It's Official: New PSSR Confirmed For Resident Evil Requiem + FSR 4/DLSS 4.5 Comparisons

Resident Crybaby

  • Able to apply PSSR 2 system-wide, no per-game patches required. Killer move
  • PSSR 2 passes the "it's more than good enough" test, which DF claims PSSR1 did not
  • Compared to FSR 4 and DLSS 4, the differences aren't actually that important. Reaches the "Good enough, I don't care" threshold
  • PSSR 2 solves virtually all the PSSR 1 problems
  • Reaches the point of not being able to tell the difference from native rendering at a normal sitting distance on a 65" display

PSSR 2 bringing the goods. It's pretty much FSR 4. Not quite DLSS 4.5 but close. Sounds like a home run. And RE9 is probably the best PS5 Pro upgrade yet?

We look forward to more news in March, when multiple existing games upgrade to the improved PSSR. There will also be a system software update at that time; selecting "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" in Settings on PS5 Pro will allow you to experience the new PSSR with any PS5 Pro games that currently support PSSR! Once the system update releases next month, try it and see, some games may have noticeably crisper graphics.

Today, we're excited to announce that an upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) will be rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks. PSSR is an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them, and it's been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 titles on PS5 Pro to date.
We've been hard at work on a new version of PSSR, which takes a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm. We are happy to share that Resident Evil Requiem – shipping today – is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR, which is helping to keep both frame rate and image quality high.

I don't get why there is an option in the OS? Does it automatically replace the old one with the new one for games beyond Requiem?

edit: nevermind, yea you can use this new one on old games.

That's huge

Said it recently but unless companies go totally retard with Path Tracing, next gen's image quality will be so much better than this one where trash upscalers fucked up big way in some cases

Hopefully this will encourage more developers to implement PSSR in their games. I'm still waiting on a Everspace 2 update.

Can't wait to see how improved PS5 games with the older PSSR look with this update.

Alex talks about the rim of the guys glasses and says about the jaggies on PSSR, but it's just as bad on FSR.

How come the tree is barely moving on Nvidia side?

So it is available for RE9 immediately, but seems everything else will have to wait for the full rollout in the "coming weeks".

I'm currently replying control, so I'm thinking I'm going to hold off until the update.
I currently use pssr on it, but both have their drawbacks, but the pssr mode definitely has annoying shimmer on the light reflections and shadows.
Hopefully this update fixes it

Very good news. I had been waiting and hoping for a system‑wide toggle for PSSR 2.0 before jumping into some backlog titles that use PSSR.

This just makes the rumors of a PS6 for next year even more puzzling to me.

Also...imagine GTAVI releasing with this already. Rockstar have always been wizards in terms of optimization...i can't wait for that game now.

Digital Foundry will be busy with this next month. I was about to uninstall Death Stranding 2 but i may just wait now. The game is already amazing looking, imagine with PSSR updated.

You were right on the money in the DF thread when you replied to my post, my man. Hat tip to you.

Edit: Here's some gold for that post. Well deserved.
