still only at around 70% completion. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

What's the best armor for a samurai build?

Despite having a blast with the first two games I have little interest in this one for two reasons:

1. I'm over extreme loot management, like a lot of people.

2. I just played Sekiro and I feel like this would be a downgrade in some ways

In the last region, deleting bosses left and right. Sometimes i dont even use heals. So far only 1 boss was decently challenging. I assume the game is much harder if you B line story, but who does that anyway
