Half or a 1/3 of peak CCU for the launch week

Marathon is objectively a competently and well made game. It works, it delivers. Its problem is being sold as a niche-within-a-niche: an hardcore (niche) extraction shooter (niche). Arc is doing well because it somehow "casualized" the access to the genre.

This isn't bad per-se, we absolutely need games with a strong identity and strong design decisions (both in gameplay and artistic directions) in this dried up and risk averse AAA industry. Point is that this simply does not seem to align with current Sony's business view. It will be interesting to see how numbers align with expectations: I see this game quickly finding a baseline steady player base, but it will hardly grow to gigaboom numbers.
The question is if you make a game for the niche-within-a-niche audience, why would you spend $100-$200 million making it?

Loved it - beta sold me on it officially.
Love Destiny so i knew the gunplay gameplay would be special. After a couple of runs and more success it started to click.

Looking forward to them making adjustments and improving at launch and beyond.

Men_In_Boxes will be with you shortly to explain why this is a good thing. And that Marathon is the next best and big thing since Highguard.
And he will also remind you that no one buys or play single-player games anymore.

Let me make it easy for him. The reasons why player count is going down:
* People had such a great time in the first 1-2 hours of the tutorial that they immediately uninstalled and went to pre-order the game.
* People were scared of being bombed in Iran or they were concerned from people over there and as an act of pure empathy they stopped playing the game.
* Even if the game has same numbers during launch it is a good thing because the audience will be so hardcore they will be paying for the casual rest that didn't stay.

Does anyone know who composed the soundtrack for Marathon or what genre it would be classified as? The atmosphere is unreal.

Would it be classes as Dark progressive? I've been trying to find something that's similar on youtube but no go.

The track that ramps up in intensity when you ready up after pressing square is pure perfection.

before the server slam i was certain that it'll easily reach 150k or even 200k+
and now im not sure it'll even reach 100k

I feel like the server slam did more harm than good

Ryan Lott. Check out his band Son Lux. There was also a vid about the soundtrack. Don't worry about the Edna Mode glasses. They can't hurt you.

looks to be #2 on global top sellers, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people dropped it when they knew their progress wouldn't carry over.

I don't think it will be a huge success like ARC raiders but I think it will find its place and be successful. Probably below Sony's expectations but not gonna die off within a week like concord or highguard.

The real question is if a 50-100k CCU type of game will be seen as a massive failure by Sony, or will they put in more money to support it.

50-100K is a success coming after the Concord failure, thing is, this is Bungie, not some no-name Single Player developer who's making their first GAAS MP

I believe GAF is somewhat of an echo chamber because impressions outside of here appear to be positive. If player activity remains low even after the game's launch, then the haters can rejoice. While I still find it silly to use the server slam as an indicator of anything, I suppose we shall see. Not long now.

I def dropped it after the game clicked. Didnt feel the need to continue playing without carried progression when the game releases in days.
Had it been a release a few months down- i would have played way more thats for sure.

Same here and I've been playing Resident Evil: Requiem.

A launch between 30k-50k CCU would be a complete disaster. 100k would be on the edge of breaking even or flopping.
Steam CCU isn't total player numbers or copies sold btw.

Over 40 MILLION accounts registered for Warframe, yet 'only' 50k play it on the daily. 189,837 was its highest peak about 5 years ago.

If Marathon still sits at 30k daily players on Steam alone in a year from now we gucci bb! Hell, even Rainbow Six Siege managed to turn 20k in to 100k over the span of 10 years and that game is ASS.

If Gaf is an echo chamber, why theres people here positive about this game? Do you even read what you type?
Also anyone can find positive or negative impressions on youtube if they want. Thats how youtube works.

So Marathon was free all weekend, peaked at 143k players and then ended with about 60k players?

But ARC Raiders costs $40 and currently has about 250k players (has peaked at 482k players)

That doesn't seem great for Marathon... altho I did enjoy the game more than I expected after the tutorial stopped crashing

It was a free weekend with limited content before the main launch of the game, nothing carried over.

Wat.

Limited content?

At launch the full game only has 4 levels and 1 level is described as a very high skill endgame level (Cryo Archive) so most people won't be playing that

The free weekend had 2 levels. So that's 50-66% of the levels that most people will be playing in the full game. Not really limited content...
