Nioh 3 |OT| Oh Fuck, You're Gonna Make Me Burst Counter

The gimmick of switching between samurai and ninja seems underwhelming when you could outfit yourself as either last time as well as transform into an oni.

The more open world does interest me though.
It is more than that. It is having empowered ninjutsu (a NG++ gear set exclusive perk that refills ninjutsu) on game start. It is having Naruto running (past first crucible) when you are not in combat. It is being able to cancel out of more attacks (even midair) by switching forms with additional damage potential, having a more expedient super counter, having parries that work against Yokai, and having access to better upgrade systems.

Ninja and Samurai play very different. Nioh 3 does a very good job of giving reason to use both

Guardian Spirit has replaced becoming an Oni
The way I heard it described was that samurai was classic nioh experience and ninja mode is closer to a ninja gaiden type of gameplay experience.

I prefer samurais to ninjas but why would I ever choose the samurai form if the ninja form seems more overpowered?

Correct me if that's wrong.

Ninja is nothing like Ninja Gaiden. It is like having only mid stance with instant post-attack evade in place of Ki Pulse, 3 ninjutsu at the ready, and Tiger Running and Sacred Water active all the time in Nioh 2. Samurai has higher damage output and parries but Ninja has better space control.

Both are completely viable. The people saying Ninja is much easier is because they have trouble with Samurai and Ki pulsing. The mix of them both changes the gameplay loop in a very fun way

Ninja is way less tanky, and really favours attacks from the air, rear or distance for damage.

Which isn't to say you cant make Samurai form somewhat agile but its much more tank n spank. Face your enemy, and smash em down staying in the pocket.

The modes are very well differentiated, each with its own build and perks.

The game can look great sometimes

They're aren't, end of story. You don't even understand how the engine works, so how would you know either way? You literally said you've been running the game at 150, which we know for a fact doesn't work with this game correctly.

You've been running the game wrong this entire time and blaming the game. You will 100% stutter, or slow down, depending whether or not you are using the dynamic resolution setting if you cannot maintain either 60 or 120 fps exactly, not 150 or 55, but if you can keep 60 or 120 fps, and do what I mentioned in my last post, shader, traversal, and camera stutter are not issues.

The only people having stutters are either people like you running at the wrong framerate, people who can't maintain their settings at a SOLID increment of 60, or who are trying to use DLSS frame generation at 120 because it caps your fps below 120 and the game needs exactly 120 to keep perfect frame times. I know this because we went through this with Rise of the Ronin and my frame time bar is perfectly flat while playing.

Nioh 3 Perfect frame times 120 fps with FSR frame generation:
And Rise of the Ronin, same:

This is what happens to frame times with DLSS fg:

So, maybe, instead of acting like a clown you should listen to people who know what they are talking about and trying to help YOU fix YOUR issues?

There's literally thousands of ppl complaining about Nioh 3's performance issues on Steam. Man some of you fanboys are out of touch with reality. Thats why I'm clowning you. Your false rambling is stupid as hell, but then again you consider rise of roning and the others amazing games, so not much to talk about. Can;t wait for another "you have no idea how the engine works".

Yes, they are, because they aren't used to an engine that requires static frame rates. A lot of those people have been informed how the engine works and the things I've told you fixed their issues. The fact that you zero to come back at me with other than "thousands of other people who don't understand something agree with me" just shows you aren't built for this, buy a console.

And you aren't clowning on me, you're clowning yourself, and everyone in this thread who is playing the game smoothly knows it. That's why I showed you proof of perfect frame times, because I knew you would go full retard again. If you want to be an ignorant fool and play the game all stuttered up because you are too proud to accept you don't know something, be my guest, it's your shitty experience...not mine.

Here is Digital Foundry saying exactly everything that I've explained to you, I guess understanding how the game engine works makes them fanboys as well?

13:40 to 17:50 for anyone who is interested.

Multiple reviews reference Elden Ring which is why I put it that way:

Nioh 3 review: Team Ninja almost gets it Elden Ring moment https://share.google/6yR0daOHzlRWUyfX1

Nioh 3's open world is incredibly formulaic compared to Elden Ring's, so I'm slightly embarrassed by how much I'm loving it | PC Gamer https://share.google/urYw08GrXsaJPtlfd

kkZjyANZ9X51HqaT.jpg

Either way we will never know if that was the primary inspiration or not but as I've said, the game is overall the lesser for it.
Nioh 3 open world formula is better than Elden Rings.

If I find I new power or ability in Nioh 3 I can use it almost instantly. If I find something in Elden Ring it probably won't be viable to my build or I will have to jump through a bunch of obtuse hoops to get it to be. Even if it is I will probably have to cunt about with smithing stones to get it to the appropriate damage level. For a game that encourages exploration that is a huge fucking problem

When it comes to strictly GAMEPLAY Nioh is the gold standard now. It was always league's ahead when it came to combat now the core exploration is better.

FROMS games are carried SO SO SO hard by there art direction obviously Nioh 3 can't compete with Elden Rings Awe Inspiring environments.

FROM core combat is fucking average in 2026 just spam dodge roll and spam r1 light attack.

Nioh 3 has the double jump. Elden Ring does not. Therefore Nioh 3 is better.

Nioh 3 also doesn't have Elder Scrolls tier combat unlike Souls/Elden Ring. From Nioh 2 you have a whole lot going on. In Standard Souls design there is very little going on. Only Bloodborne and Sekiro have interesting mechanics to keep you engaged.

From only really wins in Art direction and level design. Occasionally music. Though I prefer DS3 and BB musical score over Elden Ring's.

Double jumping with the horse isn't as fluid or as maneuverable as the double jump in N3.

Though I guess that is the next step for Nioh. Mounted combat.

Ubisoft like map design is better than actual masterfully crafted map. I lived to see this day.
Elden Boring's map is awful, it's a randomly generated heightmap bullshit where you spend half the time going around on a fucking horse instead of fighting, finding copy pasted tombs and whatnot. Just terrible.

Nioh 3's map is way better, you can see it was handcrafted and it's actually interesting to traverse. The problem lies in the Ubisoft-like activities, those objectively sucks.

You got arguments for anything else I said?
No further comments regarding combat. I agree its mechanically better and more complex, already mentioned this in the topic, but ppl love simple things as well. I wont bother debating the above ppl about map design, after all fanboys will be fanboys and im not even a fan of ER. Even Dark Souls has a better level design than Nioh 3 but anyway. I have overstayed my welcome here in the OT. Will return with my final thoughts about the game once im done with it.

I don't agree. Nioh 3 open world is great but it pales in comparison to Elden Ring's world design. The map in Elden Ring is ten times better, more variety, more rich architecture, different biomes, amazing castles, and much , much less asset repetition. The sense of discovery in ER is top notch. I never had that feeling in Nioh 3 which is mostly interconnected corridors with some occasional open area. That being said Nioh 3 is a big improvement over past entries and the added verticality is awesome

Nioh has better combat though, but Elden Ring is much better at everything else

OK what about the loot you find in elden ring? Do you think it's a problem that if you find something in Elden Ring chances are it won't be useful?

What do you mean by better level design? Are you talking about level verticality, shortcuts etc.

Personally I Felt Elden Rings Open World
wasn't that fundamentally different from a Ubisoft isinspired open world. You go to a place comsume the content there then move on. The main difference is lack of icons on the map which encourages exploration by sight which is important as it feels more organic and this is where FROMs Art direction shines.

Ironically though it ended up with the Ubisoft problem in reverse. Once you've explored an area icons appear on the map so I just started going to areas without any markers.

No need to leave disagreements are what make neogaf fun!

I like the legacy dungeons in ER. But the whole world of Limgrave I simultaneously know all the locations exist but that also none of them are really all that memorable to me either. Not in the same way that DS1's level design made each location interconnect.

I don't think an Elden Ring map would work well for Nioh. Nioh is all about build crafting and the combat. I am never playing Nioh and thinking that the game needs quieter moments of exploration. Get me to the action as soon as possible. There is a reason why Nioh games are much more replayable

And Nioh 3 isn't even open world. It is still mostly linear paths that are all connected to one another. Nioh 3's map is also empty every time you visit a new area. The more you progress through an area, the more of the map fills up. That is a good evolution of the Ubisoft formula

I agree with this although I guess I would file this under Art Direction.

I'am talking strictly gameplay mechanics which I guess you can't entirely separate from art direction. I think how Nioh 3 makes all it's gameplay mechanics easily accessible is huge a upgrade over Elden Ring and this makes finding new stuff more exciting when exploring.

E.g. if I find a new soul core, Ninja skill I can use it immediately. If I find a new weapon skill for a weapon I'm not using it's an easy respec away.

In Elden Ring if I find something it has to be compatible with my build or I can't use it. If I want to respec I have to go through all that bullshit with the moon women and I can only do that so many times per playthrough. Even if I find a weapon compatible with my build it's smithing stone fun time god knows why FROM thinks there still a good idea.

Elden Rings Dungeons, enemies, Vistas are way more impressive than anything in Nioh 3 and a lot more interesting to explore for there own sake.

If a game combined Elden Rings Art direction with Niohs gameplay systems it would probably be the best game ever.

Agreed when it was level-based. I played Nioh 2, 3 times, I aint ever replaying Nioh 3. Each level in Nioh 2 felt unique, while in Nioh 3, it's absolutely drab both mechanically and visually. Though the ice map is somewhat better, but for some reason it also introduced a lot of stutters depiste being failry ok on the first map.

I prefer the loot design in souls games rather than Nioh's. Khazan also used Nioh's system and I disliked it there as well. If you're asking which is better, that is something that depends on each person. There are certainly ppl who are loot obsessed and have adhd and are in constant need of seeing colored shit dropping on the floor. I don't need that fix.

Nioh and Khazan have Diablo based loot systems.

Souls loot is a lot more static and doesn't have variable affixes or a crafting system attached to it.

Pretty simplistic in the grand scheme of things on Souls side.

I agree 100%. Give me some DS1 level design and just yes.

Well I don't much care for the diablo loot of Nioh.

I do care about trying different weapons, spells, yokai abilities etc. Nioh is way more accommodating than souls in that regard.

I do have to admit that the diablo-like loot for some reason works better in Borderlands for me, than Nioh, maybe because it's first-person or something, hard to explain. As for Souls games, I've played ER like 4 times now, and I always seem to stick with the same weapon the entire game. But again, these things depend on each person/game.

Fair enough did you try a different weapon on each playthrough? I personally like to try and experiment with as many tools as possible and appreciate that Nioh 3 allows that.

In ER or Nioh 3? In ER i've used a different type each playthrough, maces/greatsword, etc. in Nioh 3, on the first map I was using spear+kusarigama, and on the second map which I'm at the end, I used the claws and the cestures, or whatever they're called. I think I prefer the latter combo. Im assuming theres going to be a third big map, but not sure if Ill switch again.

Speak for yourself. Nioh 3 is easily the most replayable of the series for me. Traversal and Ninja combat are the main reasons why. Able to Respec your character whenever is another. DLC expansions will be huge for NG+ cycles

All I want for the DLCs is to get new enemies with newer movesets and integrating them in the main story and maps with more biomes. I don't care about the story but this would make it an excellent game in my book

I don't think either Nioh or Elden Ring particularly benefited from being open world. At least, their core design didn't.

Elden Ring is really cool to explore at first. The first few hours are enchanting, but then you realize it's going to be the same thing over and over again. Mines, graves, find the map, etc. One poster also pointed to the areas being extremely annoying with the verticality and I agree. How many times did you see something, only to realize you can't reach it and have to go around half the damn map to go there? Incredibly annoying. The highlights of the games are the legacy dungeons, which From always did anyway.

Nioh's open world is smoother to traverse and less frustrating, but it's overall nowhere near as interesting or compelling. The enemy variety is lacking, the bosses are too few, and there's no sense of imminent danger lurking around every corner. You also aren't rewarded with sprawling, tightly designed dungeons to explore once you've run around and found something.

I think both suffer from the same problem; really engrossing and fetching at first, but then you realize there isn't much besides the same couple of tasks you always repeat. Nioh's bread and butter is its combat, for Elden Ring, it's the bosses and level design…none which is enhanced by the open world.

They add the DLC enemies to the base game in NG+ cycles. I am guessing the upcoming expansions are pretty big because they won't be released until Fall. Nioh 2 first DLC arrived just a few months after launch

That's what every previous release has done. Typically new DLC enemies are layered in based on whatever new difficulty gets added, so after DLC 1 enemies from that expansion start getting added to the difficulty one below the ng+ cycle added. So I don't recall NG ever changing.

Obviously 3 is structured a bit differently, but for now I'm assuming that they'll just be adding 2 further ng+/gear itemization levels instead of 3. As right now its structured very similarly to Nioh 2 where Ng+ adds the first group of divines but only a small bump to actual item level. The equivalent to "way of the demon" ng++ is where things start to shift up.

I never played a Nioh DLC before, only the base game, so that's good to know. This makes starting new game plus a new experience with changes and new enemies. Its the perfect excuse to return after a year and experiencing the game with different lenses 💪👌

They put out a survey for the game you can take if you'd like to give feedback.

My only complaint was that the game is the easiest game they've ever made and I don't think it's close. Other than that I was all praise, I think the game is excellent.

You're so full of shit, it's hilarious. You literally admitted to playing the game at 150 fps less than 24 hours ago, in this very thread, and then said it was "too late" to start trying fixes. I showed you why you can't do that and have a smooth experience and now you're pretending you've tried this stuff.

Your tag is perfect, you are a retard, and I don't mean that as the usual insult, I think you're literally retarded or at least brain damaged enough that you can't remember what you posted yesterday so you can keep your lies straight. Anyway, enjoy playing the game running like shit when there are actual solutions you could have used if you had even two brain cells to rub together.

I pretty much guarantee the game will be very different by the time the DLC's are finished because with the single exception of Ronin (which had no DLC at all), every one of their games has run the same playbook.

I'd stress as well that the way things have gone previously is that they'll very likely add more content outside of the expansions, for instance Nioh 2 had a bunch of so-called "online" missions added in an update I think prior to DLC1, definitely DLC2. I'm pretty confident they also added a ton of bite-size extra challenges via the picture scroll system outside of the DLC too.

Its also important to say that if you chose not to buy the season pass, you got everything but the new missions/areas anyway. New systems, NG+ cycles, etc were free to all as they got patched in with the DLC's.

TN to their credit have never been stingy with their "season pass" approach. Honestly its a big reason why I'm such a fan of their output.

Dynamic wont help, my framerate is by default at 150 without locks, so it's not that i can't sustain 120.
Locked 120 fps is not enough?
I said I can easily surpass 150, not that Im running the game at 150. I was proving a point that my framerates dont drop below 120 when Im using 120 fps, because if you can't maintain the locked framerate the engine being absolute piece of shit, stutters or goes into slowmo, BUT I am running the game at a locked 120, and it still fucking stutters at times, so not only you can't fucking read, you're still an idiot. Dont bother replying unless you go back to school.

I'm in the final two missions. I found myself doing more map exploration because some bosses won't be back to back if you do the map quests. I am really enjoying it at like 50 hours. My one gripe is that I want a break lol It's more combat based than overcoming a big arching story. Skipping cutscenes hasn't helped either but idk it's not the story in Nioh that draws me in.

I love fighting bosses, so when I get to that point where it's like "here comes another health pool to deplete". I question if that's a good thing to feel? I will definitely wrap it up this weekend or next week. I wish it was a tad bit shorter.

The game is very long I agree. I was checking quickly a lets play, and I am halfway basically lol and I have played the game for almost 40 hours. The amount of content is insane. I think it doesnt hurt to have a small break and then come back again. I think Nioh is that type of game where having a break makes sense
