It's Official: New PSSR Confirmed For Resident Evil Requiem + FSR 4/DLSS 4.5 Comparisons

Oh, you had it. OK. But probably you've played bad examples. LOL
But it is OK to argue.

Good and bad examples.

For example Last of Us 2 looked very good, while Jedi Survivor looked really bad. AW2 was mediocre (better than FSR2 in some aspects and worse in others).

PS Plus Premium really helped with that, most games were available (full games or trials).

Same. It makes me curious how people didn't notice the issues? My theory is they are coming from FSR1/2 on PS5 and perhaps don't have experience with DLSS4 and FSR4 to know how much it needed to improve.

Yeah, it's better than FSR2/3 in majority of games, same with TAAU. Many people were probably impressed by PSSR because of that. Even it was lacking compared to other ML solutions.

My hope, now that all of the upscalers are pretty damn good, is that we can finally send all of those uninformed "720p in 2026!! PS3 res lol!!" posts to the deepest, darkest recesses of gaming hell.

This is a a "720p" scale to 4K using DLSS4 ultra performance mode btw:

If this gen was all about having 60fps as the norm, next gen will be all about upscalling on consoles which will probably help a lot with having "all bells and whisles" turned on.

They said ps5 pro pssr will continue to evolve. I dont know if its possible, with ps5 pro but maybe the next update before the end of the year or next year will be path tracing. I remember Cerny mentioned about that in his past interview but he said they will focus more on IQ and frame rate stability first. Well path tracing is impressive but negligible and not a necessity for now, especially it is so demanding to a system. But if they have a special sauce on ps5 pro that they can do it then allot will still be thankful if in near future it will be implemented to ps5 pro. Even at only 30 fps with pathtracing will be impressive given that ps5 pro is not as powerful as those $2000 gpu.

Not sure if that would add any benefit? Pico seemed just as good
Pico looks pretty great, I would say both games DS2 and Horizon have the best image quality I have seen on Pro just after of Demons Souls. But those game have high internal resolution compared with other games like RE Requiem. We will see when the PC port is release how good is at lower resolutions

Also, if Sony are able to retroactively upgrade PSSR on the driver level, similarly to how Nvidia does it with DLSS, would an Optiscaler approach be possible to add in FSR4 (and beyond) later on PS6?

I see many of those same "issues" even with DLSS. None of the upscalers are perfect, but PSSR was the best available for PS and that's really all that matters.

Jedi Survivor looked bad, yes, but it was patched later, reduced flickering, fixed reflections etc. and more stable 60fps. PSSR was used good there.

You you kinda don't know how software works.
When they say system level and give you toggle you don't really expect it to be still dependent.
In essence it's still system level but only for patched software which ignores 90% of software.
This is too good to be true situation
The good news is I'll be able to play Silent Hill 2 again

Wait so Raytracing is a thing in the PS5 Pro, i thought it wasn't fast enough for RT? Or was it path tracing?

  • Able to apply PSSR 2 system-wide, no per-game patches required. Killer move
  • PSSR 2 passes the "it's more than good enough" test, which DF claims PSSR1 did not
  • Compared to FSR 4 and DLSS 4, the differences aren't actually that important. Reaches the "Good enough, I don't care" threshold
  • PSSR 2 solves virtually all the PSSR 1 problems
  • Reaches the point of not being able to tell the difference from native rendering at a normal sitting distance on a 65" display

PSSR 2 bringing the goods. It's pretty much FSR 4. Not quite DLSS 4.5 but close. Sounds like a home run. And RE9 is probably the best PS5 Pro upgrade yet?

Wait a second. It means all the older games will be automatucally updated to pssr2 without patch?

Guys - I'm at work and can't read an entire 8 pages right now. Hoping someone that isn't just making stuff up can tell me when will be able to start playing existing games in PSSR2?!?!?

We've been hard at work on a new version of PSSR, which takes a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm. We are happy to share that Resident Evil Requiem – shipping today – is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR, which is helping to keep both frame rate and image quality high.

But but someone told me you can't improve the general algorithm because algorithm not exist in PSSR, it's just FSR4 with the same neural network and you can't do it!!!!! 🙄Guess who, never change forum experts never change 😆

My prediction is next-gen will be all about path-tracing as standard at 30fps, with an RT fallback for the 60fps+ performance modes. It's going to be glorious and a much bigger leap than PS4 to PS5. Will probably save developers a ton of time as well as more can switch to a fully ray-traced development pipeline.

Lemme just remind u all those stupid takes DF had not that long ago, before ps5pr0 got announced/launched:

Total clownworld take questioning ps5pr0 existence and need, and instead praising weaksauce series s(that trades blows and sometimes loses vs a handheld aka switch2 :P ).

Can't wait to try Rebirth and PoE 2 with thiswait POE2 uses PSSR?

It has similar cost to FSR2/PSSR1, so it won't improve framerates compared to those techniques. Just image quality.

You see, even PSSR2/FSR4.1 won't save image quality if game resolution is 720p/864p. And many games on consoles have resolution like that (UE5 games, AW2, JS...)

Resident evil 9 is slightly above 1080p, that's a very good base resolution for 4k upscaling.

Developers are still able to make bad looking games with PSSR2.

I see. It is possible Sony PS and Cerny had consulted with Epic about UE5, about the pssr upgrade.

From the ps blog
You were right on the money in the DF thread when you replied to my post, my man. Hat tip to you.

Edit: Here's some gold for that post. Well deserved.

Homie called it I was thinkin
Guess I'm getting the Pro at the next discount. Mfers did it again.

They Pull Me Back In Al Pacino GIF by The Godfather
Yeah I was going to get one at launch but pssr didn't do it for me. Now I am sold on it.

Based on what the PS Blog says in text.

...and a little bit based on the semi-empty promise the Pro has been so far. Mark told us that the machine was designed to make the choice between Quality and Performance less of a big decision. Blur the line I believe he said and that is not how it worked out. There are numerous games with worse IQ and we have more options to toggle on and off\decide about than ever.

I know I'm in the minority but I game on console because it's easier. If I wanted to click\compare\toggle 1000 options, I'd get a PC.
Cross gen didn't help on that

It's a bit subjective at the moment. I have it all turned off as I found the aliasing on road markers distracting, pulsing shadows in cockpit and scaled back LOD. Now this might be objectively better on all aspects. Fingers crossed!
Yeah, I personally don't use it either due to that, so I am stoked to see the improvement with 2.0.

On flat screen I use RT on and PSSR off and usually in first person cam (since RT is not in cockpit without PSSR).

PSVR2 the reprojection option is a major improvement over the original.

The biggest news is that PSSR2 can be forced at the OS level to work on games with PSSR1.
It will be really interesting to see what happens in the Konami games.

Any Pro owner who doesn't admit they paid for the privilege of being a beta tester for PS6 features is fooling themselves. The best Pro game currently out doesn't even use PSSR.

Although it looks like RE9 is going to dethrone it.
Yeah for the first year and a half pro wasn't worth it for folks.

Dayam the PS5 / Pro side by sides are night and fucking day on RE9 not to mention it looks absolutely gorgeous, some of those shots where downright photorealism... FFS, been holding out hoping Capcom throw us VR users a breadcrumb so I can play it in VR but on the Pro it looks incredible now I'm thinking of buying a bloody Pro just to play this on flat screen..fuck you Capcom!!!!

The GTA6 comparisons between Xbox Series S and PS5 Pro are going to be a sight to behold.
