Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Hyperbole.

Most of the time when gamers say something was deep and moving I'm immediately skeptical because most gamers haven't read an actual book or watched an actual movie in their life and their idea of peak profundity is some YA high-school drama aimed at 13 year olds. "But maybe this time the overwhelming praise for this game's writing isn't due to gamers being emotionally stunted impressionable ignoramuses. Maybe this time is different" I thought.
This.

I'm sure it does, but I really just hated the overall vibe from the start and I did not finish it. I was exaggerating for comedy above but it's really just not for me. But that's ok.
give it a shot in a couple of years if you are in the mood to see what the fuss was all about. the ending is absolutely incredible. Just peak storytelling. Best ending in a game since TLOU1.

Hey to be fair, I wouldn't say TLOUII is much different, I just found it a little more palatable. E33 made me feel like a cat being pet the wrong way, but at least TLOUII gameplay was like getting my grundle tweezed (in a good way).
There is a reason why some games have the most awards like TLOU 2 and 33 and it isn't for no reason at all...I understand that everyone will not like all games, but there is literally unjust, blind, coordinated hatred for TLOU 2 unlike other games, the unjust hate was mentioned in two Forbes articles. The anti TLOU 2 bots and haters, go into a blind trance like rage against it while ignoring everything else great about this milestone in gaming, they ignore the sound, bang for buck length, controls, motion animation, ambition, visuals etc. and just go "TLOU 2 iz da worst gaem eva made!!! becuz we say soooo!!2@!"

So you wanted the predictable, run of the mill, standard, cliché, feel good, comfortable ending that millions of stories have told?
No.

There's nothing feel good or comfortable about the ending I just described. Everyone still loses something in the end, as they should, and Ellie and Abby just lose more.

The ending I described should completely break Ellie mentally.
Is this a reason to review bomb and hate a game that is a milestone in gaming and media in general?
Also No.

Both can be bad.

Edit: I'm not even arguing for Joel to be alive or anything like some posters above, that was one of the things I was okay with. I'm literally just saying a minor, minor change to the very end of the game would improve it.

Hey man I know what it's like being an oppressed gamer, Marathon is my most hyped game of the generation after all. Really though most of these narrative-heavy, cinematic style games appeal to me less than ever, whether they're RPGs or action-adventures. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of the original TLOU either. Felt like I was playing a mediocre HBO show. Not a bad game at all but hardly some high-water mark for the medium.

Somewhat back on topic here's some Marathon shots from the Bungie site. Obviously this game isn't pushing any boundaries, but for a competitive PvP title it's the right call and for an upgraded version of the ancient Destiny engine it looks damn good. It's going to look a lot cleaner on the consoles than ARC Raiders. The art style won't be for everyone but I've been creaming my pants over it since the very first reveal. Stunning stuff. There's something about the environments and materials that makes things look very "real" despite looking very "unreal".

the game wouldnt have won the most goty awards if those haters ignored everything about the game. There are many like me who gave it their goty despite having some serious issues with the story. People still clearly love Naughty Dog, but are sick of Neil because of his writing choices.

TLOU1 was one of the first games that made youtube streaming reactions for games a thing. Entire youtube channels were created because people saw how popular those reaction videos were. Soon every girl had a channel and they all chose TLOU1 as their first game. Those same channels then just straight up hated the direction Neil took the story. Call it coordinated if you want, I call it a complete rejection of Neil's creative vision.

this happens to every writer.

TLOU 2 sits right next to The Last Jedi for me in terms of being a 'Beautiful Mess'.

Gorgeous visuals with interesting story beats that are just executed in a bad way.

Luke Skywalker experiencing a moment of doubt and darkness as a mentor and teacher of light to where he failed a student who is also his best friend's son, has so many cool implications and places it can go.

Rian Johnson told the least-good version of that tale, with a bonus casino side story.

It's heavy as fuck! And can go up to 14GB VRAM allocation (12 usage), rare for UE5 games (memory leak?)

But it looks decent:

Look a bit shit on my end, but to maintain 4k dlss quality i have to play with a mix of very high-high-medium.

But i left all the important stuff maxed out, i doubt lights on high and shadow on medium can radically change the look of the game...

Like rift apart run circles around this one, this doesn't even feel like a ue5 game, it's super inconsistent and i saw a looooot of poor geometry.

How detailed the guns are is the highlight for now.
Most of the aliens are very low poly for a ue5 game, and the human models are straight trash like the dude you can pet or the sister.

It's the interesting story bits that fucking kills me...

If by interesting you mean toddler head "destroying the expectations with retarded shit" then sure, interesting bits indeed...
Because good writing and scenario design execution could work with some of the ideas in that movie.

Rian Johnson did not execute. He's better off not touching sci-fi and sticking to murder mysteries.

This is why I bring up writing so much every time I criticize something. It is the foundation of the building and there are certain teams out there who keep building pretty-looking buildings with weak foundations. It's almost an insult to the visual effects teams who have to work their asses off to help those above shots look so good.

To bring things back around to the thread itself, the same goes for video games.

I don't think there was much to salvage in term of ideas in that movie but like you said, this is not the right place.

I wonder what Neural Rendering tech demos Nvidia will show at GDC 2026, it's happening on March 9th, they've been teasing that quite heavily for 2 weeks now. I wonder what game support they'll announce during GDC.

Here's hoping we'll get something tasty & tantalizing from them.

I have to correct my previous statement about high on life 2, i played a bit the setting and now it look pretty good, it still has some meh spots but overall it's not bad.

I think it was bugged when i tried the first time.

Games that want to look like animated CGI movies never have enough geometric density to back it up, there are polygonal and rough edges everywhere destroying the look, even Ratchet - Rift Apart had this issue, but much much less, engines like UE5 are needed to fix this.

In theory with nanite this shouldn't be the case (near infinite meshes) but here we are...

I really admire Replaced. it is a well-crafted 2.5D game, the likes of which we rarely get.
the last time I was impressed with such a game was INSIDE and The Little Nightmares
I tried the demo today and it was a really pleasant experience, both visually and gameplay-wise. highly recommend it,
especially if you are a fan of Arkham/Mordor combat style with masterfully animated brutal takedowns

Which game do you guys think is the best all rounder so far this generation?

I.e. it can't just have pretty rock textures and character models it probably has to have.

Impressive Scale

Interactable Scale e.g can you climb, fly, jump or Swim around the environment or are you stuck walking everywhere.

Lots of NPCS/enemies

Lots of gameplay interactions e.g. getting to kill NPCS!

Impressive Physics

Lots of Impressive animations preferably dynamic.

Impressive effects. Ray tracing, Particles lighting etc.

Anything else you consider important? A game doesn't have to all of the above but most of them!

If any of you cunts say Hellblade 2 I'm gonna lose my shit!

Has to run on Consoles no brute forcing on PC allowed. Although feel free to mention most impressive PC game as well.

Go!

I would go with Horizon Forbidden West or Cyberpunk 2077

AC Shadows, checks all the boxes besides the NPC quality, i play purely on PC, but it barely looks any different on consoles from what ive seen. Avatar and SW Outlaws in 2nd and 3rd place, havent tried the 2024 flight sim yet tho.

Assassin's Creed Shadows if you can access the 40fps version. It gets points deducted for the 60fps mode being rubbish, but otherwise it's the best looking game and probably the biggest scale too.

Otherwise it's HFW, Ratchet, and Jedi Survivor.

I'll put this on the list!

I've discovered quite a few games thanks to neogaf posters.

Ratchet. Still unbeaten overall.

I think if you're on the base PS5 and you want to play at 60fps, Ratchet is still the best. HFW is very close but has those cross gen foundations sometimes showing through. Yotei's standard performance mode is apparently very decent so I'm guessing that's another strong contender.

Fidelity modes there are other contenders. I went with Shadows because that's the best looking game I've personally played, but iirc on base it uses FRS 2, which is a terrible upscaler, so maybe it really doesn't look that great on the vanilla PS5?
