why is everyone rooting for this to fail? I haven't been paying attention to the "discourse".
  • People are annoyed that PlayStation wants to make money and won't give up on GAAS
  • PlayStation haters who want to see PlayStation get Concord 2.0
  • People who hate extraction shooters and are annoyed that Bungie is making an extraction shooter
  • People who are upset that the art style isn't for them
  • Arc Raiders fanboys
Take your pick.

I know Sony bought Bungie, but I don't see how this is a "PlayStation" title.

Don't forget they knowingly stole art assets and were only sorry they got caught, not that they did it.

This whole game has nearly the entire industry rooting against it for so many different reasons.

My reason? I think the game is bad and I want them to go back to trying to better the Destiny franchise.

There are also console buyers, so its not just 20k
Its also a Paid game so its not relying purely on ingame purchases.
And didnt take the whole Bungie studio to develop it, Destiny 2 was basically funding development for it

And they have Destiny 2 income, and future projects most probably the rumoured Destiny 3
Destiny 2 made more money than GTA5 and Roblox in summer 2024, so with the staff cuts, they shouldnt be as desperate as some people here claim

I has nothing to do with it being a PlayStation game. A lot of people, especially enthusiasts on GAF, etc, are just tired of the endless GAAS games.

Their gonna make Destiny 3, but their not only tied to one game. This didnt take all of Bungie

Live service games are predatory and peak slop.
They aren't going away, whether you like it or not. And nothing about this game seems "slop", it has an inspired art direction and responsive controls, depth, etc. You realize that if this fails it means FEWER "AAA" single player games from Sony, not more right? You don't lose money on something big and then throw more money at something else that will sell 10 million max.

Steam charts cant find the game and DB the number hasn't changed for hours. Exact same. Might be bugged.

It has two sony splash screens when booting the game. Its a first party Sony game. Why would it not be considered a product of playstation?

I guess it all comes down to our triggerhappy gunslinger hermen :P

The game's success entirely depends on how strong it is on PS. If it's stronger than on PC, then it should last at least a little while, assuming there's no massive exodus. The reviews seem decent on Steam.
It's currently #18 on the PS best selling store, sandwiched between Apex Legends and Battlefield 6.

So it really peaked at below 87k on release?
Well....

If I was a Bungie employee I'd really really...really... hope the weekend is a game changer.

We tried to tell the industry that their business model of investing AAA money making a myriad of GAAS games and releasing them into a saturated market was doomed to fail. But the industry didn't listen.
So now we get to laugh at their train wrecks and say we told you so.

I'm not sure how Marathon will last when its DLC skin is this horrible.

To be fair, if your the type of player that wants to raid modern art museums to rummage through the garbage, then that is a pretty darn good skin.

Edit: I just saw this leaked image of the new zone Marathon is releasing in the summer and will jump on when they include it. It's looking hot! Me and the boys will make sure every empty bottle is collected when this droips!

Bungie is still part of PlayStation studios and it's still part of their overall GAAS push. Did you not see the entire intro to the game with the whole PlayStation Studios video? That's because it's a first party PlayStation title.

That too!

It's fine that you think it's bad but thinking it's bad and actively wanting it to fail is different (I'm not saying you do that). Plenty of others (me included) enjoy the game. Would I have preferred Bungie to do something else? Yes. Do I wish the Marathon title was attached to something more like a single player game with a separate multiplayer component akin to something like Halo? Yes but I'm still loving it.

I also don't hope for things to fail just because they aren't for me.

These GaaS are quickly disposed of if they don't bring in big sustained player numbers.
They're designed around keeping you playing and paying, instead of having a clear end goal.
Like most modern progression-multiplayer games you're at both an experience and in-game levelling/upgrade disadvantage if you're not in from the start.
Charging for PS+ when the same multiplayer's free on Steam makes PlayStation a worse 'place to play'.
At some later point, historically Bungie's locked off older content to condense the player population

The huge investment in Bungie would've been better spent on games that don't go poof if player numbers aren't there.

I want Bungie to crash and burn because they removed and locked Destiny 2 content that I paid real money for.

Not a decade later at server shutdown or something, but at the three year mark, when the game was thriving. It's absolutely nuts how they got away with it.

The art style may be inspired; it's just unfortunate that it wasn't the inspiration of any Bungie employee.

I would be rooting it if the game was a single player remake or sequel to the original.

Instead its just another hero PvP shooter using the Marathon IP with plot likely goes nowhere just so Bungie could make more season pass.

People compared this to HighFail but remember that HighFail was F2P, this is $40 a pop. HighGuard released on a weekday just like Marathon, but Marathon got lower numbers, which isn't good. The most damning thing is that HighGuard was made by by some no name studio. Marathon is made by one of the biggest FPS dev teams in Western gaming. The fact that it got lower numbers is not good.

Why ask a question if you're just going to cry about the answer?

Live service success doesn't mean more single player games. Look what happened to Rockstar after GTA Online.

Maybe the genre is not saturated? Maybe we have a chance at Fortnite money/success??

Let's try like all the other ones

They made RDR2 and GTA6?
They poured all their resources into GTA online content instead of making story add-ons, even cancelled planned SP content because of it and ofc took forever to develop the next game, because why prioritize that if you already have a golden goose you can flood with generic crap the kids gobble up....

Lmao less AAA games? What orifice did you pull that from?
